SCARLETT

I replayed his last sentence over and over during the next few hours. It was a way of blotting out everything else.

The doors unlock and few women come in. I guessed correctly, they were here to prepare me.

Now that I think about it, I had never really been prepared for all that life had thrown my way. I accepted it as it came, whimpering and sulking about life's unfairness.

‘Please step into the bath.”

In my reverie, a bath had been prepared right there in the cell. I gave a quick nod and turned away, hoping to the goddess to provide me an opportunity to actually prepare for what was coming.

I had to kill the vampire king somehow. It was my only way of escape. I refused to be the breeding ground for any man anymore.

I stepped into the bath, hissing as the hot water almost peeled off my skin. The heat stung worse when it touched between my thighs, reigniting the raw pain left behind by the baby I had lost.

My body was still tender, and my heart still bleeding, and yet the

SCARLETT A hand tightened around my wrist.I turned around, heart jumping into my throat, ready to give whoever was holding me a black eye.It was the innkeeper. His eyes had turned and brimmed with urgency. He jerked his chin toward the counter.I hesitated. The voices thundered closer. The door hinges groaned as boots hit the floor.“Search every room.”Without delay, the innkeeper yanked at me. My feet moved before my brain caught up. I stumbled behind the counter. He shoved at the wall panel, and a narrow gap, just wide enough for a body opened.“Go,” he hissed.I ducked inside, pressing into the narrow space. The panel slid back into place just as the door crashed open and heavy steps stormed in.I clamped a hand over my mouth, my lungs fighting the urge to drag in air too fast. Through the thin wood I heard them interrogating the rest.Oh goddess please keep them safe.“Four of them,” the leader barked. “A vampire, a witch, two wolves. Where are they?”My stomach dropped. They

SCARLETT BANGThe sound of the gun being fired resounded in the air. This was it. This was where everything ended. But the hot sting of iron kissing my skin and the terrible pain that followed did not come. My arms trembled as if from shock. I let my eyes flutter closed because the dark felt safer. When I opened them again, the rifle’s barrel hung uselessly, pointed away from me with smoke emanating from the edge. Adam’s shadow loomed at the lip of the wall, crouching low as he had lunged up without a sound. One of his hands clamped around Leo’s wrist. The other held him tight by the neck. “Scarlett!” His voice startled me back to reality. “Climb.”I didn’t need the order twice. My fingers scrabbled for the last handhold. Leo’s voice screamed frantic desperation as he struggled against Adam. “Get off me! You bitch! What are you doing here?! You’re not welcome here. Do you hear me? Stupid—” his words broke into venom and then panic.I gritted my teeth and hauled myself up and

ScarlettCaleb crumpled where he knelt, shoulders heaving, but I didn’t look back. There was no space left in my heart for him. No pity or mercy. He had carved that out of me with every betrayal, every scar he left behind.Adam touched my elbow lightly. A signal, not a comfort. “Move.”I obeyed, my hood falling lower over my face as we slipped deeper into the shadows hugging the wall. The fortress rose above me like a jagged nightmare, its stone slippery with dew. My breath misted in the cold air, each exhale too loud in my own ears.Ezra’s staff hummed faintly, vibrating in rhythm with the guards above. He whispered. “We have minutes, no more.”Harley pressed her hand into mine. Her grip was firm, grounding, but her eyes brimmed with the same fear that scraped raw inside my chest. “Don’t hesitate,” she whispered. “Once you’re halfway up, don’t look down.”I nodded, even though my knees already shook.Adam went first, scaling the stone like it had grown handholds just for him. . SCARLETTThe first glimpse of the Fate Pack walls stole my breath.I had tears shimmering in my eyes from being able to see them…again. They stood like giant mountains forged from iron and stone. Watchtowers dotted the length, each one having guards and wolves in shifted forms pacing the perimeter. But it was no longer a sanctuary, no longer the homeland I had loved as a child. It was now a fortress. Cold and impenetrable. No one could walk in or out without being seen. And if they saw me, they would not hesitate. I would be crowned or killed before the day even ended.Adam’s voice cut through the uncomfortable silence. “There’s no entry point here. Not with those guards. If they search you, they’ll find the mark before you can even think of running.”Ezra leaned on his staff, his eyes scanning the wall as if he could see through it. “The patrol patterns are rigid but predictable. They are trained for brute force, not infiltration. If we move under cover of night and with the right

SCARLETT “Still awake?”Harley’s voice was soft, though her shadow was sharp where she lingered by the doorway.I didn’t answer at first. My throat was too tight. She crossed the room and sat on the chair opposite me, her knees brushing mine. Her eyes were red, raw from tears she’ had tried to hide.“You’re thinking about the mark,” she said, not asking but stating.I forced a smile. “How could I not? Apparently, I’m some divine mistake.”Her lips pressed thin. “Scarlett, it’s not a mistake. The moon goddess doesn’t brand people by accident. That mark was meant for someone… someone chosen.”The word chosen sat like lead in my stomach. I had never been chosen for anything but pain.“Do you know what they’ll do if they find out?” Harley continued. Her voice trembled, though her eyes didn’t. “Half the pack will crown you, and the other half will want to slit your throat before dawn. Civil war already burns through them, your presence will be gasoline.”“Then maybe that’s what’s needed,”

SCARLETTHer hands moved steadily, wrapping the last bandage around my shoulder. Her touch was firm, precise, but I didn’t miss the way her breath caught when she brushed the ink etched into my skin. Her fingers froze. “Scarlett…”I stiffened. “What?”Her hand traced the mark just below my collarbone, where the edge of the bandage left it exposed. A black tattoo, shaped like a crescent blade tangled with thorned vines. I had almost forgotten it was there. Her eyes were wide with recognition, her face drained of color. “Where did you get this?”I looked away, jaw tightening. “It’s not important.”“The hell it isn’t,” she snapped, her voice sharper than I’d heard it in years. “Do you even know what this is?”My silence must have been enough. Harley stood abruptly, pacing the length of the small room, hands raking through her hair. She looked like she wanted to scream but couldn’t find the words.“Scarlett,” she said finally, turning back to me. “That’s the mark of the pure bred Alphas w
