Chapter 4

Author: Laughing Riot
Frederick was still the same man. Yet somehow, he didn't feel like himself anymore.

He was once a man so confident and full of fire, but he looked nothing like that tonight. As he faced Selena, he looked like a man troubled by love and weighed down with sorrow. He even seemed somewhat weary.

Selena poured him a glass of liquor.

Frederick had always come to her when something was on his mind, whether he was happy or troubled. Tonight, it was clear he was troubled.

After several stiff drinks, he finally looked at Selena and quietly asked, "How is your brother's injury?"

"It's better," Selena replied cooly, her face showing no emotion.

Frederick knew as well as she did that some wounds would never truly heal.

He gently took her hand in his. "Lena, please don't be angry with me. It was my fault that day. I shouldn't have been so harsh with you."

In truth, he had always treated her well over the years. He never got angry at her, and if he even spoke harshly to her, he'd immediately apologize. He also never used his status as a prince to lord over her, except for that one time three days ago.

Selena lowered her gaze and instinctively tried to pull her hand away, but Frederick held on tighter.

"Lena, please don't be mad. I don't understand why I've changed like this."

"Changed how?" Selena asked as she looked up at him.

His face was marked by pain and confusion, and he looked utterly lost.

But he was Frederick, Warbringer of Aurensia. He had faced countless battles and weathered every storm without ever showing a flicker of doubt. Even if the very mountains fell around him, he would remain unshaken.

When had he ever seemed so troubled before?

Suddenly, he said, "Lena, my heart belongs only to you. It always has, and it always will. There will be no change to our marriage plans. Next month, we wed. From that day forward, I will love no one but you."

If this had been the old Frederick speaking, Selena might have felt deeply moved. But as she recalled the murderous gleam in his eyes directed at her that day, she suddenly felt that whatever he said no longer held much meaning.

"Are you upset?" Frederick's voice grew heavier as Selena stayed calm and silent.

She raised an eyebrow and asked in confusion, "Why should I be happy? Isn't that the promise you made to me previously? Why must you say it again now?"

Was he really saying those words to her, or was he trying to remind himself in a different way?

This time, Frederick avoided her gaze. After loosening his grip on her hand, he picked up his glass and took a slow sip.

Selena was running out of patience. She still needed to tend to Sally and Sebastian. Seeing her impatience only made Frederick's frustration grow. She had never behaved like this toward him before.

"Lena, can I share what's on my mind with you? Are we still like we used to be?" he asked.

Why had he loved Selena for all these years? Because no matter what he went through, she never left his side. When he was punished for crossing the king, everyone else quickly turned to flatter his brother, the fourth prince. But Selena stayed loyal, always by his side.

She was Frederick's safe harbor. No matter the storms he faced, returning to her was the only thing that brought him peace. And now, he hoped he could still find that comfort with her.

"Lena, I think... I might have fallen for that wretched woman."

Selena appeared in front of Nathaniel about half an hour later. Seeing the blood at his feet, a dull ache began throbbing at her temple."Your Highness, you're wounded. Shouldn't you return to Obsidian Estate to see a physician?"He remained seated in her garden, letting the blood from his injuries stain the ground. She had waited for thirty minutes, hoping he would rise and leave of his own accord. Yet, he refused to move.If he were to bleed to death here, would the blame fall upon her family? Lately, misfortune seemed to arrive at the Duke of Blackmoor's household in endless succession, and she feared the next calamity might simply overwhelm them."Your Highness, shouldn't you hurry back to tend to your injuries?"There was blood everywhere. Wasn't he afraid of dying from blood loss?Nathaniel finally lifted his head and regarded her. Beneath the mask, she could clearly see that his face was pale as paper, clearly drained of blood."Your Highness, do you need me to have someo

Yuvan stood outside the window, speaking in a low voice, "My lady, something happened at the palace tonight. It seems Prince Elias was injured and had to be carried back inside."Selena's heart tightened. "Someone tried to assassinate him?"Elias currently resided in Concord Palace. Though it lay near the outer edge of the grounds, it was still very much within the palace walls. That someone could attack him there meant Aurensia couldn't escape blame.Yuvan continued, "The details are still unclear. I heard he was carried in from outside. Earlier, Mr. Walsh and the others pursued whoever was responsible. After nearly half an hour, they returned with Prince Elias.""Has His Majesty sent anyone to investigate?"Yuvan shook his head. "No."Selena frowned. "No?"It was such a serious matter. Why hadn't Wilfred sent someone to investigate?"On Prince Elias' side, no one has been held accountable. He claimed he was injured by accident and asked His Majesty not to make it public. Few

It was the Moonreaver!Nathaniel was actually holding that legendary blade in his hand! Renowned throughout the Northern Frontier, the weapon was said to weigh over a hundred pounds, forged from steel as black as night and gleaming with a deadly chill.Scouts had once reported from the battlefield, trembling as they spoke, that a single strike from the blade could sever the heads of dozens of soldiers at once. At the Northern Frontier, the very sight of it made the enemy flee in terror."He's holding the Moonreaver! It's really the Moonreaver!" Elias' eyes shone with a fierce excitement. "Damon, fetch my weapon immediately!"The audacity of that man, coming here with the Moonreaver!Elias had expected him to come, but not with such ferocity. The Dawnmerian prince could hardly contain himself. He had never seen the true power of the Moonreaver before. Clearly, Selena held an utterly unshakable position in Nathaniel's heart."Damon!" he called again.Damon's face turned pale with

No one, not even those closest to him, truly understood why Elias had proposed to Selena.Unable to contain her curiosity, Lilia asked, "Elias, did you know Lena before all this?"He shook his head.Lilia pressed on, "Then, why ask her to marry you? She looked positively terrified of you!""Lady Campbell is a true beauty. In all your years in Dawnmere, have you ever seen a woman fairer than she?" Elias gave a faint, almost amused smile. "A beautiful lady is a desirable match for any gentleman. Is it any wonder that I wish to marry her?"Lilia blinked in disbelief. "You're hardly the sort to chase after beauty. If you were, none of the women sent to you would have been returned untouched."Indeed, there had been no shortage of lovely young ladies paraded in front of Elias, each with their own charms. Some were full-figured, while others were slight and delicate. Regardless, he had never so much as glanced at them. So, Lilia couldn't help feeling that it was rather odd for her bro

"He's fond of your honesty and straightforwardness now, but you must be careful not to let him suspect that you have hidden motives. Right now, he treasures your innocence and candor above all else. Do not let the image he has of you be tarnished," said Mira. She narrowed her eyes and coldly added, "Sebastian and Selena destroyed our family. We'll settle that grudge, no matter what!"For now, they lacked the means to take revenge on their own. To achieve their goal, they would have to rely on Frederick's influence."But after we've taken our revenge, will I still be able to be with Frederick?" Freya asked softly.Mira frowned. "Have you truly fallen for him?"Freya lowered her gaze and said nothing."If he still cares for you, then becoming his princess consort could serve our cause, at least for restoring our family's honor. But if you are nothing more than an unnamed companion at his side, what influence would you have?" said Mira."Then, I shall make him marry me. I'll become

In the end, Freya was persuaded to return. But tonight felt different somehow. She let Frederick stay in her chambers."Frederick, I don't want to be apart from you tonight."Once she closed the door, she faced him and slowly removed each layer of her clothing.Frederick stiffened, heat rising to his cheeks. "Fey, didn't we agree that we'll wait until we're married?"As a prince, he could have given in, of course. How many men of royal or noble blood had women in their lives once they came of age? But having known Selena for many years, Frederick had grown accustomed to keeping himself disciplined and honorable around her.Perhaps Selena's character wasn't flawless, and she was always scheming in some way. But in this, her virtue was impeccable. She never let him touch her, and had made it clear that they must wait until their wedding day. Frederick's habit of keeping himself chaste had been instilled in him by her.Even with Freya, though he sometimes got so angry that he rippe
