Chapter 6

Author: Laughing Riot
Selena said nothing and simply looked at Frederick with a faint, knowing smile.

He felt a flicker of disappointment. He had expected her to offer at least a few words of comfort to ease the weight on his heart. After all, he had always been honest and open, never hiding his true feelings from her.

Men were often fickle, and Frederick believed he had behaved better than any man under the sun.

Still, she wouldn't stay angry for long. Frederick knew Selena was kind and forgiving. Once she had time to think it through, she would eventually forgive him, regardless of what he had done.

"Cheer up. We'll get through this. Just wait for me," he said, forcing a smile before leaving.

When his figure disappeared beyond the garden gate, the faint smile on Selena's lips faded slowly. She turned and walked toward Sally's room. When she entered, she saw Sally sitting on the bed, wiping away tears.

Selena's eyes flickered with concern as she hurried over. "What's wrong? Are you still in pain?"

Sally shook her head but looked at Selena with tear-filled eyes. "My lady, I heard everything earlier. His Highness is too much! How could he treat you that way?"

Sally had sensed something was wrong between them the moment she heard Freya call Frederick scum. She had noticed how he didn't react as most would, as if he had grown used to being addressed that way.

Not even Selena had ever dared speak to him so boldly. It was clear how much Frederick doted on Freya.

"My lady, do you really believe he will change his mind?"

Selena stared out the window, her eyes calm and unreadable. "Whether he forgets Freya or not is no longer my concern."

Sally looked surprised. "My lady..."

"No one wants to stay in one place, hoping someone will occasionally look back at them. Since he has already walked away from the world we shared, all I can do is keep moving forward," Selena added.

Nine years of love couldn't be wiped away in a day. But once something was broken, it didn't matter how much one tried to fix or protect it. It would never be the same as before.

The old saying was right—some things just couldn't be fully repaired.

"Focus on getting well. We're going back to the capital soon." Selena stood and headed for the door. "I'll go check on my brother first."

Sally wanted to say more, but in the end, she just quietly watched Selena's graceful back and held her tongue.

Everyone thought Selena was fragile and gentle, someone who could be shaped and molded at will. But only Sally truly knew how strong she was.

When news came that Thomas and his wife, Lara Smith, had fallen in battle, Gideon fell ill and Sebastian fainted. It was the seemingly most fragile woman who single-handedly arranged all the funeral rites for her parents.

She seemed fragile, but everyone depended on her the most. Otherwise, Frederick wouldn't go to her for comfort every time he was wronged. He just didn't realize it himself!

After that day, Selena stayed with Sally and Sebastian, personally caring for both of them. Seeing that she neither cried nor caused a scene, Frederick assumed she had accepted the situation with Freya. With that, he felt somewhat at ease.

For seven days, they didn't see each other.

On the seventh day, the army finished its preparations and was ready to depart for the capital. A recovered but still weak Sebastian was leading the soldiers at the front, leaving Sally as the only one standing by Selena's side.

When they first arrived here, Frederick had been with Selena. They laughed together and were the picture of ease and happiness, drawing the envy of everyone around. But now, as they prepared to leave, the person next to the prince was someone else entirely.

Sally couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. In contrast, Selena remained calm and composed, as if nothing had happened.

By midmorning, the army had been waiting for some time, but Frederick hadn't arrived. The soldiers waited another hour before the prince's carriage finally appeared in the distance, slowly making its way to the city gate.

Though the man himself had yet to arrive, the shouting could already be heard clearly by everyone nearby.

"You're already engaged to her, so why bring me to the capital? Do you think I'm like her? That I'd sacrifice my dignity for fame and status? I'm not and I won't. I will never share a man with another woman. If you can't promise to love only me for the rest of your life, then don't bother. Now, get out of here!"

Tears welled in Freya's eyes. She knew Frederick wouldn't spare her even a glance again, and her heart went cold as she passed him. William walked beside her, ready to escort her away.Suddenly, a flash of silver cut through the air. William sensed it at once, but it was already too late. The hidden weapon was aimed at Frederick."Your Highness, look out!" William shouted. The prince's mind was tangled with too many thoughts. Whether it was rage or distraction, he failed to notice the danger at first. By the time he sensed something amiss, the weapon was already dangerously close."Your Highness!"William couldn't strike it down in time. He turned and lunged toward Frederick, intending to shield him with his own body. But someone else moved even faster."Fred!"Freya's cry had barely left her lips when she was already in front of him. With a sickening thud, the hidden weapon struck her squarely in the back, sinking deep."Guards! Protect the prince!" William barked. The guard

"I know her secret. The one she truly loves is the Obsidian Monarch. Back then, she even meant to go and seduce him. But he refused to see her, so she never had the chance," Freya said. When she saw the change in Frederick's face, she knew she had struck at what he hated most."Fred, I'm not trying to slander her behind her back. I'm only afraid you're being deceived. It doesn't matter if what lies between you is only a bargain or something more. If her heart belongs to the Obsidian Monarch, then no matter what happens in the future, she will betray you at any time and follow him without hesitation.""Nonsense!" Frederick glared at her. "Because I don't want you, you now mean to stand in the way of me and any woman I choose?"Freya bit her lip. She knew that no matter what else she said, he wouldn't even look at her the way he used to.At last, she carefully drew a letter from her sleeve and stepped toward him. "Fred, this is something I obtained from Mira before she left Hawthorn

The woman in the room was Freya.Frederick had once ordered her thrown into the dungeon, though that punishment had been born of anger more than anything else. He wasn't a particularly kind man, but had always been too soft-hearted for his own good. When word reached him that Freya had fallen gravely ill only a few days later, he relented. He released her and confined her to a small courtyard instead. He never expected that on the very eve of his wedding to Mira, Freya would secretly slip out and hide herself in his bedchamber. In truth, Frederick hadn't seen her in a long while. More than two months had passed. Seeing her now, he almost failed to recognize her.She was painfully thin and utterly worn down. She should have been in the bloom of her youth, yet looked like a woman twice her age. Her once passable face was lined with fine wrinkles, dulled by exhaustion and despair."Fred."Freya's voice was hoarse. They hadn't seen each other for a long time, and the moment they met

Cloud assumed that once Nathaniel found Oliver, the night would end in flying fists and chaos. But though he lingered outside for quite some time and watched in secret, he heard nothing at all.The physician's tonic for bruises was finally ready. Though Cloud was reluctant in every way, he forced himself to carry it to Nova Pavilion for Nathaniel's sake. To his utter surprise, the brothers weren't sparring in the rear courtyard at all. They were in a room with their heads bent together, fussing over something he couldn't quite see.Cloud paused outside the door and listened. Soon enough, their voices drifted out."She's a witch, so she must like bold colors like deep purples and bright reds. I think this shade's quite good.""She's not a witch. Remember to address her properly in the future. Also, you're not to upset her.""Even if she'll be my sister-in-law, she's still a witch... Alright, fine. I'll address her properly."Oliver's reluctance was plain enough that even Cloud cou

Tomorrow would be the wedding day for three couples. Tonight was bound to be a sleepless one.And it wasn't only those at Blackmoor Estate who lay awake. Liam and Cloud were wide-eyed too, for a far crueler reason. In the dead of night, Nathaniel had dragged them straight out of their warm beds to practice combat. It was a horror beyond words, dreadful enough to make a man give up on life itself. Why were they forced to train in the middle of the night during the dead of winter? And the worst part was Nathaniel only seemed to grow more energized with each strike. Every punch landed solidly, hitting Cloud and Liam so hard that one howled in pain while the other gritted his teeth, barely holding back groans from what felt like internal injuries.Seeing a fist flying straight toward his face, Cloud finally screamed, "Your Highness, not my face! I must accompany you to pick up your bride tomorrow—"The punch never struck his face, landing squarely on his shoulder instead. He rolled ac

When Sebastian was returning to his courtyard, he didn't know why, but his steps carried him straight to the courtyard where Lilia was temporarily staying. The little courtyard didn't have a name yet. When she first arrived, she had stayed in Lustre Pavilion. Later, once Lilia's emotions had settled a little, Sebastian had Sally prepare a small courtyard for her to stay in temporarily.Though meant as a temporary arrangement, Sally had made it tidy and comfortable. The courtyard was small but clean and serene, perfect for rest and recovery.Later, Sebastian and Lilia had been officially betrothed. Selena said that even though the princess would move into Lustre Pavilion after the wedding, there was no need to get rid of the temporary residence. If the couple ever had a quarrel, Lilia could always retreat here for a few days. Those few days would give Sebastian a bit of time to coax his wife back into good spirits. As he stood in front of the courtyard, Sebastian's mood was complic
