Chapter 1

Author: Longing Wish
Jimelle's POV

The door slammed shut, and my boyfriend, Tristan Zabel’s footsteps quickly faded down the hallway.

I clutched my cramping stomach and slowly crouched beside the shoe rack beside the door.

My forehead was beaded in cold sweat as I fumbled around for two painkillers and swallowed them.

It did not help. My stomach convulsed in pain.

Gritting my teeth, I put on my shoes and called a ride to the ER.

The nurse took my blood pressure and then sent me to the infusion room.

Once they got the IV in, I leaned back and closed my eyes.

Just then, I heard hurried footsteps. A man shouted, “Doctor, please hurry! She’s bleeding!”

That voice was all too familiar.

I slowly opened my eyes and looked through the gap in the glass divider between the infusion bays.

There was Tristan, with his arm around Cassandra White, holding her up as he burst into the emergency room.

Cassandra leaned against him. There was a tiny scrape on her calf that was barely bleeding.

“Tristan, it hurts so bad! Am I going to die?” Cassandra asked in a quivering voice as she teared up.

He reached out and wiped the tears from the corner of her eye.

“Don’t say that! It’s just a scratch. You’ll be fine. I’m not going anywhere.”

He took off his jacket and carefully draped it over her shoulders.

My chest tightened for a moment, but the feeling quickly faded.

Two hours earlier, he had seen me drenched in cold sweat and had asked why I looked so pale.

Cassandra had only scraped a little skin, but he acted as if it was a catastrophe.

After tending to her wound, Tristan helped her onto the hallway bench.

They were sitting diagonally from me on the other side of a frosted glass divider.

Cassandra fiddled with something in her hand. It was my car key.

It was a handmade leather keychain attached to the keys.

I had spent a month stitching it together and had engraved our initials, J&T, on it.

Tristan had once said this keychain was my special thing, and that nobody else could touch it.

But Cassandra was carelessly picking at the engraved letters.

Cassandra said with a pout, “Tristan, this keychain is so ugly! The leather’s all worn and peeling.”

Tristan glanced at it and said, “Yeah, it’s pretty worn out. If you don’t like it, I’ll take it off tomorrow. I’ll get a Stellalou one. You like that one, don’t you?”

“Really? Thanks, Tristan! You’re always so good to me.”

Cassandra leaned into him.

Tristan tensed up, then adjusted himself to block the breeze.

That made the thirteenth strike.

I pulled out my phone, opened the camera, and calmly recorded the scene.

After saving the video, I opened the chat with Albert Lance. He was the HR representative from the overseas headquarters.

[Mr. Lance, my visa is all set. My flight leaves at 4 p.m. I’ll be at headquarters the day after.]

Albert promptly replied, [Great! Looking forward to having you, Jimelle. Have you wrapped up all your resignation procedures there?]

[I’m finishing up the final handover tomorrow morning. There won’t be any loose ends.]

After I sent the texts, I locked my phone screen.

The IV fluid had just run out, and the nurse came over to remove the needle.

I pressed the cotton swab against my hand, stood up, and left the emergency hall through the other exit.

The night breeze was chilly.

I pulled my thin jacket tighter and did not look back at Tristan and Cassandra.

I crossed out the last strike on my countdown.

‘Tristan, you’re almost out of time,’ I thought.

Tristan lay in the ICU for three whole days.He had three broken ribs, a comminuted fracture in his left leg, and a severe concussion. When he finally opened his eyes, the ward was so quiet that he could only hear the beeping of the monitors. He did not see me. A nurse walked in coldly and told him that someone had covered his medical expenses. The nurse flipped through the records and said, “It was paid by Ms. Sage. She said she was only doing it as a charity and left.”His heart pounded. Ignoring the searing pain in his body, he struggled to sit up.“Where’s she? Did she leave any message?”“No. She went straight to the airport after paying. I heard she’s heading to another country on a business trip.”The nurse’s words felt like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing the last flicker of hope in Tristan’s heart. He endured a long, agonizing month in the hospital. On the day of his discharge, he hobbled out on crutches and made his way to the apartment building where I had

A colleague vividly described to me over the phone how Tristan had stormed back to the company that day.At that time, Cassandra was sitting at her desk in the sales department, showing off to several coworkers that she had just secured Project Genesis. When she saw him, she immediately put on a fragile, sweet smile and reached over to take his hand. “Tristan, what are you doing here?”Tristan swung his arm violently and knocked over the documents on her desk.He grabbed her bag, unzipped it, and dumped everything onto the table.A white bottle of vitamins rolled out.“Tristan, what are you doing?!” She panicked.“What am I doing?” he said in a cold voice. He shoved the pill bottle right in front of her face and said furiously, “I just came from your psychological clinic. Cassandra, you don’t have depression, do you? You’ve been taking vitamins and melatonin every day, haven’t you?!”Her face turned pale, and her body trembled uncontrollably. “Tristan, just let me explain. I

Third-Person POVTristan felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He stood frozen in place.‘Overseas headquarters? Regional director?’ he thought. He remembered how calm Jimelle had looked when she signed the documents in the office that day. She had said it was just a standard internal transfer. She had planned everything all along! She had only been waiting for the right moment to make a clean break. He, like a clown, had used it to humiliate her.He stumbled out of the office in a daze. He ran straight into Cassandra, who had just been made a permanent staff member. She held a cup of coffee in her hand. Her face beamed in triumph.“Tristan, you look awful! Didn’t you get any sleep last night?”She reached out to take his arm, but he instinctively dodged. His gaze fell on the coffee cup in her hand.A brand new pink Stellalou keychain dangled from the cup.The leather keychain engraved with “J&T” had already been tossed into the trash. He recalled the night in the eme

Tristan ran two red lights in the dead of night as he rushed into the ER of the hospital.Trembling, he searched through the entire afternoon and evening’s records. My name was not there. He stood in the lobby, rain and cold sweat dripping down his face.He wondered where I could have gone with my injury if not to the hospital.“The airport! She was carrying a suitcase!”He returned to his car, floored the gas pedal, and sped straight to the airport. He arrived at 1 a.m. The terminal was empty. Departure screens cycled through cities all over the world.Tristan looked up, and despair hit him. He had no clue where I had gone.In seven years together, all he had ever done was hand my projects over to Cassandra. He had never once asked where I was going. He ran to the counter and said hastily, “Excuse me, can you please look up a passenger named Jimelle Sage and check where she’s flying to?”“I’m sorry, sir. That’s confidential information. I can’t give out such information.”

At 2 p.m., it started raining heavily.I stood by the roadside with my suitcase and waited for a cab to the airport.I had two hours left until my flight.A cab with its light on pulled over to the curb and splashed water everywhere.Tristan got out of it. Without an umbrella in hand, he rushed into the rain and snatched my suitcase before dragging me to the cab.“Cass called and said she’s going to cut herself! If you hadn’t given her an attitude all morning, she wouldn’t have gotten triggered. You have to come to the hospital with me and apologize to her!”I stumbled as he pulled me, and my stomach began to cramp again. “Let go of me! I already handed over the project. What more do you want from me?”“But you didn’t give it to her willingly!” he shouted.“If anything happens to Cass because of you, I’ll never forgive you!”He shoved me in the back seat of the car. I clung to the door frame and said, “I’m going to the airport! I don’t have time for your little games!”“Wha

“Jimelle, where are we on Project Genesis?”The director, Robert, coughed lightly. I had a good guess what was happening. “The final contract will be signed this afternoon—”Tristan cut me off and towered over me. “Add Cassandra’s name to the contract as co-lead. She’ll handle the follow-up on the remaining payments from here on out.”Cassandra tugged at his sleeve and sobbed.“Tristan, forget it. My depression keeps acting up. I don’t have the energy. I don’t deserve to take credit for Jimelle’s work anyway…”“Nonsense!”Tristan shot me a glare and said, “Jimelle, this project is Cass’ only shot at getting confirmed! You’re about to be the salesperson of the year anyway. Would it kill you to let her share a little of the credit?!”Robert looked uneasy.“Tristan, Project Genesis has great margins, but the client is a nightmare. As per our risk control policy, any co-lead is also on the hook for shared KPI liability. Cass just got here.”Tristan said, “I’ve reviewed the fir
