FREYA

I didn’t look back at Leo as I reached the car. Lizzy was already opening the passenger door when I approached, but she paused when she saw my face. “What happened?”

“Nothing you need to worry about, Lizzy. Come on, let’s go.”

She glanced past me to where Leo was still standing several feet away, his face tight with anger. Caroline stood beside him, watching everything with an expression I couldn’t read.

Lizzy looked back at me. “That doesn’t look like nothing.”

“I’ll explain when

FREYA Packing to leave took longer than I expected, mostly because Lizzy had decided that helping meant picking up everything I owned and asking whether I still wanted it. She held up a pair of shoes from across the room. “These? You haven’t worn them since we got here.” “That doesn’t mean I don’t want them.” Lizzy looked at the shoes, then at me. “They’re ugly.” I stopped folding the blouse in my hands. “Put my shoes in the suitcase.” “You have no taste when you’re emotionally attached to things.” “They’re shoes, Lizzy. What emotional attachment could I possibly have to them?” “I don’t know. You’re the one defending them.” I threw the blouse at her. She laughed and ducked before tossing the shoes into the suitcase. I watched them land on top of the clothes I had spent ten minutes folding and pointed at her. “Take them out and put them in properly.” Lizzy sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed her palms against her thighs. She looked toward the suitcase. “Are you sure we’re d

CHAPTER 106FREYALizzy touched my arm. “I’m coming with you.” She shook her head. “You’re pregnant, someone might have been poisoning you for Goddess knows how long, and you’re planning to move back to a pack you haven’t lived in for six years. I’m coming.” Despite everything, I smiled. “You make it sound terrible.” “It sounds terrible because it is terrible.” “You were scared of Silverstone yesterday.” “I’ve changed. Growth can be very fast.” I laughed. Lizzy squeezed my arm. “I’m serious.” Her face brightened. “But you’re carrying your own bags.” Her smile disappeared. “I take it back.” She groaned and fell backward onto my bed. I left her complaining and went to find Madame Claire. She was in her office, reading through a folder when I knocked. She waved me inside without looking up. “If this is about tomorrow’s research schedule, I’ve already moved the morning session.” “It’s not.” She looked up. Something in my face must have warned her because she immediately closed

FREYAPaul leaned back. “Fatigue would be almost immediate, difficulty shifting, a weaker connection to your wolf. Slower healing in some cases. The effects depend on the substance, dosage and frequency.” My fingers tightened together. “My wolf has been weak for years.” Paul nodded slowly. “Which is why I ran these tests.” I stared at him. For years, I had blamed myself. I had thought something inside me was simply wrong. Derek’s hand closed over mine. I looked at him. His face was hard, but the anger in his eyes wasn’t directed at me. “Who had access to her?” he asked Paul. Paul frowned. “That’s not a medical question. I wouldn’t know.” “I’m aware.” Derek immediately turned to me. I shook my head. “Please don’t ask. I don’t know.” “At least tell me who prepared your meals?” “Different people. Pack staff sometimes. I cooked sometimes. And I barely take medicine.”He stopped. I pulled my hand away and stood because sitting suddenly felt impossible. “There are too many possibil

FREYA “I don’t know yet.” I walked toward the door, but before I reached it, Leo’s voice came from the hallway. “Freya?” I stopped with my hand halfway toward the knob. Derek had heard him too. “Is that Leo?” “Yes, and don’t start.” I lowered my voice as I reached for the handle. “I’m not keeping you on the phone while I talk to him.” “I wasn’t going to ask you to.” He paused for a second. “Call me afterward if you need me, no matter how late it is. And tomorrow, we’re going to see Paul. So be ready for that.” Something warm moved through my chest. “Okay. Goodnight, Derek.” “Tomorrow,” he reminded me, and I smiled despite the nervousness building inside me. “Tomorrow,” I repeated before ending the call. Then I went back to bed and fell asleep. I didn’t want to talk to him. It was already late enough. I would talk to anyone that needed talking to in the morning. The next morning, I woke and showered early. I felt anxious for some reason as I finished dressing.

FREYA The silence on the other end was immediate, and when Derek spoke again, the teasing had disappeared from his voice. “Why?” “He overheard me talking to Caroline about the divorce, then came inside demanding answers.” I leaned back against the pillows. “We argued for a while, but nothing happened.” “What did he ask you?” Derek questioned, and I could already hear the tension creeping into his voice. I hesitated before deciding there was no point hiding it from him. “He asked whether we slept together, and I told him the truth.” Derek went quiet again. I waited several seconds before sitting straighter, wondering why he suddenly had nothing to say. “Derek? Are you still there?” “I’m here.” He released a slow breath. “You actually told him?” “Why wouldn’t I?” My brows pulled together even though he couldn’t see me. “I wasn’t going to stand there and act ashamed of what happened between us.” His voice softened when he answered. “You could have lied to avoid the argument that

FREYA The door had barely closed behind Leo when another knock sounded. I stared at it for a moment, wondering if he had changed his mind already, before pushing myself off the bed. “Who is it?” I asked as I walked toward the door, still irritated enough that I wasn’t in the mood for another argument. “Me,” Caroline answered from the other side, and I rolled my eyes before opening the door. She stood in the hallway with her arms folded tightly across her chest. Her eyes darted past me into the room before returning to my face. “Is he gone?” I frowned at the question and stepped aside. “You didn’t see him leave? He literally just walked out of here.” “I hid when I heard him coming,” she admitted, pushing past me before I could invite her inside. The confession stopped me from closing the door for a second. “You hid from Leo?” I asked, turning to look at her. A laugh escaped me when she immediately frowned. “You claim you can convince the man to sign divorce papers, but you’re hi

FREYA I went to work at the pack hospital. Lizzy was already waiting for me in my office. Though Lizzy was a witch and not a werewolf, she was widely accepted by the seven packs as one of the best doctors. “I saw Leo bring Caroline in. What happened? Are you okay?” she questioned worriedly. I e

My chest was squeezed hard from the inside.I waited breathlessly for Leo to push Caroline away, or at least chide her, but he didn't. I backed away from both of them, my fingers twisted. I

FREYA"The woman shall not become pregnant without authorization during the marriage, otherwise it will be regarded as a violation of the agreement.”I remembered clearly what was in the marital agreement that I just broke. It was only one night that I forgot to take the pill. A month before my ma

FREYAMy skin tingled all over as my body flattened against Leo’s. A small, sad smile crossed my lips. “What on earth are you doing, Leo?” I was surprised that he made any effort to dance with me. After seeing Caroline dressed so beautifully downstairs, I had assumed she would be his partner. “
