Annora:

As soon as the awkward desert session was finished, the heirs left for the quarters in the palace that my father had arranged for them.

Chia was quick to leave without a goodbye or see you later.

I get to my bedroom, quickly ripping off the gown whose only purpose felt like it was to suffocate me, before grabbing my phone and texting Chia.

Me: We need to talk asap. What's up with you and Otto?

I watched the phone bubbles emerge and disappear several times. I sat on the bed for what felt like a century before I finally got a response.

Chia: Nothing. You're thinking too hard.

I scrunch my eyes together, rereading the two sentences that somehow took her ten minutes to send.

I start typing erratically and furiously.

Me: Are you serious? You were practically silent the entire time. Otto was staring at you like he wanted to fuck you or murder you, I couldn't tell which. Do you know him? What aren't you telling me?

Annora:"Wake up!" Krish's voice sings through my room before she rips the curtains open, blinding me with the early morning sun."It's the weekend!" I groan, pulling the pillow over my face. She doesn't have to wake me up, but it's something she often does anyway.I typically looked forward to our morning coffee and gossip sessions, but I was drained."Your date with Otto is in an hour," she reminds me.She jumps on my bed and rips the pillow from my face, showing me her big smile before raising an eyebrow."I saw you last night," she says, this time more quietly, as if someone might hear her."I don't know what you're talking about," I laugh. She shakes her head before grabbing my hands and dragging me out of bed.I mope over to the small table and chair on the other side of the room, where she has two cups of hot and delicious coffee, calling my name."Did you plan to meet with Sebastian? What did

Darin:I spent the entire dinner finding ways to watch her without being obvious."Darin, how are the courses going?" Ezra, Nora's father, asks politely. He was surprisingly down-to-earth, but I knew better.I knew the truth."It's going well. Surprisingly, the students are very adept and eager to learn. I have many bright minds in my classes, your daughter being the top of her class, of course," I say.I always bring her up casually to keep the façade going. He didn't know the truth, and I planned to keep it that way, but Nora's magnetizing aura made it challenging to stay on track. She was my enemy. I had to keep it that way, right?... right?"That's good to hear. I hope she is keeping to her studies and not getting involved in all the young drama," he responds, nodding and seeming to appreciate my comment. It wasn't a lie. Nora was brilliant. Likely a product of the one on one studies

Annora:Fae aren't like werewolves. We don't have singular destined mates. We have many different mates and it's not uncommon. Some of them are potential, like Darin and Otto. This typically means that they have traits that mesh well with ours, but it isn't a predestined connection.Hecate hadn't fated us together, but we possessed something strong that was undeniable. This could be friendship, alliances, or essentially someone you would get along with.Fae communities had more say over who they ended up with, well, everyone but me, I suppose.A genuine fated Fae connection was rare but not impossible.Typically, you don't feel it until you reach your full power, but I could feel this.I wasn't sure if he could, though. My guess was that he couldn't.While he looked at me with admiring eyes, they didn't speak the truth that I thought I would feel.I could feel this conn

Annora: The dining room table was less than intimate. It extended from one room to the other and comfortably accommodated over fifty people.Of course, Father sat at the head of the table, facing the room's entrance. The doors behind his seating area led to the royal kitchen.A kitchen so big, it might as well have been its own building. We employed and fed a lot of the community that wasn't able to support and provide for themselves so easily.Father was a softy at heart, even if he never showed it, I knew it was true.He did many things behind the scenes for the genuine good of our people that no one ever knew about. For him, it was never about the credit; it was about doing the right thing.Something I loved so dearly about him."Princess Annora Nightingale," the announcer states as he holds open the door, and I enter the room, taking one last deep breath before officially setting foot inside.I curtsy politely at the table of Fae men and women sitting there with their attention s

Annora:Deep breaths. That was Chia's wise advice for holding in my magic. Not much, but beggars can't be choosers."Your stepbrother is so hot, Nora. If only he weren't our professor!" El giggles and swoons. She joined us in my bedroom shortly after my horrid stepsister left. She must have passed by Darin on the way up to my room.Jealousy seeps in at the thought. My insides twist at her words. I shouldn't be possessive or have any claim to him.He wasn't mine.I still held hope that if he were my Fae mate, we could somehow be together. I knew that it would be my only chance at having the one that I loved."You can just call him Darin, you know?" I clear my throat and look away, hoping neither of them recognizes how uncomfortable that comment made me feel.I don't pay them any attention. I don't want to see the looks on their faces, and neither of them responds right away.Chia is embellished in a stunning floor-length dress that flows gracefully to the ground. The rich royal blue f
