Chapter 1

Caleb marched over and shoved me into the prep area.

"Your wolf might be trash, but your arms and legs still work. If you can't even carry a tray, how will you survive doing Omega duties out on the border?"

I looked up. A banner hung right above him.

[May the Moon Goddess bless Chloe. The pride of our family. A bright future awaits.]

Caleb hung it up himself this morning. Every word was packed with his love for her.

I wanted to ask him something.

If I got into the Lycan Academy, would he hang a banner for me?

But before I could speak, my mother chimed in again.

"Harper, if anyone asks, lie. Tell them you work in the pack library. Do not mention the border camp. I can't afford the shame."

She had said this at least ten times. She was terrified my failure would ruin her image.

But she forgot the past. When Chloe first moved in, she saw me heal a dying pack member. Chloe immediately hugged my mom and bawled. "Harper is so amazing. Compared to her, I don't deserve to be in this family."

That night, Chloe pretended her wolf went feral.

She clawed her own arms. She made herself bleed.

My mother was the first to attack me.

"Chloe just lost her parents in the border war! Why did you use your healing powers to trigger her? Are you that vain?"

She smashed my beginner healing kit right in front of Chloe. My precious moon-dew and herbs were stomped into the mud.

I was only twelve. I crouched down. I picked up the pieces one by one.

I wanted to cry. But I understood her guilt.

Chloe's parents died fighting for our family.

So, to keep the peace, I became the dumb, useless screw-up.

I dug my nails into my palms. "Okay," I whispered.

My father nodded. He looked pleased.

"Your wolf is broken. But we'll still support you. I'll beg the pack elders. I'll get you an easy job clearing medical waste at the pack clinic."

My chest gave a painful throb.

Chloe's wolf was painfully average.

My parents worried she wouldn't get into any school.

So, they planned her path to an elite academy long ago.

They wanted her to network with the rich.

Back then, they said, "The border camp is too shameful. Even at her worst, Chloe needs an elite title."

"No need. I already got accepted into—"

"Let's take a group photo with Chloe before the guests arrive."

Julian's voice cut me off.

"Harper, you take the picture." He handed me the camera. His tone was pure Alpha command. No room for argument.

My parents flanked Chloe. Caleb and Julian stood right behind her.

A perfect family portrait. And once again, no room for me.

I swallowed hard and snapped the photo.

I handed the camera back to Julian. "Can we take one together?" I asked softly.

The Lycan Academy was over a thousand miles away. I wanted a picture of him to keep.

Julian paused. Then he scoffed.

"Aren't you going to the border camp? We'll see each other at pack meetings all the time. Don't be so dramatic."

But Chloe was moving to his city, too.

The last bit of hope I had for him completely died.

I glanced at my backpack. My acceptance letter was in there. I had wanted to tell him first.

Now, I was glad I kept my mouth shut.

Seven years later. On the podium at the Northern Alliance Summit, I accepted the silver scepter of the Chief Grand Healer.Thunderous applause erupted from the crowd.I became the youngest Chief Grand Healer in the history of the Lycan Council.I didn't just lead the development of a new wolfsbane antibody. I brought three dying werewolf packs back from the brink of extinction.Hundreds of Alpha elites and top healers bowed to me in deep respect.Alphas across all of the North submitted to my authority—exactly as I promised seven years ago.As for that pack in the North, they had long faded from my memory.Until one day, my assistant walked into my office with a call."Lady Harper, a man claiming to be your father says your mother is dying. He begs you to see her one last time."I didn't even look up. I kept working on my healing formula."Hang up.""But he said—""I said, hang up."My assistant did it immediately. But the phone kept ringing. Over and over again.I adjusted the glowin

After a brief silence, Caleb clenched his fists. With red eyes, he forced out a sentence:"I'm sorry! I was blind before. Can you please just talk to the Alpha and get our family's status back?"I scoffed, calling out their hypocrisy."You're only sorry because losing me cost you your privileges and pride. You don't feel guilty. If I was still a nobody today, you wouldn't even be here."Mother panicked and pulled his arm. "We came to apologize! Why are you yelling at your sister again?"I looked at their pathetic display and slowly shook my head.My eyes swept over my parents, then landed on a trembling Chloe."I will never forget the pain you caused me."Mother's legs gave out. She collapsed into Father's arms, her shoulders shaking as she cried."Harper, it's all my fault. When Chloe faked her feral shift, I was just so scared I lost my mind. That's why I treated you like that. It won't happen again...""Won't happen?" I sneered. "I'm never hiding my wolf for the sake of this family

Two months later, the academy liaison contacted me."Harper, some wolves claiming to be your family have been waiting outside the capital's core zone for three days and nights. They aren't allowed in, but they've been begging on their knees to see you."I set down the advanced wolfsbane sample I was studying and wiped my hands."Put them in a border reception room. Just this once."To cut ties for good, I decided to see them one last time.I was reborn in the Academy.I no longer suppressed my wolf. I stopped using pungent herbs to mask my scent. My healing gift was unleashed like a blazing silver fire, shining brightly in the academy. With incredible healing powers and six years of hidden theoretical knowledge, I quickly solved several complex wolfsbane cases. The High Council even made me the personal apprentice of the Head Mentor.I wore the silver laurel-embroidered robes of a senior healer. I had the best resources and total respect. As for the endless calls from Mother on differe

Father’s eyes were red. He made calls like a madman."I need to know where Harper is! I don't care what it takes!"He called old friends. Then business partners. Finally, he went to the Pack Enforcers.Sitting in the enforcers' office, Father listened to the captain's cold voice."Harper is in the capital now. She has the highest level of protection from the Lycan Council." The captain didn't even look at him. "Forget about your family. Even the entire pack has no right to interfere with her freedom."Mother cried and begged. "Please, just help us contact Harper. We just want to say we're sorry..."The captain scoffed. "Regretting it now? Too late."The news spread faster than a wildfire. In less than two hours, the entire Northern elite circle knew. Harper, the girl from a High-Beta family, was a top-tier healing prodigy specially recruited by the supreme Lycan Healer Academy.Back at their estate, the phone wouldn't stop ringing. The elites who used to suck up to them were now mockin

Dead silence filled the room.Caleb’s fork dropped onto his plate with a sharp clatter.Chloe stared at the speakerphone, her eyes wide with disbelief.Mother shot to her feet, her chair scraping harshly against the floor."Impossible! Harper can't even manage a half-shift!"Father stared at the phone in suspicion, his voice trembling. "Sir, is there a mistake? Harper's wolf is practically dormant. How could she..."A cold sneer came from the other end."A mistake? You foolish High-Betas. You treated a genius—one that top medical academies across the North are fighting for—like a cripple!"The official's fury was loud and clear. "I'm sending you the footage of Harper's Awakening test right now!"Father's phone pinged. He opened the video with shaking hands. Everyone crowded around. In the footage, Harper's wolf radiated a pure, holy silver light. It was so intense the camera could barely capture it.Her healing resonance and flawless scent control left the senior healers in the room ab

Chloe burst into terrified tears.Caleb was playing video games with his friends in the living room. He heard the noise and sprinted over.He shoved me away violently. He shielded Chloe on the floor."Chloe felt bad for Mom! She was just trying to help you clean! And you go crazy and try to choke her?!" Caleb roared."We spent all afternoon helping you. You don't even say thank you. Why are you bullying her?"Julian stepped up to defend her, too. He was still pale from the broken bond."What could possibly be important in your room? You're a cripple. You can't even feel your own wolf. Whatever was in that envelope was just trash!"He sneered. "You're just jealous Chloe got into an elite academy. You're using this as an excuse to go crazy."I stopped going to pack training just so Chloe wouldn't see me studying. I hung out with the lowest-ranking wolves to stay off her radar.Only at night did I dare to speak to my wolf. I practiced my healing energy in secret.I worked so hard for that
