LOGINLauren's P.O.V.
I groaned in pain, trying to move my body a little, but screamed in pain. My whole body felt like it was crushed under a fully loaded truck. "Lauren.... Lauren." I heard Joyce calling my name worriedly, but I was in so much pain that I only whimpered again instead of opening my eyes.
My eyelids felt too heavy to even move a muscle in there.
"Lauren. Listen to the doctor, love. He is going to examine you," she instructed me worriedly, but I stopped whimpering when I registered only one word.
Doctor????
Where am I?
"Ms. Shaw. I am Dr. Vincent Froster. I am your attending doctor. You were brought to the hospital ER two days ago after being in a serious accident. You were badly injured with a fractured right arm, a deep wound on your forehead, and three broken ribs. Luckily, there was no head trauma or any injured internal organs."
I slowly tried to open my eyes while listening to a very gentle male voice, I guess the doctor that Joyce mentioned before.
"Th... then why am I in so much pain?" I groaned in pain again while trying to open my eyes. My voice was completely dry and hoarse. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was me who asked that question. I was so thirsty that I wanted something warm or cool to soothe my throat.
"You were unconscious for two days, Ms. Shaw. Of course, you will be in pain for a few minutes, and then it will ease." He comforted me. I felt someone taking my wrist. I would have yanked my hand away from his grip if I hadn't known that it was the doctor who touched me.
I have a problem with strangers' touches, and often it makes me hurt the stranger who made the mistake of touching me.
"You scared me to death, girl. You don't know in what state I was when someone called me from your phone and told me that you were in an accident and in this hospital." Joyce started blabbering worriedly while the doctor continued examining me.
"Who called you?" I asked her but groaned in pain again. My throat was completely parched.
"I .... I don't know. He was gone when I reached here, but he signed the surgery form as your husband. The nurses said that he had a mask on his face, but he was tall with a killing body."
Here goes my condition in the drain. Joyce and his craziness towards handsome men.
"And he is also the one who paid for your surgery and your hospitalization before leaving the hospital. He will be super rich who just threw away a few hundred thousand to save a life and didn't even leave any contact information." I was surprised to hear this part, though.
It was weird, but I guess there are still good people in this world. I will find him later and will return the money with a whole-hearted thanks and a gift to show my gratitude.
"I am giving you water to drink, Ms. Shaw, but you only need to take two sips. If everything stays okay, then you can drink some more water in a few minutes," Dr. Fraser instructed me in a gentle tone.
I nodded slowly as I couldn't move my head quickly. My head was still hurting badly.
Joyce brought a small paper cup to me, which had some warm water. I looked at that cup greedily. She chuckled, but I didn't pay attention to her as my eyes were on the cup.
As per the doctor's instructions, she only let me have two sips, but the warm water did a miracle on my throat. I felt relieved of dryness and pain in my throat.
Dr. Froster nodded in satisfaction after some time when I didn't show any discomfort after drinking water.
"This is a good sign, Ms. Shaw. After five minutes, you can have a few more sips, but not the whole cup, okay? The nurse will give you a painkiller for your pain. Call me if you feel even a slight discomfort, okay?" He instructed me and gave me a questioning look in the end.
"Roger that, Mr. Froster." I wanted to reply with these words with a goofy grin, but I winced in pain when my throat hurt as soon as I uttered the first word.
He smiled while shaking his head and then signaled the nurse standing beside him.
He gave me a curt nod and walked out of the room. "Your actual husband called you yesterday, asking about your whereabouts. When I told him that you were in an accident and in critical condition, he didn't believe me, you know? The audacity of that man to suspect my words." Joyce grumbled while telling me what happened when I was unconscious.
The nurse slipped her hand under my neck and helped me move my head up a little so that I could drink some water.
"He came here and.... almost hit Dr. Froster when Dr. Froster told him that you are critical and it's not sure if you will be able to survive the day or not. He actually looked so worried, as if he were a devoted husband, not a s*umbag." She continued telling me, making faces in disgust and hatred.
I felt bitter in my heart. I thought that I would never feel heartbroken, but....
Who am I kidding?
I wasn't in love with him when I accepted this assignment, but yes, I was in love for more than a year.
So, yeah. I still had lingering feelings for him in my heart.
"He stayed only for half an hour before his b*tch called him. I was standing near him, so I heard her voice. God, Lauren! How could he digest such a sugary voice?" I just watched her while she continued telling me everything. She sometimes became a bit dramatic, and right now was the same time.
She threw her hands in the air while making a few weird gestures and then shuddered her body so badly in the end as if she were scared of something.
"He shot up on his feet as if he was sitting on pins and needles, not on a comfortable sofa, and ran out of the room. He didn't even look at you once before running out of the room." She continued ranting angrily.
She suddenly stopped and looked at me with a pitiful gaze.
"It's okay, girl. You have me. You don't need a man to comfort you." She comforted me while taking my hand in hers but didn't move my hand from the bed.
"Yeah. I know." I replied briefly as I was still in pain.
"I planned everything for you after you are discharged," she announced proudly, and I knitted my brows in confusion.
"You are going for a trip to Europe after your discharge, which means you will go straight to the airport after getting out of the hospital. The whole trip is for one month, and you will come back a day before the last day of the cooling-off period," she continued telling me her plan.
My heart skipped a beat when I realized that I signed the divorce papers before the accident.
"If you want to know if he filed for the divorce or not, the answer is no. When I asked the reason, he refused to say a word and said that you didn't agree to his only condition for the divorce. He will not file for the divorce until you agree to that condition."
The anger immediately simmered in my heart.
"I know what you are feeling, love, but he didn't know me. He didn't know that he messed with the wrong girl. Leave everything to me and Caellum. Rest well, concentrate on your recovery, and then go have some fun before coming back to the real world," she still comforted me in a commanding and confident voice.
I felt a tightness in my chest when she took Caellum's name.
Caellum is my elder brother, more like a parent figure to me. He stopped me from being so reckless three years ago, but as stubborn as I was, I refused to let him decide something for me and did what I felt was best for me.
In the end, I became the joker in this circus.
Both I and Joyce looked at the door when we heard it opening again.
"What the f**k are you doing here? Get out." Joyce burst into anger, shooting up to her feet as soon as he entered the room.
Lauren’s P.O.V.Thanks to my brother, the whole procedure finished in just half an hour. To my relief, it was only me and Gabriel.Joyce and Celia were stopped outside the VIP room, where an officer was especially assigned to us.“You guys will get your final divorce certificate if you still want the divorce.” The officer told us politely while giving us the receipt.“Thanks.” I thanked him politely and put the receipt in my pouch.“Let me take you out.” Gabriel proposed while standing up.“No need. I know how to drive a wheelchair.” I refused coldly and drove myself out of the room.“We can still be friends, Lauren. Even if you don’t need money or status, having friends is not bad.” Gabriel spoke to me, desperation evident in his voice, but I was now numb to him.For me, he was nothing but a stranger.“An Ex is as good as dead meat. Furthermore, I am not someone who keeps clinging to the past. Let’s part ways on a good note. I will send someone to collect the divorce certificate. So,
Lauren’s P.O.V. (Continued)“That’s not true, or you don’t want to admit that you are nothing but selfish trash.” Joyce screamed at her in the same way.“Do you really think that everyone is a fool like Mr. Westfield? You think that you hid very well what you did aboard in the past three years, but for your information, Ms. Ashford, you are butt naked in front of me and Lauren.”The sheer horror on Celia’s face was so satisfying that I wanted to stand up and jump while clapping in excitement.Too bad that I was also confined to a wheelchair now.“What are you talking about?” Gabriel asked Joyce angrily.“Ask your beloved pure moonlight or investigate by yourself, Mr. Westfield. Why do I waste my breath on telling you anything about her?” Joyce replied sarcastically, taunt, anger, and hatred dripping from her voice.“Let’s just finish this, Gabriel. I need to go back to the hospital as soon as possible.” I urged him tiredly. He let Celia enter our lives and destroyed our marriage witho
Lauren’s P.O.V. (continued)My whole demeanor went cold when I saw them standing together in the waiting area.“I was stupid to feel bad for him that day, Lauren. He is nothing but an a**hole…. A jerk, a sc*mbag.”“Joyce.” I stopped her abruptly; the voice came out of my mouth harsher than I had anticipated, but I truly wanted to cut open Gabriel’s skull and see what’s inside there. He brought his moonlight to rub the salt on my wounds.“I am sorry, Lauren. A man like him is destined to live his life in regret.” The pain in my heart was so intense that I heard nothing. What did I do wrong to him that he decided to humiliate me and hurt me like this?I was still looking in their direction with tears in my eyes blurring my vision.A beautiful blonde with pitiful-looking dark blue eyes was sitting in the wheelchair beside him.Her legs were covered with a beautiful blanket, and with her pale complexion, she was a picture-perfect forlorn or mousy, both words fitting to her.Gabriel was in
Gabriel’s P.O.V. (Continued)“In the past, it was Ms. Shaw who always reviewed the projects before submitting them for bid. He spoke again, but it was as if he had poured a whole bucket of cold water on me. She…… she was supposed to give us the reviewed project two days ago, b…. but she got in that accident.” He replied to me hesitantly, but all the lines on my forehead straightened immediately. It took me a few minutes to process what he just told me.“Yo… you mean to say th… that in the past three years, for all the projects we got, it was Lauren who did the final review?” I still asked him, still unable to believe that Lauren not only took care of me and this home but also my business.“Yes, Mr. Westfield. She took over the position of executive assistant with me the next day you married her. She did everything to… to keep the business going, Mr. Westfield, but never came forward to get the credit.”I felt as if a mountain crumbled on me.For three years….For three fucking years,
Gabriel’s P.O.V.I thought that admitting my mistake of misunderstanding Lauren would ease my guilt of asking for a divorce, but it only made me feel worse.I painted her as a gold digger in my heart before asking for a divorce, but what I learned in the past two days made me feel worse than I felt when I woke up after that accident.Lauren Shaw....The woman who took me as a challenge and gave the best of everything. The woman who made my cold mansion a home, and what I did....“How is she?” I looked at Celia, the woman I loved wholeheartedly, and couldn’t let her go even when she left me after that accident. She was sitting in her wheelchair, looking at me worriedly. I smiled tightly while walking towards her.“She is better now. The good thing is that she came out of critical condition.” I replied to her calmly and sat down on the armrest of the couch. Her wheelchair was now beside the single couch.“That’s a good news.” She smiled in relief while I took her hand in mine. For some
Lauren’s P.O.V. (Continued)“Joyce.” I called her in a soft and hoarse voice, as I was still feeling some pain in my throat, to stop her from lashing out.I looked at Gabriel as if I were looking at a stranger, not someone with whom I spent three years of my life. When he was in the wheelchair, I was glued by his side all the time. I washed him, clothed him, helped him in physiotherapies, and cooked late night snacks when he complained about being hungry, and yet he was still a stranger to me.“I am not here to argue, Lauren. I…. I am just worried for you. How are you feeling now?” he asked me worriedly, ignoring Joyce and her outburst.“Still alive.” I replied sarcastically, and his anger surfaced. He always had these anger issues. I thought that he was like that because of the accident, but later I found out that it was just me who endured his anger all the time.He can be soft-hearted and can speak gently and in a loving tone, but not to me.“I want a civilized conversation with yo
