Chapter 1

"Benedict, I promise you that Clay and I are no more than friends. Even if we're intimate, there are absolutely no feelings involved."

Evanna Johnson pushed me away and ordered someone to fetch Clay Armstrong.

I saw the trace of lust in her eyes, and my chest tightened. "I can be your cure, too."

"We never had a formal wedding ceremony. Do you really think I'm the kind of woman who would use a man's body as medicine?" Her eyes darkened with anger.

Right on cue, Clay walked in from outside and dropped to his knees in front of me. Even the way he looked at me was full of resentment.

"Lord Campbell, I know you men from Carvon are all possessive when it comes to women, but you can't put your jealousy above General Johnson's life! If you refuse to let me cure General Johnson today, I'll kneel right here and die with her!" he spat.

I reached out to help him up, but Evanna was faster. "Get up! You're my army physician. You don't kneel to anyone else!"

She had been hit with a love hex. With a pull and stumble, she fell straight into Clay's arms.

"General Johnson!" he cried out, tightening his hold on her.

She clutched his arm. "Help me into the inner room so we can purge the hex."

With that, the two of them started toward the inner chamber.

"Darling!" I called out to her.

She turned to look at me, still leaning against Clay's chest.

The lump in my throat grew larger. "You and I are the ones who are husband and wife. It… It's not appropriate for him to cure you."

"Benedict, it's not that I don't trust you. It's just that this hex is no joke, and Clay and I are more compatible," she said. Her brows were tightly furrowed, her tone already laced with impatience.

Panic flared in me. Since when had they discovered this sort of "compatibility" between them?

Before the beaded curtain could fall, I grabbed her sleeve. "Do you still remember the vow you made to me beneath the palace walls?"

She said, "I won't go back on my word. I'll still be your wife. But Benedict, you live a life of comfort in Carvon. You don't understand how things work in the army."

I didn't understand?

The Campbell family had produced ten generals, and every one of them had died on the battlefield. From the day I was born, I'd grown up riding with my father and brothers along the frontiers. I'd spent 18 years doing that—what exactly was it that I didn't understand?

Clay cut in anxiously. "General Johnson, curing you is what matters now."

"Stop kicking up a fuss and behave. You'll still be the master of the Johnson household," Evanna said, looping her arms around his neck.

"But—" I couldn't even get another word out before she cut me off.

"Do you want me dead?" Her voice turned ice-cold and razor-sharp.

When the beaded curtain finally fell, I sat down, not knowing whether to be amused or mad. Evanna was my wife, yet I'd never even seen her body. Because she'd requested an imperial edict to go to war, I'd completed the wedding ceremony alone.

After that came three straight years of war. Now that she'd finally returned, she'd chosen to fall into bed with another man…

My heart ached, and bitterness flooded me. From behind the curtain came the sounds of two bodies tangled with each other, low and wanton.

"General Johnson, aren't you afraid he'll get jealous and leave you?" Clay's soft, teasing voice drifted out, threaded with a hint of teasing.

Evanna's voice was laced with sobs and moans. "Faster. He's all that's left of the Campbell family. He has no choice but to depend on my family for survival. In the soft, glittering comforts of Carvon, all he knows is pleasure and indulgence.

"It's natural that he has no idea how many hard choices are made on the battlefield. Don't be upset, Clay. I'll teach him these things, bit by bit."

I sat outside and listened the entire night, until the chill sank straight into my bones.

I was doing another round through the wounded when Evanna grabbed the hem of my robe, sobbing with every breath. "Benedict, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. Can you please just come back to me?"I frowned. "General Johnson, please show some self-respect.""Benedict, you still have feelings for me, don't you? Otherwise, you wouldn't have asked for an imperial order to execute Clay, the wretch he was!" She clung to my robe like a madwoman, trying to press herself against me.I stepped back and looked at her with cool detachment."Benedict, don't go! I know that even though you and Princess Ophelia are always together, you don't truly feel anything for her, right? I swear I know where I went wrong, and I promise I won't do it again. Please, come home with me." Evanna laughed and cried all at once, her eyes full of desperate pleading.I crouched down so we were eye to eye and spoke each word slowly, afraid she might miss a single one."You're wrong. I, Benedict Campbell, love

Evanna had forgotten that my martial skills far surpassed hers. If I hadn't held back, she wouldn't have even brushed the hem of my robe. She stared at me in disbelief when she was kicked out of my tent."General Johnson, you're not going to accuse me of hitting a woman, are you?" I looked at her, my smile mocking. "There's no difference between men and women on the battlefield. There are only comrades in arms and the bond between friends."A flush crept over her face. The very words she'd once used to lecture me, I had now returned to her, unchanged.I'd spent far longer on the battlefield than she had, but she was the first person I'd ever met to have thrown away all sense of honor and shame so thoroughly."You came here just to get back at me, didn't you?" Evanna scrambled to her feet and glared at me. "All I did was divorce you, and you ran off with Princess Ophelia, ignoring all boundaries between men and women. I saw you flirting with her the other day!"Instead of staying i

"Alright, then." I turned around and walked off with a loud laugh.Everyone in the estate thought I'd gone mad with grief. Well, the Johnsons were wrong if they thought I would just hand over what was mine.I went straight back to a small courtyard in the southern part of the city. I opened the chest there to see banknotes and land deeds laid out in perfect order. My personal assets and the Johnson estate's accounts had always been kept strictly separate. I'd originally planned to leave this money to my children one day so they wouldn't have to worry. I never imagined I'd be using it now instead. As for the chest of pearls and gems left behind, I would treat it as the Johnsons' burial offerings. They had just about used up the Campbell family's favor, after all.For now, I needed to make sure the emperor felt guilty toward me.…The next time I went to see the emperor, it was because the princess, Ophelia Pembroke, had been badly wounded on the battlefield.I requested an imper

Evanna was stunned.I smoothed my expression, returning to a calm, mild tone. "Since the Johnson household is no longer mine to manage, it's also no longer my place to beg for the pills."My parents once taught me that I had to cherish my wife if I wanted a peaceful home. But now, the Johnson estate was no longer my home, and Evanna wouldn't necessarily remain my wife for much longer."General Johnson, since Lord Campbell refuses to beg for the medicine, send one of the men from the army. The money for the pills can come out of my own reward and salary." Clay held Evanna's hand tightly. "It's only a matter of asking for some medicine. I can't bear to see you upset over this."Only asking for some medicine, huh? How nicely worded.Evanna looked at me, disappointment filling her eyes. "We've been married for three years, and you can't even compare to Clay."I found it laughable. There had never been much real affection between us. Everything I'd done up to now was more than I owed

For the past three years, I'd been so humble and accommodating that everyone seemed to have forgotten that I came from a household of generals.I turned and strode away without another look back."Get back here, you ungrateful wretch! Clay is an army physician who has risked his life with Eva. What the hell is so great about you compared to him?" Stuart roared from behind me.My steps didn't falter, but bitterness spread through my chest.…Just as I had expected, the Johnson family collapsed the very next day without my backing. They couldn't even scrape together the condolence payments owed to the soldiers' families.Evanna returned home for the first time in a long while. The first thing she did was to come and question me."Why didn't you release the condolence payments?" she demanded, her face twisted with anger.I was practicing calligraphy at my desk. "Your father already stripped me of the right to manage the household accounts. That money's on the estate's books now. I

I revealed the layers of darkness in Evanna's heart, one word at a time. Her gaze turned cold and sharp as she stared me down like I was an enemy on the battlefield. After a long pause, her voice came out hoarse. "Go ahead and try me."…After that last confrontation, Evanna didn't come home for several days. My father-in-law, Stuart Johnson, sent someone to summon me over for drinks.A few goblets in, he clapped me on the shoulder and said, "Benedict, having more people in the family is a blessing. I think Clay is a decent man. In the future, he'll be by Eva's side when she's away at war. He won't be here to compete with you."Everything in this household will still be yours. Take my advice. A man has to be generous if he wants to keep a woman's heart."The more I drank, the colder the chill the wine sent through me. I set my goblet down and stayed silent.Stuart wanted to continue persuading me, but I stopped the goblet he was practically pressing to my lips. I said, "Father,
