Chapter 3

Author: Foxy Piglet
Evanna left with Clay. Meanwhile, I sat alone in my chambers and didn't make a scene. At last, Father's old retainer returned with an imperial summons.

In the council hall, I kneeled and bowed my head. "Your Majesty, I beg you to allow me to divorce."

"Benedict, get up," the emperor said, looking like he had a headache coming on. "Your family's estate has long since become a pile of ruins, and it is empty and abandoned. Where exactly will you go after the divorce?"

"I'll return to another of our estates. It won't be empty once I'm there," I said. "Your Majesty, I am willing to exchange the Campbell family's military merits for permission to dissolve my marriage with the Johnson family."

I bowed my head again.

The emperor sighed when he saw how determined I was. "I'll allow it. But Benedict, you need to give me some time. General Johnson has just returned victorious, and morale is high. Take the time to get your affairs in order first."

"I understand. Thank you, Your Majesty." I bowed my head again, this time in thanks.

Evanna had just returned with a victory. At the celebration banquet two nights ago, the emperor, tipsy with wine, had jokingly said he would promote her.

These past few days, people had been coming nonstop to offer their congratulations. Even the Ministry of Rites had sent people to take her measurements.

But after I returned home, the emperor awarded the army, promoting everyone by half a rank—everyone except Evanna.

With Father's favor behind her, plus this recent victory, she should have been in line for an exceptional reward. But now, nothing had happened.

She nervously went to request an audience with the emperor, but he refused to see her. He only sent a chamberlain to dismiss her and send her back.

Evanna wasn't a total fool. That very afternoon, she stormed straight into my chambers. "I never thought you'd turn out to be such a conniving, despicable man, Benedict!"

She seldom raised her voice, but she was now shouting at the top of her lungs as she swept all the books from my desk onto the floor.

I glanced at the scattered books littering the floor and couldn't help the faint smile tugging at my lips. "I've simply withdrawn my father's protection. How does that make me conniving and despicable?"

Evanna slowly calmed down and scrutinized me from head to toe. After three years of being an almighty general, she'd forgotten how she'd once groveled at my father's feet, humbly begging him to have me marry her.

"You're jealous, aren't you?" She suddenly laughed.

Then, she looked at me with open scorn and contempt. "You really are just like Clay said, always scheming with those petty tricks fit for concubines and consorts.

"You're nothing but jealous of him, and you still want me to love you, so you went and tattled in front of His Majesty without a care for the consequences. Can you even call yourself a man?"

I lifted my head and stared at her, searching her face for even the smallest hint of guilt. All I found there was absolute certainty, like this was perfectly reasonable.

In her mind, this was who I was.

"Since you detest me so, General Johnson, why don't we just divorce today so that you're free to have Physician Armstrong move in with his head held high?" I asked.

"You even want to divorce me?" A flicker of anger and humiliation flashed in Evanna's eyes as she stalked toward me. "Benedict, the Campbell family is gone. All the Campbell soldiers died in battle with your father. I'm all you have left now.

"You're a useless ornament shut away in the inner residence all day. Who else would ever want you if you were to leave me?

"I promise I still like you, Benedict. As long as you behave yourself, I won't touch your position as my husband. You can still live in comfort and respect in Carvon."

She lowered her voice as she spoke, sounding almost coaxing. What a considerate, devoted wife I had.

It made me laugh. "Is it me that you like, or is it the shelter of my father's military achievements? Without his military merits, how could you, a minor fifth-rank official, have climbed to a full third-rank official in just three years?

"You're afraid the troops will stop supporting you if we divorce, and you're even more afraid of breaking faith with the imperial family. You want to continue using the Campbell family's deaths as your stepping stones toward higher ranks. Tell me if I'm wrong."

I was doing another round through the wounded when Evanna grabbed the hem of my robe, sobbing with every breath. "Benedict, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. Can you please just come back to me?"I frowned. "General Johnson, please show some self-respect.""Benedict, you still have feelings for me, don't you? Otherwise, you wouldn't have asked for an imperial order to execute Clay, the wretch he was!" She clung to my robe like a madwoman, trying to press herself against me.I stepped back and looked at her with cool detachment."Benedict, don't go! I know that even though you and Princess Ophelia are always together, you don't truly feel anything for her, right? I swear I know where I went wrong, and I promise I won't do it again. Please, come home with me." Evanna laughed and cried all at once, her eyes full of desperate pleading.I crouched down so we were eye to eye and spoke each word slowly, afraid she might miss a single one."You're wrong. I, Benedict Campbell, love

Evanna had forgotten that my martial skills far surpassed hers. If I hadn't held back, she wouldn't have even brushed the hem of my robe. She stared at me in disbelief when she was kicked out of my tent."General Johnson, you're not going to accuse me of hitting a woman, are you?" I looked at her, my smile mocking. "There's no difference between men and women on the battlefield. There are only comrades in arms and the bond between friends."A flush crept over her face. The very words she'd once used to lecture me, I had now returned to her, unchanged.I'd spent far longer on the battlefield than she had, but she was the first person I'd ever met to have thrown away all sense of honor and shame so thoroughly."You came here just to get back at me, didn't you?" Evanna scrambled to her feet and glared at me. "All I did was divorce you, and you ran off with Princess Ophelia, ignoring all boundaries between men and women. I saw you flirting with her the other day!"Instead of staying i

"Alright, then." I turned around and walked off with a loud laugh.Everyone in the estate thought I'd gone mad with grief. Well, the Johnsons were wrong if they thought I would just hand over what was mine.I went straight back to a small courtyard in the southern part of the city. I opened the chest there to see banknotes and land deeds laid out in perfect order. My personal assets and the Johnson estate's accounts had always been kept strictly separate. I'd originally planned to leave this money to my children one day so they wouldn't have to worry. I never imagined I'd be using it now instead. As for the chest of pearls and gems left behind, I would treat it as the Johnsons' burial offerings. They had just about used up the Campbell family's favor, after all.For now, I needed to make sure the emperor felt guilty toward me.…The next time I went to see the emperor, it was because the princess, Ophelia Pembroke, had been badly wounded on the battlefield.I requested an imper

Evanna was stunned.I smoothed my expression, returning to a calm, mild tone. "Since the Johnson household is no longer mine to manage, it's also no longer my place to beg for the pills."My parents once taught me that I had to cherish my wife if I wanted a peaceful home. But now, the Johnson estate was no longer my home, and Evanna wouldn't necessarily remain my wife for much longer."General Johnson, since Lord Campbell refuses to beg for the medicine, send one of the men from the army. The money for the pills can come out of my own reward and salary." Clay held Evanna's hand tightly. "It's only a matter of asking for some medicine. I can't bear to see you upset over this."Only asking for some medicine, huh? How nicely worded.Evanna looked at me, disappointment filling her eyes. "We've been married for three years, and you can't even compare to Clay."I found it laughable. There had never been much real affection between us. Everything I'd done up to now was more than I owed

For the past three years, I'd been so humble and accommodating that everyone seemed to have forgotten that I came from a household of generals.I turned and strode away without another look back."Get back here, you ungrateful wretch! Clay is an army physician who has risked his life with Eva. What the hell is so great about you compared to him?" Stuart roared from behind me.My steps didn't falter, but bitterness spread through my chest.…Just as I had expected, the Johnson family collapsed the very next day without my backing. They couldn't even scrape together the condolence payments owed to the soldiers' families.Evanna returned home for the first time in a long while. The first thing she did was to come and question me."Why didn't you release the condolence payments?" she demanded, her face twisted with anger.I was practicing calligraphy at my desk. "Your father already stripped me of the right to manage the household accounts. That money's on the estate's books now. I

I revealed the layers of darkness in Evanna's heart, one word at a time. Her gaze turned cold and sharp as she stared me down like I was an enemy on the battlefield. After a long pause, her voice came out hoarse. "Go ahead and try me."…After that last confrontation, Evanna didn't come home for several days. My father-in-law, Stuart Johnson, sent someone to summon me over for drinks.A few goblets in, he clapped me on the shoulder and said, "Benedict, having more people in the family is a blessing. I think Clay is a decent man. In the future, he'll be by Eva's side when she's away at war. He won't be here to compete with you."Everything in this household will still be yours. Take my advice. A man has to be generous if he wants to keep a woman's heart."The more I drank, the colder the chill the wine sent through me. I set my goblet down and stayed silent.Stuart wanted to continue persuading me, but I stopped the goblet he was practically pressing to my lips. I said, "Father,
