Chapter 8

Jaxon’s pov

Jaxon hadn’t been himself since Elena left.

He told himself he didn’t care—that she was just the daughter of an elder, that claiming her would be beneath him. But every time he closed his eyes, she was there. Her scent lingered in his sheets. Her laughter haunted his halls. His wolf growled with unrest, pacing inside him like a caged beast.

He wanted her.

Desperately.

But wanting her and claiming her were two very different things. He was the Alpha. She was a nobody. His betrothal to Nikki, the daughter of a powerful Alpha from the next territory, was already sealed. There was no room in his world for someone like Elena.

At least, that’s what he told himself.

Yet the ache in his chest refused to leave. And when she was gone—when she left without even saying goodbye—it only got worse. He felt empty. Incomplete. Like part of his soul had been ripped away.

That night, he confided in his best friend, Ryker.

“Claim her,” Ryker said, simply. “Screw the politics. Screw the titles. Claim her before it’s too late.”

Those words hit him hard. Maybe Ryker was right. Maybe it wasn’t too late.

The next morning, Jaxon rode straight to Elena’s family home.

But he was too late.

Her father opened the door, his face pale and hollow. “You came too late,” he said. “Elena… she’s gone.”

“What?” Jaxon whispered, heart racing.

“She had a sickness. Something came over her. We thought she was getting better but… she died last night.”

The world spun. Jaxon stumbled back a step.

“No… no, that’s not possible.” His voice cracked for the first time in years. “She can’t be—”

“She’s gone,” the elder repeated. “We didn’t have the time or means for a proper burial. She was… taken care of.”

Jaxon’s knees nearly buckled. For the first time since becoming Alpha, tears slid down his face.

This was his fault.

All of it.

If he had claimed her—if he had just followed his heart instead of hiding behind his title—maybe she would still be here. Maybe he could’ve saved her. But now… it was too late.

He returned to his pack house, broken.

His parents offered no comfort. “She was beneath you anyway,” his mother said coldly. “You have your betrothed. Focus on that.”

Two moons. In two moons, he would be wed to Nikki.

And yet he felt nothing.

That afternoon, while he sat in his office, drowning in paperwork he couldn’t focus on, Nikki barged in without knocking.

“You’re still thinking about her,” she said flatly.

He didn’t respond.

“She’s dead, Jaxon,” Nikki continued, stepping closer. “Let her go. You’re mine now. I can give you everything she couldn’t. After all, she was poor. Just an elder’s daughter. Not even fit to be Luna.”

He clenched his fists.

“You should be grateful, Alpha. I’m doing you a favor by standing beside you.”

That was it.

Jaxon stood, his power pulsing through the room like thunder. “You forget yourself, Nikki,” he growled. “You are betrothed to me—not my Luna yet. And you have no right to tell me what to feel.”

Nikki paled but held her ground. “I was just—”

“Enough.” His voice was a snarl now. “If you value your tongue, don’t speak her name again.”

As she turned to leave, her eyes caught something peeking from his desk drawer. She yanked it out.

A photograph.

Elena’s photograph.

Her eyes widened. “You kept this? You loved her?”

He snatched it back. “That’s none of your business.”

“She’s dead, Jaxon. Move on. You’re mine now. Accept it.”

“Get out,” he ordered, his voice dangerously calm.

“Fine,” she snapped, heading for the door. “But remember this—no one will take you from me. Not even a ghost.”

When she was gone, Jaxon sank into his chair, burying his face in his hands.

“Elena…” he whispered. “I’m sorry. I should’ve claimed you. I should’ve chosen you. I was a coward. I let fear and duty blind me.”

He clutched the photo to his chest, pain twisting inside him.

“But I don’t believe you’re dead. No. Something in me says you’re still out there. Hiding. Running. Maybe your family sent you away to protect you.”

He looked up at the ceiling, a fire reigniting in his eyes.

“I’m going to find you. Wherever you are, I will find you. And when I do—I swear, Elena—we’ll never be apart again.”

Elena’s POVThe moment I got home, I kicked the door shut behind me and leaned against it, trying to breathe. My chest rose and fell quickly, my body sticky with sweat. I didn’t even realize how tightly I’d been holding onto my bag until it slipped from my fingers and hit the floor with a soft thud.I felt like I had just run a marathon in a burning forest. The day had drained everything from me—my strength, my patience, my will to keep pretending that everything was okay.“Take it easy,” Elizabeth said as she closed the door behind me. “You look like you’re about to faint.”I didn’t answer. I just slowly peeled off the cardigan, then the white blouse underneath. My undershirt clung to my skin with damp patches. I felt dizzy again.“I’ll get you water.” Elizabeth disappeared into the kitchen.I sank into the couch and let my head fall back against the cushion. My pulse throbbed in my neck. My thoughts were a mess—tangled, confusing, loud. She returned quickly, pressing a cold glass in

Elena’s POVThe moment Amelia raised her hand, I flinched—expecting the sting, expecting the blow. My hand instinctively flew up to shield my face. But before anything could happen, a sharp voice cut through the tension like a blade.“What the hell are you doing?!”Elizabeth stormed out of the restroom, eyes blazing, her fists clenched at her sides. She stepped between us without hesitation, shielding me with her entire body.“Don’t you ever touch her,” she snapped, glaring at Amelia with such fire I barely recognized her. “You hear me? I don’t care how scary you think you are—back the hell off.”Amelia blinked, slightly thrown off by the sudden interruption.“You’re a bully,” Elizabeth continued, her voice rising. “We all know that. But guess what? You don’t just go around bullying people for breathing near your so-called boyfriend. And speaking of Rick—maybe you should go home and train your dog, because if he weren’t busy sniffing around every girl in school, none of this would be

Elena’s POVThe next morning, I felt sick again. It had become a routine. The waves of nausea hit me harder than before, especially in the mornings. Elizabeth helped me dress quickly. I wore my uniform—pressed skirt, white shirt, and black shoes—topped with the oversized cardigan we agreed on. It still smelled like her lavender perfume.“You good?” Elizabeth asked, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. Her eyes scanned my face, noticing how pale I looked.I nodded weakly, trying to smile. “As good as I can be.”She didn’t believe me. I saw it in her eyes. But she didn’t push. She just held my hand all the way to school.By the time we got to class, my stomach was already churning. I gripped the edge of the wall as we neared the door, trying to breathe through it.Elizabeth leaned close. “You want to sit for a while?”“No,” I whispered. “Let’s just go in.”As we reached the door, she excused herself. “Give me two minutes. I need the restroom—don’t move.”I nodded. She walked off.Th

Chapter 7Elena tried to focus on the clothes in front of her—rows of folded jeans and plain t-shirts—but her mind was a storm she couldn’t calm. The mall wasn’t much, just a modest one on the edge of the city, but it was more than her family could usually afford. They were average people. Not poor, but not rich either. Just enough to get by, to keep food on the table, and send her to school.Lisa, her aunt, watched her closely as they browsed. “Elena,” she said quietly, her voice low but firm. “I know something’s wrong.”Elena looked away, pretending to examine a jacket.“You may have lied to your father, but you can’t lie to me,” Lisa pressed. “Give me anything, Elena. Anything and everything. What happened during your stay with the Alpha?”Elena’s breath hitched. She felt like the air had suddenly turned too heavy to breathe. “Nothing happened,” she said, forcing a shrug. “I just… I need to get away. I want to be alone.”Lisa didn’t buy it. She tried again and again to pull the tru
