Chapter 16: The Mystery Flowers

As Serenity walked into her studio the next morning, the air felt different.

Yesterday, she was just "Boss Vera," the talented but private designer. Today, she was a spectacle. Every head turned as she passed. Eyes widened with awe, curiosity, and undeniable envy. She wasn't just their boss anymore; she was Mrs. Sterling, the woman who had tamed New York’s coldest billionaire.

"Good... good morning, Miss... uh, Mrs. Sterling," the receptionist stuttered, standing up so fast she almost knocked over her coffee.

"Call me Vera," Serenity corrected her firmly, though her voice remained polite. "I am here to work, not to walk a red carpet. Everyone, please get back to your stations."

She marched straight into her office, ignoring the trail of whispers following her.

"Did you see the news? The way Mr. Sterling looked at her..."
"I thought she was single! How did she hide a husband like him?"

Serenity closed her office door, leaning against the cool wood with a heavy sigh. Being Jackson Sterling's wife was going to be exhausting.

Around noon, a knock on the door broke her concentration.

"Delivery for Miss Vera!"

A delivery man stumbled in, struggling to see over the massive, overflowing bouquet in his arms. It wasn't just a bouquet; it was a garden.

And they weren't ordinary roses. They were Blue Enchantresses—rare, impossibly expensive roses imported from Europe, their petals shimmering with an almost magical hue.

"Oh my god," Amy, her assistant, gasped, her eyes sparkling. "Boss, these are gorgeous! So romantic!"

The other employees gathered near the door, oohing and aahing.

"It must be from Mr. Sterling again," one designer whispered dreamily. "First he drives her to work in a Maybach, and now this? He really spoils her!"

"99 blue roses... do you know how much that costs? That's my rent for a year!"

Amy placed the heavy vase on Serenity’s desk with a teasing grin. "Boss, your husband is really aggressive with his affection today."

Serenity frowned, staring at the blue petals.

Jackson?

Sending Blue Enchantresses wasn't Jackson's style. He was a man of power and dominance. He preferred straightforward gifts—diamonds, real estate, cash. Blue roses were artistic, melancholic, poetic...

A strange feeling settled in her stomach.

"Is there a card?" Serenity asked.

"Yes, right here." Amy handed her a thick, cream-colored envelope sealed with wax.

Serenity broke the seal. As soon as she saw the elegant, sweeping handwriting inside, her heart skipped a beat—not out of love, but out of sheer shock.

The note read:

"Congratulations on your return to New York, my most brilliant student. Paris feels empty without you. I’m coming to reclaim my muse.

— Ryan"

Ryan.

Serenity’s breath hitched.

Ryan Laurent. The heir to the Laurent Fashion Empire in France. He had been her mentor when she arrived in Paris five years ago, broken and pregnant. He was the one who helped her build her career. He was gentle, kind, patient... and he had confessed his love to her multiple times.

She had rejected him because her heart was closed. But now... he was coming to New York? To "reclaim" her?

"Boss? You look pale," Amy asked, confused by Serenity's reaction. "Is it not from Mr. Sterling?"

Before Serenity could answer, the office door was pushed open.

"I brought lunch."

Jackson walked in. He looked out of place in the creative studio, wearing his sharp, three-piece business suit. He was carrying a takeout bag from a Michelin-star Japanese restaurant, looking slightly annoyed at having to perform such a menial task himself.

But the moment he stepped fully into the room, he froze.

His eyes locked onto the gigantic bouquet of blue roses dominating Serenity's desk.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.

Jackson walked over slowly. He didn't look at Serenity; he stared at the flowers as if they were poisonous.

"Blue roses," Jackson murmured, his voice low and dangerous. "I didn't send these."

He turned his gaze to Serenity, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. The possessiveness in his stare made Amy and the other staff quickly excuse themselves, sensing the coming storm.

"Who sent them?" Jackson demanded.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's.
