I do not understand why I am here in the hospital.

If Brittany has been shot, then this is a family matter. A private one. Something that should not involve me. And yet, when Jude said we were leaving for the hospital, he did not give me a choice. He simply looked at me and told me to follow.

So I did.

We are led straight through the corridors, past waiting patients, until we reach a private wing that feels nothing like the rest of the hospital.

We stop outside a door, and one of the guards pu

Jude stared at the documents spread across his desk while several security reports remained open on the monitors surrounding him.The masked auction was tomorrow night.Normally, preparations for the annual event would have been delegated to other people. He had enough men capable of handling logistics, security, guest verification, and every other detail involved. This year was different. This year D’Angelo's were walking straight into the trap he had spent years building. His fingers tapped slowly against the desk as he reviewed the final security layout. The auction would be held at the mansion.Every guest would be screened. Every entrance monitored. Every room secured.By tomorrow night, dozens of powerful people would be under one roof. And if everything went according to plan, Brittany’s family would leave completely ruined. It was unfortunate that he wasn’t inviting her to see for herself. A knock sounded against the office door.“Come in.”Roman entered carrying a tablet ben

CECILIA’S POVMae worked hard, coding the online funnel that we would use to frame the person Dr. Venom was targeting. While I planned the strategy of how I’d get unto the auction and put, based on all Mae remembered about the annual masked auction.“I don’t know who the current head of the inner circle is, but it’s going to be held there.” She said, eyes still focused on her computer.“Is it possible we can just find out on Google?” I asked. She laughed, and shook her head. “Then the government would also know to.”I sighed and turned my eyes to the mask I was sewing for auction. I had asked some servants for materials and equipment, and gave the excuse that I wanted to patch up some of the clothes for the kids.I realised, since this was a thing for mafia families, there was a huge chance that Jude would attend it. I didn’t need him to hear I was stitching up a mask, and have him putting two and two together. “What if it’s happening miles away from here?” I asked, even though I wa

Miles away from Jude’s penthouse, in the heart if the city, was the D'Angelo's family house. In the lounge, Brittany sat cross-legged, tapping away instructions to one of her men. It was an assassin she sent to kill the man who she has sent after Cecilia. It had taken great lengths to find Jude’s location. But she had successfully found his hidden penthouse. She read the message the assassin had sent:[The target has been eliminated]A smile of satisfaction graced her lips, as she typed out.[Excellent]Across from her Benjamin pocketed his phone with a sigh, then glared at his sister. “What’s making your wicked soul happy? Did someone die?” He sneered. She chuckled, her eyes looking over him with coldness. “In fact, someone actually did.”Benjamin made a face like he’d swallowed something sour. “You say it like you’re proud of it.”“I am proud of it.” She said simply. “Pride is the natural reaction to doing your job well.” She wasn’t going to let him know she was after Jude and

The countdown of seven days to the auction, loomed over my head. I anxiously waited as the days passed. I noticed Jude came around often to be with the twins. Despite how much I tried to prevent it, he kept on worming his way into moments with them. When they were eating breakfast, he sat at the table. When they were outside playing, he would join them when they asked. Before he went out, he asked to see them. It wasn’t just frustrating me, but also torturing my mind. Each time I saw Alex clinging to his leg, or Allison laughing at him, it made my stomach churn. I’d began to question my decision. Was it right to keep the kids from having a father? Right now, they were young and hadn’t asked any questions. But what about when they got older? What if they grew to resent me from hiding them from their father. Beside me, Mae appeared on the balcony. She must’ve seen the tension on my face, because she squeezed my shoulder supportively.“It’s overwhelming to see them like this right?”

"I need to leave." Jude said as he stood in front of me.I quickly tucked my phone into my pocket and looked up. "What?""There are things I need to handle."I wanted to ask why he was telling me, instead of just walking out. But the way his eyes lingered on me and moved briefly toward the twins, made me stay silent. "You'll be safe." He added, as if he was entirely sure. I nodded, still unable to muster a verbal reply. A few seconds later he left. The moment he disappeared, Mae immediately leaned over."What was that sound?"She remembered what I’d assigned our laundering messages to sound like. I unlocked my phone and looked at the message, my eyes immediately widened."No way." I gasped. "What?" Mae asked, waiting with anticipation. I stared at the screen, taking in the entire message. "It's Dr. Venom."“Oh.” She nodded. “Our biggest client.”Of course she remembered exactly who he was. We had made a billionaire from him, and had used the money he gave us to restart our lives

CECILIA’S POVStanley wasn’t my major concern. Allison and Alex were. Stanley had been inside one of the most heavily guarded rooms, surrounded by guards and surveillance cameras. Yet someone had still managed to reach him.And had killed him, and gotten away.If an assassin could get to Stanley, then they could get to anyone. They could get to me.They could get to Mae.They could get to my children. The thought made my pulse race harder than it already was. My stitches pulled painfully as tension seized my body, but I barely noticed.Beside me, Mae looked equally unsettled.Neither of us spoke for several moments. We didn't need to. The same fear was written across both our faces. The maid had already left, probably to report back to Roman who would currently be dealing with the chaos downstairs. I heard the sound of footsteps approaching, and immediately pulled shut the twin’s room. Mae stood by my side, bracing herself. A second later Jude appeared at the corner. The moment his

The kitchen is very quiet.Mae doesn’t move. She slowly sets the glass of water in her hand down. Her eyes flutter shut briefly. When she opens them, I’m surprised that she doesn’t seem shocked. She looks more like she expected it. She exhales and drops into the chair opposite me. “Oh dear.”I le

The words hit me like a physical force. For a second I just stare at her. I hear the sentence. I understand the sentence. But my brain still refuses to fully process it.I was actually pregnant.“You’re certain?” I ask quietly. The doctor nods. “Very certain.”I look down at my lap slowly. “Oh.”Th

The next morning comes quickly.I barely sleep before Mae is already up, pulling clothes from the chair beside the bed while Leo checks something outside through the window.“We need to move.” Mae says.I sit up slowly, my body still exhausted. My muscles ache from sleeping stiffly and my mind stil

Hours later, I finally come back downstairs. The guards are still there exactly where I left themm Neither of them questions why using the bathroom somehow took over two hours. One of them greets when he sees me. “Doctor.”I give an awkward laugh. “I accidentally fell asleep.”The excuse is barely
