Chapter 36: The Eye of the City

The VIP ward of Lenox Hill Hospital.

"Stop moving, Jackson! The doctor said you need stitches!" Serenity scolded him, tears streaming down her face.

Jackson sat on the edge of the bed, shirtless. A doctor was stitching the deep gash on his shoulder. It looked painful, but Jackson didn't even flinch. He was only looking at Serenity.

"I'm fine, babe," Jackson reached out with his good hand to wipe her tears. "Don't cry. It makes me hurt more than the glass."

"You... you idiot," Serenity choked on a sob. "You could have died! That chandelier was huge!"

"But it didn't hit you," Jackson smiled faintly. "So it was a successful night."

"Done, Mr. Sterling," the doctor bandaged the wound. "Please rest for a week. No heavy lifting. And definitely no fighting."

"We're leaving," Jackson stood up immediately, putting on a fresh shirt Luke brought him.

"Jackson! The doctor said rest!" Serenity protested.

"I can rest at home. This hospital is not safe," Jackson’s eyes turned cold. "Whoever tried to kill us might come back to finish the job."

Meanwhile, at the Sterling Villa.

Alex sat in his dark room, his face illuminated by four computer screens. The news was playing on one screen: "Accident at Charity Gala: Jackson Sterling Injured."

Alex wasn't crying like a normal five-year-old. He was silent. And when Alex was silent, he was dangerous.

"They hurt Daddy," Alex whispered. His small fingers tightened into a fist.

He pulled up the security footage from the Museum. He rewinded to the moment the chandelier fell.

He saw the shadow on the catwalk.

"Enhance," Alex typed.

The image was blurry. The man was wearing a cap and a mask. Face not visible.

"Smart. But not smart enough," Alex opened a new program: Gait Analysis Algorithm.

"Scanning body language... Scanning walk pattern..."

He then accessed the New York City traffic camera database.

"Search for a male, 6 feet tall, slight limp on the left leg, leaving the museum at 8:45 PM."

Millions of faces flashed on the screen.

Five minutes later. Ping.

A match found.

A man entering a gray taxi three blocks away from the museum. He had taken off his maintenance uniform, revealing a gray trench coat underneath.

"Got you," Alex narrowed his eyes. "Now, where are you going?"

He tracked the taxi across the city grid. The taxi stopped at a shady motel in Queens.

Alex zoomed in on the motel entrance camera. He captured a clear image of the man’s face as he lit a cigarette.

He ran the face through the Interpol database (which he hacked last week for fun).

Name: Viktor Volkov.
Alias: The Viper.
Occupation: Contract Killer.
Status: Wanted in 12 countries.

Alex screenshotted the profile and the GPS location of the motel.

"The Viper?" Alex scoffed. "More like a worm."

He hit the "Send" button.

In the car driving home.

Jackson’s phone beeped. He checked it with a frown. It was a secure message from... his son?

He opened the file. His eyes widened.

It was everything. The killer's identity, his photo, his criminal record, and his real-time location in Queens.

Attached was a short message from Alex:
"Mommy is crying. Fix it. P.S. I want that Lego set tomorrow."

A dark, terrifying grin spread across Jackson's face.

"Luke," Jackson said, handing the phone to the front seat.

"We have the location. The Viper is in Queens, Room 204."

"What?" Luke was shocked. "How? Our intelligence team is still analyzing the scene!"

"My son is faster than your team," Jackson said proudly. "Turn the car around."

"Jackson?" Serenity grabbed his arm. "Where are we going? You are injured!"

"I am dropping you off at the Villa with the heaviest guard," Jackson kissed her hand gently. "Then I am going to Queens."

"No! It's dangerous!"

"He tried to kill you, Serenity," Jackson’s voice dropped to a whisper, full of lethal promise. "I don't leave loose ends. Tonight, the Viper learns what happens when he bites a Sterling."

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. The Midnight Express tore through the darkness of the Swiss Alps at 300 kilometers per hour.In the exclusive private dining car, crystal glasses jingled softly with the vibration of the tracks. Outside the window, nothing existed but snow and night.Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. Under his tuxedo, he was wearing a ceramic knife taped to his ribs—the only weapon the metal detectors didn't pick up.Serenity sat opposite him, looking breathtaking in a black velvet gown. She held a clutch that contained a small vial of Margaret’s anti-serum."Nervous?" Jackson asked, pouring her water."I’m having dinner with the man who tried to kidnap our children," Serenity’s eyes were cold. "I’m not nervous. I’m restraining myself from stabbing him with a fork.""Patience," Jackson whispered. The door at the end of the car slid open.A man walked in.He looked nothing like a villain. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white. The sky was purple. In the distance, a massive Black Tower stretched up into the clouds. It looked like a needle piercing the sky.Standing at the top of the tower was a man. He didn't have a face. Just a smooth, white mask with a single vertical line drawn on it."Come here, little star," the man’s voice echoed inside her head.
