KAELON’S POV

The silence in my study was a balm, at least for the first few seconds. I sat behind my desk, a whiskey untouched in front of me, the ice long since melted. The warm amber liquid looked inviting, but I knew better. I didn’t need a drink. I needed to set things right.

Some control over the chaos that had become my life.

A soft knock came at the door.

"Come in," I said, my voice as level as I could manage.

Evelyn entered, her heels muffled against the thick rug. She was poised as always, clipboard in hand, dressed in one of her no-nonsense suits. The way she walked told me something was off before she even opened her mouth.

"Sir," she said, stopping a few feet from the desk. "We have new intel. I thought it best you heard it directly."

I motioned for her to go on.

"It’s Liv," she said.

Everything inside me stilled.

"She was visited yesterday right after she arrived at her friend’s place... by Martha."

My grip tightened on the armrest. "Martha?"

Evelyn nodded. "Yes, sir. We

LIV’S POVThere was something about Saturday mornings that always made the world feel a little softer, a little slower, like it was trying to apologize for all the madness of the week. I sat back into the plush cushions of the booth, nursing a warm cup of caramel latte between my palms while the familiar chatter of my friends buzzed around me like a comforting symphony.Lara, predictably animated, waved her hands dramatically in the air as she launched into yet another story about that same poor soul at her firm who had apparently committed the cardinal sin of trying to buy her lunch."You guys, you should have seen his face," Lara said, tossing her sleek black hair over her shoulder with a flourish. "The audacity! He just assumed that because he’s Mr. Big-Shot-Lawyer, I'd be swooning over a soggy sub sandwich he brought over like it was the crown jewels."Rose chuckled, swirling her mimosa lazily. "What did you do? Tell me you did something savage."Lara’s lips curled into a mischiev

AARON’S POVThe wheels of the last suitcase thudded dully against the marble floors of the Blackwood mansion as the butler and two other servants hustled to load it into my car. I stood there for a moment, hands shoved deep into the pockets of my jacket, watching the home I had grown up in with a detached sort of emptiness. It didn’t feel like home anymore. Not with the ghosts hanging in the air. Not with betrayal thick enough to choke on.I glanced toward the grand staircase. My eyes lingered for a beat, then I turned and headed down the east wing. One last thing to do before I left this place for good.Kaelon's study. The heavy oak door loomed ahead, polished to a shine that could blind a man if the light hit it just right. I knocked once, sharp and deliberate, then pushed it open without waiting for an answer.Inside, Kaelon sat behind his massive mahogany desk, the soft clicking of keys filling the air. His back was straight, his face impassive, the faint blue glow of his computer

VIV’S POVI stirred awake to the shrill ringing of my phone vibrating on the nightstand. Blinking against the dim light filtering through the heavy hotel curtains, I reached for it blindly, my fingers fumbling against the smooth glass screen.Martha’s name flashed across it.Groaning, I sat up, feeling the heavy weight of my belly shift uncomfortably. My hand instinctively cradled the mound under my loose nightshirt. It was day two since I left home and already, the loneliness, the discomfort, and the sheer irritation were gnawing at me.I swiped to answer. "Hello?" My voice was groggy but laced with urgency."Vivienne," Martha’s prim voice came through, laced with triumph. "I have it."I sat straighter. "You have it?""Yes. I made a brief recording when I tried to kiss Kaelon," she said breathlessly. "He pushed me away before I could, but it’s clear in the video. Clear enough."I pressed my palm hard against my chest, feeling my heart thudding. "That’s enough, ma'am," I said quickly,

KAELON’S POVI turned to face Aaron slowly, the weight of his footsteps pounding against the marble floor echoing louder than my thoughts. The coldness in my stare wasn’t deliberate, but it settled in like an old friend, familiar and protective."It’s none of your business," I said flatly, my voice like gravel dragged across steel.Aaron stopped mid-stride, his jaw tightening. “What the fuck are you saying?” he snapped. “She is my mother, for fuck's sake. That makes it my goddamn business.”Martha shifted uncomfortably beside him, her hand brushing against his arm as if to anchor him.“Don’t worry, Aaron,” she said softly. “I’ll leave.”He turned to her, frustration radiating off him in waves. Still, he guided her out with an arm gently around her back. I watched the door close behind them, tension rippling through me like a storm just barely contained beneath my skin.Minutes passed. Each second felt like a jagged blade dragging across my spine. Then the door burst open again.Aaron

VIV’S POVThe sun had dipped beneath the horizon, setting the sky ablaze with streaks of orange and plum. But I barely noticed. My grip on the steering wheel was tight, my jaw tighter. Aaron’s voice still echoed in my ears like a shrill alarm I couldn’t silence. The nerve of Aaron to call me out for speaking to his mother, as if I hadn’t exhausted every ounce of patience trying to bring him back to reality. He had flipped the script like I was the villain, like I hadn’t bent over backward for him.I pulled into the circular driveway of the Preston family estate just as twilight surrendered to night. The house was aglow, all warm light and cozy shadows. But it felt cold to me. Colder than the air that bit at my bare arms when I stepped out of the car. I slammed the door and stomped toward the entrance, heart pounding and fury bubbling just beneath my skin. The second I walked into the house, I knew. He was waiting. My father. He was perched on the armrest of his favorite chair, an un

LIV’S POVI barely got both feet through the door before the smell of something sweet. Probably Rose’s famous honey buns welcomed me. Then came the squeals."She's back!"Arms wrapped around me from all directions, warm bodies pressing in with laughter and excited chatter. I dropped my purse by the side table and hugged my girls back. The familiar chaos of home was comforting."Paris was too short," Vio said, squeezing my shoulders."You look tired though," Rose noted, stepping back to assess me like I was a dress she was about to tailor.Lara crossed her arms with a smug look. "Let me guess. Lover boy Kaelon cut it short?"Rose and Vio broke into laughter. I rolled my eyes and gave them a half-smile."It wasn’t like that," I said, heading for the kitchen where someone had opened a bottle of rosé. I reached for a glass, then stopped myself. Old habit. "It’s been a long day. Aaron called his mom, Martha Rhys and she flew in from wherever the fuck she’s been hiding all these years."The

Aaron’s POVThe late afternoon sunlight filtered through the tall glass windows of my study, painting golden lines across the hardwood floor. I leaned back in my leather chair, a tumbler of bourbon in hand, not because I needed it, but because it added something familiar to the space. Ryan and Dante sat across from me, both perched on the edge of the couch like they were waiting for news I hadn’t yet dropped."You sure about this, man?" Ryan asked, fingers laced behind his head. "Moving out? This place is like a palace. You own it.""Yeah," Dante chimed in. "Why the hell would you want to leave this mansion and go to a condo?"I sipped slowly, eyes drifting to the quiet street below. "It’s not about the size or the damn view. It’s about peace. About space. About not constantly being haunted."Ryan snorted. "Haunted? Please don’t say you mean Liv."I didn’t answer immediately. The silence in the room thickened."Look," I finally said, setting my glass down. "Being here... it reminds m

VIV’S POVThe Blackwood Mansion has always been magnificent up close. It had the kind of beauty that slapped you in the face, then dared you to be worthy of it. But I knew better than to go close to it.Kaelon might think that I was here to steal and might use that against me. I sighed.I walked with Martha towards the sidewalk leading up to the main estate. It was as if she was treading with caution too. But the walk still felt longer than it should have, mostly because I was waddling like a penguin and trying to keep the tension in my chest from boiling over. Martha Rhys walked in front of me, measured and composed, the kind of woman who had probably learned to weaponize silence before she learned to speak. We didn’t talk until we entered the shaded terrace far away from any of the cameras that might be watching. Kaelon was smart, he will know about this meeting, but what he won’t know, is what it was about. The common idea would be that I want to tell her that I’m carrying Aaron’s
