The paper trembled in my hands as I read the words again, as if staring hard enough would make them dissolve into smoke. But they remained. Cold, precise letters that reminded me of my new found reality.

He seemed to like doing things the traditional because instead of a pen, a quill dipped in a jar, sat there. My pulse hammered as I dipped the quill into the ink. My signature bled across the bottom of the page, binding me to a fate that I craved and detested at the same time.

“There,” I whispered, forcing steadiness into my voice. “It’s done.”

I placed the quill down, slid the parchment back toward him, and rose from the chair. His face was uncharacteristically solemn as he watched me. There was nothing in his eyes but unending icy humour and it felt like I had just signed my death sentence.

I blinked, and it was gone. Replaced by the normal amused smirk I had started to get used to.
