Mag-log inChapter 9
I didn't sleep the rest of the night. I sat on the edge of the bed, watching Julian’s chest rise and fall, my mind racing a million miles an hour. I couldn't save your father. The words echoed in my skull on a torturous loop. I had sold my soul to Victor, ruined an innocent man’s company, and nearly gotten the father of my child killed in a car bombing—all because I believed Julian Thorne was a murderer. But if Julian tried to save my father... then Victor had been lying to me since day one. By 7:00 AM, Julian was awake, his emotional slip from the night before firmly locked away behind his icy CEO exterior. He had a private doctor come to check his arm, kissed my forehead for the benefit of the maids, and locked himself in his home office at the end of the hall to deal with the fallout of my hack. I waited until 11:00 AM, when Marcus told me Julian was in a virtual board meeting that would take at least two hours. I slipped out of the master bedroom, my bare feet silent on the hardwood floor. I needed proof. I couldn't base my entire reality on a sentence mumbled in a drug-induced nightmare. If Julian was at the building the night my father died, he would have a record of it. He kept records of everything. I approached the heavy oak door of his home office. It was slightly ajar. I pushed it open and slipped inside. The office was empty, Julian’s laptop sitting open on his massive desk. He had gone to the kitchen for coffee. I rushed to the desk, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. I woke the computer up. The password screen flashed. I swallowed hard. Did he change it? My fingers flew across the keyboard, typing the 32-character alphanumeric code I had memorized three months ago. The very code he had caught me using on my first day. Click. The screen unlocked. He hadn't changed it. Why hadn't he changed it? I didn't have time to dwell on it. I opened his private, encrypted drive and typed my father's name into the search bar: Robert Vance. A single, hidden folder appeared. I double-clicked it, and my eyes rapidly scanned the documents that populated the screen. They weren't hostile takeover documents. They were bank wires. Julian had been secretly transferring hundreds of thousands of dollars into my father's failing company. He was funding him. Trying to keep him afloat. And then, I clicked on an audio file dated the night of my father's death. A tinny recording from a security camera played. "You can't pay him back, Robert! Victor is going to kill your daughters if you don't give him Thorne Industries' trade secrets!" It was Julian's voice, desperate, pleading. "I'm sorry, Julian," my father’s voice wept through the speakers. "Victor owns me. The only way to void his life insurance claim on me is if I die. Tell Elara I love her." "ROBERT, NO!" The sound of shattering glass. A scuffle. Then, silence. I clamped a hand over my mouth to muffle my sob. Tears streamed freely down my face. Julian didn't ruin my father. He was his only friend. And Victor... Victor was the monster all along. "I wondered how long it would take you to look." I whipped around. Julian was standing in the doorway, a mug of coffee in his good hand. He wasn't surprised to see me. He looked perfectly calm, though his eyes were heavy with a dark, weary sorrow. "Julian..." I sobbed, pointing at the screen. "You... you helped him. Why didn't you tell me? Why did you let me hate you? Why did you let me destroy your company for Victor?!" Julian walked slowly into the room, setting his mug on the desk. He reached out and gently wiped a tear from my cheek. "Because you wouldn't have believed me, Elara. You were so consumed by grief, you needed a villain. I let you make me the villain so you wouldn't go looking for the real one and get yourself killed." I stared at him, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he had sacrificed for me. For my family. "But you shouldn't have opened that file today, little hacker," Julian murmured, his gaze dropping to the computer screen. "Why?" I whispered. "Because that file is booby-trapped," Julian said, his voice hardening into steel. "The moment it was opened, it sent a ping to the external server my father built." Before I could ask what he meant, the deafening screech of the penthouse alarm system shattered the silence of the room. Red emergency lights began strobing from the ceiling. Julian grabbed my arm, pulling me hard against his chest as the sound of heavy boots echoed from the hallway outside. "Victor's mole inside my security team just got notified that we accessed the blackmail file," Julian said, pulling his gun from the holster at his waist. "And he’s in the penthouse."Chapter 15"Are you absolutely sure?" Marcus demanded, his hand dropping to his sidearm."I'm sure," I said, typing furiously on the bunker's terminal. Dr. Aris was shouting at me to get back in bed, but I ignored him. The baby was safe for now, but Lily was running out of time.My fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the bunker's internal firewalls to access the building's main network map."Sebastian used node 402 to mask the broadcast," I explained, the green code reflecting in my eyes. "Node 402 is tied to the sub-levels. He’s not in the penthouse. He’s not out in the city. He’s..."I hit ENTER, and a blueprint of the building flashed on the screen, a red dot blinking furiously."He's in the abandoned subway tunnels directly beneath Thorne Tower," I whispered. "It's the only place security cameras don't reach."Marcus cursed violently. He pulled out his radio. "Alpha team, this is Marcus. Abort the city sweep. The target is in the catacombs beneath the tower. I repeat, targ
Chapter 14The sub-basement bunker of Thorne Tower was a fortress buried sixty feet below Manhattan bedrock. It was cold, metallic, and completely cut off from the outside world.I lay on a plush bed in the center of the bunker, an IV dripping fluids into my arm. Dr. Aris sat in the corner, monitoring my vitals, while Marcus stood guard by the only door. But it wasn't Marcus I was staring at.Standing in the shadows of the bunker were four men I had never seen before. They wore bespoke Italian suits that cost more than my life, but they didn't look like businessmen. They moved like predators. They carried customized, suppressed weapons, and they watched the doors with the dead-eyed focus of professional killers. The mafia."Who are they?" I whispered to Marcus. Before Marcus could answer, the heavy titanium door unsealed with a hiss.A man walked in. He was older, perhaps in his late fifties, with silver hair at his temples and a perfectly trimmed beard. He radiated an aura of quiet,
Chapter 13"Stay with me. Elara, open your eyes! Look at me!"Julian’s voice sounded like it was coming from underwater. I was floating in a sea of agonizing, blinding pain. My lower body felt like it was being torn apart.I forced my heavy eyelids open. Julian was hovering over me, his face devoid of all color, his eyes wide with a terror so profound it shattered my heart. His hands covered in my blood pressed desperately against my pale cheeks."Julian," I whimpered, a fresh wave of agony making me arch off the cold steel floor. "It hurts. The baby...""You are not losing this baby," he ordered, though his voice cracked violently. "Do you hear me? I forbid it. You are not leaving me."He scooped me up into his arms, completely ignoring the torn stitches in his own shoulder. He laid me gently on the medical cot in the corner of the panic room."Marcus!" Julian roared, hitting the intercom button on the wall. "I need the medic at the vault door right now! I'm opening it!""Sir, the pe
Chapter 12"Don't touch her, Sebastian," Julian growled, climbing to his feet. He stepped in front of me, shielding me from the screen as if his brother could reach through the glass.Sebastian laughed. It was a cold, empty sound. He bore a striking resemblance to Julian—the same dark hair, the same aristocratic jawline—but where Julian’s eyes were the color of a stormy sea, Sebastian’s were pitch black."I have no interest in the crippled girl, Julian," Sebastian said smoothly, leaning back in his chair. "I am a businessman. I just want my throne back.""You lost the right to the company the day you faked your death to avoid federal indictment," Julian spat."Details," Sebastian waved a hand dismissively. "The feds have moved on. And now, thanks to your little wife's malware, Thorne Industries is bleeding out. The board is begging for a savior. I plan to step out of the shadows, heroically resurrect the company, and take my rightful place as CEO.""They will never elect you.""They w
Chapter 11"That's impossible," I stammered, staring at the screen. "Your brother died in a boating accident ten years ago. It was in all the papers.""He was supposed to be dead," Julian said, his voice hollow. He holstered his weapon, his jaw clenching so hard I thought his teeth might crack. He reached down, hauling Davis up by the collar of his shirt. Davis groaned in agony, clutching his bleeding knee."Marcus!" Julian yelled again. This time, the heavy footsteps in the hall belonged to Julian’s head of security. Marcus burst into the office, his gun drawn, bleeding from a nasty gash on his forehead."Sir, we were ambushed at the service elevator," Marcus panted, taking in the scene. His eyes locked on Davis, widening in betrayal. "They used gas. By the time my men came to, the east wing was compromised.""Throw this piece of trash in the holding cell downstairs," Julian ordered, shoving Davis toward Marcus. "Get the medic to patch him up. I want him alive. I'm going to personall
Chapter 10The penthouse alarm howled, a mechanical shriek that vibrated in my teeth. The strobe lights painted Julian’s face in flashing intervals of crimson and shadow. He didn't flinch. He shoved me behind his broad back, positioning himself between me and the open office door. His gun was raised, his stance wide, entirely ignoring the fact that his left arm was practically useless."Julian," I breathed, my hands clutching the back of his suit jacket. "Lily. We have to get to Lily.""Marcus!" Julian roared into the hallway. There was no answer. Just the heavy, rhythmic thud of footsteps approaching.Julian backed us up until my shoulders hit the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. "Don't move," he ordered, his voice dangerously low. "Don't even breathe."A silhouette appeared in the doorway, a gun raised with military precision. It wasn't a faceless goon. It was Davis. One of the two men Julian had explicitly ordered to guard my sister's room at the end of the hall."Drop it, Boss," Davi
