LOGINRoute 4 Bridge. 10:00 PM.
The convoy of three armored trucks sped across the long suspension bridge over the dark river.
"Alex," Jackson spoke into his earpiece. "Status?"
"Dad! Three bogies closing in fast from behind! And two from the front!" Alex’s voice yelled. "They are jamming the signals. I can't call the police!"
"We don't need police," Jackson gripped the steering wheel. "Hold on tight."
SCREECH!
Two black SUVs blocked the front of the bridge. They didn't slow down. They rammed head-on into the lead truck of Jackson's convoy.
BOOM!
A massive fireball lit up the night sky.
The lead truck spun out and crashed into the railing, teetering over the edge.
Jackson slammed the brakes of his truck. He grabbed the tactical shotgun from the passenger seat.
"Serenity, stay inside until I say the code word!"
Jackson kicked his door open and rolled out just as bullets started pinging against the armored plating.
Shadows emerged from the fire. These weren't normal soldiers.
One of Arthur's men walked through the flames. His clothes were burning, but he didn't seem to feel it. His eyes glowed with a faint, sick green light. He walked up to a car blocking his way and flipped it over with his bare hands.
"They are enhanced," Jackson cursed. He aimed and fired.
Bang!
The shotgun blast hit the soldier in the chest. He stumbled back, fell... and then stood up again, shaking off the impact like a fly bite.
"Aim for the head!" Luke yelled from the rear truck, engaging with his rifle.
It was a massacre. Jackson’s security team was good, but they were fighting monsters.
Suddenly, a cold laugh echoed across the bridge.
Arthur Sterling stepped out of the smoke.
He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wore a pristine white suit that looked ghostly against the fire. He didn't carry a gun. He didn't need one.
"Jackson!" Arthur shouted, spreading his arms. "Bring her to me! Don't make me rip this truck apart piece by piece!"
Jackson reloaded his shotgun. "Come and get some, Uncle."
Jackson charged. He was faster than a normal human, trained in martial arts. He dodged Arthur's punch—a punch that dented the steel side of the truck.
Jackson fired point-blank at Arthur’s knee.
Arthur grunted, falling to one knee. But he healed instantly. He grabbed the barrel of the shotgun and bent it like a straw.
He backhanded Jackson across the face.
The force was incredible. Jackson flew backward, crashing into the guardrail. He tasted blood. His vision blurred.
"Pathetic," Arthur loomed over him. "I am evolved, Jackson. I am a god."
Arthur turned to the armored truck where Serenity was hiding.
"Aurelia!" Arthur yelled. He grabbed the heavy armored door. With a roar of inhuman effort, he ripped the locked door off its hinges and threw it into the river below.
Serenity sat inside, huddled in the darkness.
"There you are, my key," Arthur smiled, his eyes black with madness. He reached out to grab her.
"NOW!" Jackson screamed from the ground. "Viper!"
Serenity didn't scream. She lunged forward.
In her hand was the pneumatic syringe Margaret had built. It glowed with the blue anti-serum derived from her own blood.
Arthur realized the trap too late.
Hisssss.
Serenity stabbed the needle directly into Arthur's neck and depressed the plunger.
"NO!" Arthur shrieked.
He swatted Serenity away. She hit the wall of the truck hard, gasping for breath.
Arthur grabbed his neck. "What... what did you do to me?"
The veins in his face turned black. The glowing green light in his eyes flickered and died. He fell to his knees, vomiting black sludge.
"It's the cure, Uncle," Jackson limped over, wiping blood from his mouth. "You wanted her blood? You got it."
The strength drained from Arthur’s body. His skin started to sag, aging decades in seconds. The immortality serum was neutralized.
Without their leader's psychic link, the other super-soldiers paused, confused and disoriented.
Luke and the team took the shot. This time, the bullets worked. The monsters fell.
Arthur lay on the asphalt, an old, broken man gasping for air.
"You... ruined... perfection," Arthur wheezed.
"No," Serenity stepped out of the truck, standing next to Jackson. She looked at the defeated villain.
"We restored balance."
Sirens wailed in the distance. The police were finally breaking through.
Jackson wrapped his arm around Serenity, leaning his weight on her. They watched the fire burn on the bridge.
The Nightmare of Project Omega was over.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" The Midnight Express tore through the darkness of the Swiss Alps at 300 kilometers per hour.In the exclusive private dining car, crystal glasses jingled softly with the vibration of the tracks. Outside the window, nothing existed but snow and night.Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. She held a clutch that contained a small vial of Margaret’s anti-serum."Nervous?" Jackson asked, pouring her water."I’m having dinner with the man who tried to kidnap our children," Serenity’s eyes were cold. "I’m not nervous. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white. The horizon was white. It was a blank canvas."Whoa," Alex looked at his hands. They were glowing. "High definition rendering. Zero latency.""Where are the toys?" Aurora appeared next to him. That night, the Palace was quiet. But the air was heavy. In the royal nursery, five-year-old Aurora was tossing and turning in her bed. She was sweating.“No… go away…” she whimpered in her sleep.Around her room, objects began to react to her distress. Her teddy bears floated into the air. The heavy curtains rustled as if caught in a storm, though the windows were closed. The water in her glass began to boil.In the Dream:Aurora was standing in a field of grey ash. The sky was purple. In the distance, a massive Black Tower stretched up into the clouds. It looked like a needle piercing the sky.Standing at the top of the tower was a man. He didn't have a face. Just a smooth, white mask with a single vertical line drawn on it."Come here, little star," the man’s voice echoed inside her head. "Your light belongs to me."Shadowy hands reached out from the ground, grabbing Aurora’s ankles."Daddy!" she screamed in the dream. In the Real World:CRACK!The mirror on Aurora's wall shattered
