LOGINThe Sahara Desert. Sector 4.
The sun hung in the sky like a white-hot hammer, beating down on the endless ocean of dunes.
The temperature was 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
A convoy of beige, military-grade Land Rovers tore across the sand, leaving trails of dust behind them.
Inside the lead vehicle, the air conditioning was blasting at max power, but it was still losing the battle against the heat.
"This is un-civilized," Alex complained from the back seat. He was wearing desert goggles and a cooling vest. "My laptop is overheating. If the CPU hits 90 degrees, we lose satellite uplink."
"Pour some ice on it," Jackson drove the car with one hand, wearing a tactical shemagh (scarf) around his neck and dark aviator sunglasses. He looked less like a CEO and more like a special forces commander.
Serenity sat next to him. She wiped sweat from her forehead. She had left Aurora and Mia safely with Margaret in the fortified palace. This mission was too dangerous for babies.
"Are we close?" Serenity checked the GPS.
"The coordinates lead to the middle of nowhere," Jackson frowned at the empty horizon. "Either the map is wrong, or..."
"Or they are underground," Serenity finished his sentence.
Suddenly, the wind changed. The bright blue sky began to darken rapidly.
Luke's voice crackled over the radio from the car behind. "Boss! Six o'clock! We have a problem!"
Jackson looked in the rearview mirror.
A wall of brown, churning darkness was rising from the earth. It stretched from the ground to the sky, swallowing everything in its path.
"Sandstorm," Jackson gritted his teeth. "And a big one."
"It's moving at 60 miles per hour," Alex warned, checking the sensors. "It will hit us in two minutes. We will be blind."
"We can't stop," Jackson slammed his foot on the gas. "If we stop, we get buried. We have to beat it to the bunker entrance."
The engines roared as the vehicles accelerated over the shifting dunes. The wall of sand chased them like a hungry monster.
"Alex! I need a ping!" Jackson shouted over the noise of the wind. "Where is the door?"
"The sensors are jamming!" Alex typed furiously. "The static electricity from the sand is killing the signal! I'm flying blind!"
"Use your eyes!" Serenity unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned forward, squinting through the dusty windshield.
She saw something ahead. Not sand. Something geometric.
It was a large rock formation shaped like a claw.
"There!" Serenity pointed. "At the base of those rocks! I see a reflection! Metal!"
"Hold on!" Jackson spun the wheel.
The Rover drifted sideways, spraying sand, and skidded to a halt right next to the massive rock formation.
Just as they stopped, the sun disappeared.
ROAR.
The sandstorm hit. Day turned into night instantly. The windows were bombarded by millions of grains of sand, sounding like machine-gun fire.
"Masks on!" Jackson put on a filtered breathing mask. "Everyone out! Get to the rock face!"
They bailed out of the cars. The wind was strong enough to knock a man down. Visibility was zero.
Jackson grabbed Serenity’s hand, pulling her through the swirling chaos. Luke grabbed Alex.
"Over here!" Sebastian yelled, his voice barely audible. He was pointing his flashlight at a smooth section of the cliff.
It wasn't rock. It was a camouflage blast door painted to look like stone.
"Alex! Crack it!" Jackson shielded his son from the wind with his own body.
"I need a hard line connection!" Alex yelled, pulling a cable from his vest. He found an access port hidden under a fake rock.
The sand was piling up around their legs. If they didn't get in soon, they would suffocate.
"Come on, come on..." Alex tapped the code. "Open!"
HISSSS-CLANK.
Hydraulics groaned. The massive rock-door slowly slid open, revealing a dark, cool tunnel inside.
"Inside! Go! Go!" Jackson ushered them in.
As soon as the last person tumbled into the tunnel, Jackson hit the manual override switch. The heavy door slammed shut, sealing out the howling storm.
Silence. Blessed silence.
The air inside was cool and filtered.
Jackson pulled off his mask, shaking sand from his hair. He looked at Serenity. She was covered in dust, panting, but alive.
"Welcome to Sector Sand," Jackson looked down the long, illuminated corridor that led deep underground.
"We knocked on the front door," Serenity brushed sand off her clothes, her eyes fierce. "Now let's see who's home."

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. The Midnight Express tore through the darkness of the Swiss Alps at 300 kilometers per hour.In the exclusive private dining car, crystal glasses jingled softly with the vibration of the tracks. Outside the window, nothing existed but snow and night.Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. Under his tuxedo, he was wearing a ceramic knife taped to his ribs—the only weapon the metal detectors didn't pick up.Serenity sat opposite him, looking breathtaking in a black velvet gown. She held a clutch that contained a small vial of Margaret’s anti-serum."Nervous?" Jackson asked, pouring her water."I’m having dinner with the man who tried to kidnap our children," Serenity’s eyes were cold. "I’m not nervous. I’m restraining myself from stabbing him with a fork.""Patience," Jackson whispered. The door at the end of the car slid open.A man walked in.He looked nothing like a villain. He was handsome, in his forties, wearing a grey suit that cost more than the train itself. He had silver hair and a s
"Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white. The horizon was white. It was a blank canvas."Whoa," Alex looked at his hands. They were glowing. "High definition rendering. Zero latency.""Where are the toys?" Aurora appeared next to him. That night, the Palace was quiet. But the air was heavy. In the royal nursery, five-year-old Aurora was tossing and turning in her bed. She was sweating.“No… go away…” she whimpered in her sleep.Around her room, objects began to react to her distress. Her teddy bears floated into the air. The heavy curtains rustled as if caught in a storm, though the windows were closed. The water in her glass began to boil.In the Dream:Aurora was standing in a field of grey ash. The sky was purple. In the distance, a massive Black Tower stretched up into the clouds. It looked like a needle piercing the sky.Standing at the top of the tower was a man. He didn't have a face. Just a smooth, white mask with a single vertical line drawn on it."Come here, little star," the man’s voice echoed inside her head. "Your light belongs to me."Shadowy hands reached out from the ground, grabbing Aurora’s ankles."Daddy!" she screamed in the dream. In the Real World:CRACK!The mirror on Aurora's wall shattered
