Chapter 118: Off the Rails

last update Last Updated: 2026-02-17 19:23:30

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening.

The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.

Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below.

"Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.

Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon.

"The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.

CLANG.

The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open.

Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines.

They wore sleek, matte-black armor. No faces. Just glowing red visors. They moved with robotic precision, magnetized boots clinging to the steep floor.

Architect Drones. Human-machine hybrids.

"Eliminate witnesses," the first Drone synthesized a voice. It raised a suppressed submachine gun.

"Stay behind me!" Jackson released the window and slid down the floor, steering his body like a torpedo.

He crashed into the Drone's legs before it could fire.

The Drone fell. Jackson rolled on top of it. He took the ceramic knife he had taped to his chest and stabbed it viciously into the Drone’s neck.

SPARK!

It didn't bleed blood. It bled oil and white sparks. The ceramic blade severed the primary wiring. The Drone twitched and powered down.

"Machines," Jackson spat, standing up. "I hate machines."

The second Drone aimed at Serenity.

Jackson was too far away to stop it. "NO!"

Serenity didn't freeze. She was sliding down the floor towards the debris. She grabbed the bottle of vintage red wine (now broken) and threw it at the Drone's faceplate.

Smash.

The wine blinded the Drone’s sensors for a second.

"Target... Error," the Drone whirred, wiping its visor.

That second was enough. Serenity lunged.

She pulled the small glass vial of Anti-Serum (the one Margaret made for Arthur) from her clutch.

"Let's see if this works on batteries!" Serenity stabbed the needle into the Drone's exposed wrist joint and slammed the plunger.

The blue liquid hissed as it entered the hydraulic system.

The Drone screeched. The bio-acid formula was designed to destroy the Element, but it was also highly corrosive to the organic components of the cyborg.

It convulsed and collapsed, smoke pouring from its armor.

"Nice aim, Mrs. Sterling," Jackson reached out a hand and pulled her up.

SCREEECH—SNAP!

The train groaned again. The floor dropped two feet. The coupling was gone. Gravity was taking over.

"We have to jump!" Jackson looked at the jagged edge of the tunnel entrance, about ten feet away from the open door.

"It's too far!" Serenity looked at the gap.

"Trust me," Jackson grabbed her waist. "I will throw you. Luke is waiting."

"Throw me?!"

"One! Two! THREE!"

Jackson didn't give her a choice. He used all his strength to launch Serenity towards the snowy ledge.

She flew through the air, her hands grasping for the rocks.

A hand caught her wrist. It was Sebastian, who had emerged from the shadows of the tunnel.

"Got you, Highness!" Sebastian pulled her to safety.

Serenity scrambled up and looked back.

Jackson was still in the car. The carriage detached completely.

"Jackson!"

The train car plummeted into the abyss.

"NO!" Serenity screamed.

But at the last millisecond, a figure leapt from the falling wreckage. Jackson caught the edge of the railroad ties with one hand, his body dangling over the drop.

"Dad!" Alex and Luke ran forward, pulling Jackson up onto the solid ground.

They collapsed in the snow, watching the burning train car fall thousands of feet down, exploding at the bottom of the gorge.

Jackson lay on his back, breathing in the freezing air. He looked at Serenity, who was checking his arms for injuries.

"Zero tried to drop a train on us," Jackson panted, a dark grin spreading across his face. "Now it's personal."

Serenity slapped his chest, then kissed him fiercely. "You are never allowed to travel by train again."

"Deal," Jackson sat up. "Next time, we take the tank."

Outside the window, nothing existed but snow and night.Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white.
