Damien stared at the frozen security footage.

The image was grainy, but the ring was unmistakable.

A black onyx stone surrounded by a thin silver band.

He had seen it countless times.

On his uncle Richard's hand.

Richard Ashford had been one of the first people to arrive at the hospital after Damien's accident.

He had stayed beside Damien when he woke up.

He had told him everything was going to be fine.

He had helped him rebuild his company.

He had never once given Damien a reason to doubt him.

Until now.

"Send me the complete footage," Damien said.

Marcus's voice came through the phone.

"Already doing it."

Damien looked toward the hospital room.

Elena was still inside with Noah.

He couldn't tell her yet.

Not until he had proof.

Not until he knew how deep the betrayal went.

His phone vibrated.

The footage had arrived.

He watched again.

The figure entered his office.

Used his credentials.

Opened a file.

Then disappeared.

The face remained hidden.

But the ring didn't.

Damien clenched his jaw.

"Richard."

He said the name quietly.

And for the first time, he wondered whether the man had ever been his ally at all.

---

The next morning, Elena woke to the sound of someone knocking.

She had fallen asleep beside Noah's hospital bed.

She immediately stood.

A nurse entered.

"Ms. Carter?"

"Yes?"

"We have an update."

Elena's heart jumped.

"About Noah?"

"The doctor reviewed his latest results."

She waited.

"He is stable enough for the surgery."

Relief nearly brought her to tears.

"When?"

"Tomorrow morning."

Elena closed her eyes.

Tomorrow.

Finally.

After weeks of fear, Noah would receive the treatment he needed.

Then the nurse continued.

"There's one problem."

Elena's eyes opened.

"What?"

"The hospital still needs the remaining payment."

Her relief vanished.

"I thought the deposit had been extended."

"It was."

"But the surgery requires the balance."

Elena nodded slowly.

"How much?"

The nurse told her.

Elena felt the blood drain from her face.

She didn't have it.

Not even close.

"I'll find it."

The nurse gave her a sympathetic look before leaving.

Elena sat down.

For five years, she had always found a way.

But this time, she didn't know where to turn.

She looked at Noah.

"I'll fix this."

Her voice trembled.

"I promise."

---

Damien returned to the hospital shortly after.

He immediately noticed something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Elena looked at him.

"Nothing."

He didn't believe her.

"You look worried."

"My son's surgery is tomorrow."

Damien's expression softened.

"That's good."

"The hospital needs the remaining payment."

Silence.

Elena immediately shook her head.

"Don't."

"I haven't said anything."

"I know what you're thinking."

Damien stepped closer.

"Then let me help."

"No."

"Elena."

"I don't want your money."

His expression hardened slightly.

"This isn't about money."

"Then what is it?"

"He's a child who needs surgery."

Her eyes flashed.

"I've managed his life for five years."

"And you shouldn't have had to."

The words stopped her.

Damien took a breath.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"You don't even know if you should be forgiven."

"I know."

His voice softened.

"But if Noah is my son, I have a responsibility to him."

Elena looked away.

"And if he's not?"

Damien didn't hesitate.

"I'd still want to help."

That answer surprised her.

Because it wasn't about blood anymore.

It was about the boy.

---

At Ashford Tower, Richard Ashford sat behind his desk.

He looked at the photograph in front of him.

Elena.

Noah.

Damien.

His expression remained calm.

The door opened.

Victoria walked in.

"You shouldn't have accessed the laboratory."

Richard didn't look up.

"I needed to know how much Damien had discovered."

"You could have been seen."

"I wasn't."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"This has gone too far."

Richard finally looked at her.

"You knew what would happen if Damien remembered."

"I know."

"Then you understand why this cannot continue."

Victoria's face tightened.

"You promised no one would get hurt."

Richard's expression changed.

"I promised the family would survive."

"That isn't the same thing."

"No."

He stood.

"It isn't."

He walked toward the window.

"Damien was never supposed to find Elena."

"And Noah?"

Richard turned.

"Especially Noah."

Victoria's voice dropped.

"He's innocent."

Richard's gaze hardened.

"So was Damien."

The room fell silent.

---

That afternoon, Damien confronted Richard.

His uncle was sitting in the family dining room when Damien walked in.

"You're busy."

Richard smiled.

"Not for you."

Damien sat opposite him.

"I need to ask you something."

"Go ahead."

"Do you remember my accident?"

Richard's smile faded slightly.

"Of course."

"Do you remember where I was going that night?"

Richard's fingers tightened around his glass.

"I don't see why that matters."

"Answer me."

A pause.

"You were going to a business meeting."

Damien leaned back.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Damien studied him.

Richard's answer came too quickly.

"Interesting."

"What is?"

"Because I found a witness statement saying I was going to meet someone."

Richard went still.

"Who?"

"A woman."

Silence.

Damien watched every reaction.

"She was pregnant."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Damien, don't do this."

"Don't do what?"

"Dig up things that should remain buried."

There it was.

The confirmation Damien needed.

His uncle knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

"Why did you lie to me?"

Richard stood.

"You don't understand what you're asking."

"Then explain it."

"I can't."

"Or you won't?"

Richard looked at him.

"Both."

Damien rose.

"I'll find the truth with or without you."

As he turned to leave, Richard spoke.

"Then you'll destroy this family."

Damien stopped.

Without turning around, he replied:

"Maybe it deserves to be destroyed."

---

That evening, Elena sat beside Noah.

He was awake.

"Mama?"

"Yes?"

"Will Damien come tomorrow?"

Elena smiled faintly.

"I don't know."

"I hope he does."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because he makes you smile."

Her heart tightened.

She didn't realize she'd been smiling.

"Go to sleep."

Noah closed his eyes.

Elena remained beside him.

A few minutes later, her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then she saw the message.

Tomorrow's surgery will never happen if Damien learns the truth.

Her heart stopped.

A second message appeared.

Tell him to stay away.

Elena immediately looked toward the sleeping child.

Then toward the hospital door.

For the first time, she realized the threat was no longer hidden behind messages.

It was inside the hospital.

Watching them.

And tomorrow, Noah would be vulnerable.
