Chapter 5

Author: Laughing Riot
"So, are you here to talk about breaking off our engagement?" Selena asked.

Her face remained calm and composed, but her fists slowly clenched tightly inside her sleeves. As her sharp nails dug into the flesh of her palms, there was a sting, but it barely compared to the ache in her heart.

Her troubled fiancé had come to her and confessed to having fallen for another woman, then expected her to comfort him as she usually would.

How strange the world could be.

How utterly cruel.

Selena's words about breaking off their engagement struck Frederick's heart with a deep and overwhelming pain.

"Impossible! How could I break our engagement? I will never leave you. Not in this lifetime!"

He grew agitated and gripped Selena's hand fiercely. This time, his hold was tighter and harder than ever before. Her nails were already pressing against her palms, and his actions drove them deep into her flesh. The pain was sharp, yet somehow, she hardly noticed.

She met Frederick's gaze with steady calm. "Then, tell me, what exactly did you come here to say tonight?"

"Lena, please don't be so cold to me. We've been through so much together. Are we really going to fall apart over something like this?"

Still holding her hand, he grabbed the bottle and drained half of it in one hard gulp, then slammed it down on the table. Pressing his fingertips to his forehead, he closed his eyes, his face twisted with pain.

"I don't know what's come over me. She's ugly, scrawny, small, and not even a fraction of your worth. But every night when I close my eyes, all I see are those eyes of hers. Bright and defiant. She looks at me with such boldness and arrogance, like she isn't the least bit afraid. That damn fool... she has no idea who she's messing with."

Though he was cursing Freya, the corners of his lips unconsciously curled into a smile. However, he didn't seem to realize he was smiling and still seemed as troubled as ever.

"Maybe she's different from any other woman I've known. She doesn't flatter me or try to win my favor. She never obeys me, and her rebellious streak makes me furious enough to want to kill her. Maybe that's why I can't stop thinking about her."

Frederick squeezed his eyes shut for a while before returning to his senses.

He opened them and gently said, "Lena, give me some time. I'll forget her, I promise. I swore I'd love only you in this life, and I meant every word. I'm a man of my word. Please believe me."

"Very well."

Selena said nothing more, quietly pulling her hand free. She looked at the man she had loved for so many years.

When she was just eight years old, he had saved her from a fire. From that day forward, she told herself she would marry no one else. He had only been twelve back then, but was already a young hero who was brave and full of confidence.

Selena had truly liked him.

To keep pace with him, she had spent her childhood mastering every skill she could. Not just music, painting, and poetry, but everything one might need on the battlefield. Though she had thrown herself into learning it all, she never showed off or boasted in his presence because he liked gentle women.

In his eyes, she had always been a delicate and refined young lady. She was graceful, well-mannered, tender, and almost fragile.

But now, he confessed he had fallen for a proud, headstrong young woman who made no effort to hide her spirit.

Selena stood up and looked down at the slightly drunk prince. Her voice was calm as she said, "Then, please be sure to rein in your thoughts once you return, Your Highness."

"I know you're still angry, but I meant every word I said." Frederick stood up, gazing at her stunning face bathed in moonlight. "Give me some time. I'll forget her, and you'll be the only one in my heart again. I will definitely fall in love with you again!"

"I never would have imagined that the daughter of a distinguished minister would dress in sheer silk just to... entice Prince Theodore. And she even did it in front of all those men?""Now that Prince Nathaniel mentions it, I think I've heard something similar. Before her marriage, Lady Jillian did keep pestering Prince Theodore, didn't she?""You actually saw her dance like that?""No, but if the Obsidian Monarch himself says it, who's to doubt him?""That's true. Prince Nathaniel's status is far too exalted for him to lie.""Lady Jillian is shameless, truly shameless."The whispers continued, low but persistent. No matter how quiet, enough of them reached Jillian's ears to make her blood boil."I didn't! I didn't! Prince Nathaniel is slandering me! I..." she shouted. But no one paid her any mind. Just as she had left Sebastian and Lilia with no chance to respond earlier, now no one would grant her an explanation."This is called using one's own tactics against them. When the

"What do you mean by that?"The words felt like a dagger to Jillian's heart.Back then, Theodore had indeed told her not to pester him anymore. When she kept trying, he even ordered someone to drive her away. She had considered going to her father and asking him to appeal to Wilfred for justice, but Theodore had threatened her, saying that if she dared involve the king, not a single person in her household would escape.Later, Theodore appeared at her door for no clear reason. He didn't do a thing, yet ended up lying beside her. By dawn, they were discovered. And so, it followed naturally that she became his princess consort. However, many of the spoiled young men in Theodore's circle knew the story of how he had previously abandoned her."Lady Campbell, you think—" Jillian turned, only to freeze completely.Beauty and beast! One like a fierce warrior, the other like an ethereal maiden. One inspiring fear, the other making young ladies seethe with envy!Jillian had spent so lon

The whispers weren't loud, but they carried clearly to Lilia's ears. Her face immediately flamed bright red. Theodore had always disliked his wife causing a scene, but seeing Sebastian and Lilia's embarrassment now gave him a small measure of satisfaction.Sebastian's expression darkened, his voice cold and measured as he said, "Princess Lilia is staying at Blackmoor Estate because—""Oh, Lord Campbell, you wouldn't dare suggest that you and Her Highness have no connection, would you? How cruel to say such a thing to Princess Lilia herself!" Jillian cut in, smiling brightly as she gave him no chance to explain himself to the crowd."Princess Lilia has devoted herself to you, even living at Blackmoor Estate for your sake. And now you say you have nothing to do with her? Are you going to abandon her after starting something?" she added.Sebastian's face flushed red from anger. "Mind your words, Your Highness! Princess Lilia and I—""Oh, enough of that. Even if you don't like Her Hig

The woman who spoke was not known to both Lilia and Sebastian, though she seemed vaguely familiar. However, they knew the man walking beside her all too well, and with no small measure of disdain."Greetings, Prince Theodore," Sebastian said as he bowed.Lilia only cast a brief glance at him before turning away. She was a princess of Dawnmere. No one decreed that a Dawnmerian princess must curtsy to a prince of Aurensia. The woman with Theodore was dressed in fine silks, her makeup striking. She was undeniably beautiful, but her look was more showy than refined, leaning toward gaudy.Sebastian finally placed her. This was Theodore's new princess consort, whom he had only recently married. Her name was Jillian, the daughter of a high-ranking minister. She had once been the subject of scandal when Theodore allegedly barged into her chambers late one night.Their wedding had been rushed, completed in just three days. Wilfred had clearly not been pleased, but had to grant the decree f

Nathaniel hadn't spoken a single word for quite some time. From the moment he first saw Selena until they climbed into the carriage together, he'd remained utterly silent. As the carriage moved slowly toward the palace, not once did he break the stillness between them.Beneath his cold mask, his eyes held a depth no one could read.Selena tried to puzzle him out, even wondering if perhaps her attire had displeased him. She opened her mouth several times, intending to ask, but each time, he simply stared at her without a word.He looked at her, but his thoughts seemed elsewhere entirely. It left her without the urge to speak. What on earth was he thinking?Suddenly, the carriage came to a halt.Liam, seated in front, cautiously announced, "Your Highness, we've arrived at the palace."Nathaniel snapped out of his reverie and abruptly said, "Return to the estate.""What?"Liam and Cloud weren't the only ones who froze at his command. Even Selena, sitting opposite him, was momentar

As night fell, the Royal Garden was instantly transformed into an impressive spectacle of brightly glowing lanterns and flowers in full bloom. Her mistress was breathtaking tonight! That regal, confident beauty, combined with her striking presence, made it seem as if the world revolved around her alone.Even though Lilia couldn't see, she could almost feel the breathtaking presence around Selena.
