Chapter 4: Scent

Sharmaine lay on her bed, her black hair framing her beautiful face. Augustus opened the door to enter, Sharmaine did not feel his presence so she still slept quietly. He saw Sharmaine, gently showing a warm smile. Augustus laid his pillow on the couch opposite Sharmaine, quickly falling asleep.

Sharmaine woke up, she looked around at the surroundings. Last night Sharmaine had a safe and warm sleep like never before. Looking at the clock on the table, it is 9 am, today is Sunday, Sharmaine will sleep until noon but how can she forget, there is an eight-year-old boy in the house now.

Augustus sat watching TV attentively, he got up at 6 a.m., through the knowledge he received from television in three hours. Augustus partially understood the life around him.

"Good morning." Sharmaine said, she went to the table to get a piece of bread and put it in the oven.

"Good morning." Augustus replied.

"Why do you wake up so early, you can't sleep?" Sharmaine was curious, normally children would sleep a lot, moreover, Augustus was tired.

He looked at Sharmaine: “I want to wake up early to learn more about this world.”

“So, what did you find out?” Sharmaine laughed, she mischievously looked at Augustus.

"I know a lot, don't worry." Augustus joked.

“Sounds interesting, tell me.” Sharmaine took the bread and walked over to where Augustus sat down.

He leaned over, his small lips touching Sharmaine's cheek: "Meaning, I like being around you."

Sharmaine widened her eyes at Augustus: "You?"

"What's wrong, I just watched TV and saw everyone doing that." Augustus is honest.

"Nothing. Get ready, we'll be out soon." Sharmaine touched her cheek.

--

Sharmaine and Augustus walked together under the trees, both smiling. Hand in hand, Augustus sometimes sneaked a glance at Sharmaine, even though he was only an eight-year-old boy, Augustus' feelings were somewhat mature. When he took Sharmaine's soft hand, he wanted to hold her hand like that forever, not wanting to let go.

The guy in the T-shirt came from nowhere, he smiled at Sharmaine. Whenever he saw her, he was always in a handsome and warm figure.

"Sharmaine, where are you going?" Kenvil went out for a walk and unexpectedly had a chance to meet Sharmaine.

Sharmaine bowed: "Hello, brother."

"Meeting you like this is our destiny." Kenvil scratched his head, he always wanted to be with Sharmaine.

Augustus suddenly felt unhappy, his Sharmaine was suddenly attracted by a man from nowhere. He does not like this.

"Kenvil, I'm not someone who likes saying things like this." Sharmaine quickly created distance between the two, Sharmaine knew when to stop his relationship with everyone.

Kenvil smiled sheepishly: "You always make people speechless."

“This boy, who is that?” Kenvil turned his attention to Augustus, a boy he had never seen before, seeing Sharmaine holding the boy's hand, Kenvil guessed that this boy was a distant relative of Sharmaine's visiting.

Augustus gave him an unfriendly look: "I'm the one on Sharmaine's side." A never ending sentence surprised Sharmaine and Kevin.

Sharmaine sensed that Augustus was unhappy, so she took his hand, the warmth making Augustus' heart tender again.

"Sorry, I'm busy today." After Sharmaine said that, she took Augustus's hand and walked away, ignoring Kenvil's confusion.

The two walked together, without a sound, without a word. Between Sharmaine and Augustus was an empty space. Augustus looked at Sharmaine's back, he only knew, he didn't want any man to appear beside Sharmaine. From the moment Sharmaine appeared, he wanted to monopolize her as his own.

"Sharmaine." Augustus stops.

"What's wrong?" Sharmaine turned to look at the eight-year-old boy.

"Or you should wait for me to grow up, I will definitely protect you." Augustus didn't want Sharmaine to smile and talk to other men.

Sharmaine looked at the young boy, she smiled: "Let me buy you ice cream, children love to eat ice cream."

She didn't want to hear inappropriate words from Augustus. He's just a child.

Augustus did not have time to say another word, he looked in the direction Sharmaine had left, his eyes flickering thoughtfully. He feels, he is not a child, this body is what binds Augustus.

Sharmaine received the ice cream from the vendor, she quickly crossed the street, running to Augustus. To him, Sharmaine always smiled brightly like the sun. Augustus looked stupid. For a moment, he wanted to capture that pretty smile.

The overhead concrete in the building next to the ice cream shop under construction suddenly fell down. Sharmaine raised her head, in that moment, Sharmaine was unable to speak or do anything else.

An arm wrapped around Sharmaine, the small body rushed like lightning to protect Sharmaine. The piece of concrete fell, hitting Augustus hard.

Surrounded by people screaming. Sharmaine looked at Augustus, she didn't think much of it, quickly hugged Augustus and left. The fact that a person can stop the concrete slab is too mysterious, she does not want Augustus to reveal his identity, she will protect Augustus.

“Why did you run out, what if you get hurt?” Sharmaine spoke up while walking.

Augustus fell on her shoulder: “I'd rather suffer than see you hurt. You're just a normal person, I'm not like you."

"What if you die?"

“It has nothing to do with my wanting to protect you.” Augustus spoke up.

Sharmaine's white neck appeared in Augustus' line of sight. Hunger and craving appear. The taste of blood, this is exactly what he was looking for.

“You are delicious.”

Sharmaine didn't stop Augustus, she let him suck blood from her neck. The moment Augustus ran to protect Sharmaine from the concrete, Sharmaine's heart was filled with fear, she was afraid he would disappear from her again. Sharmaine found Augustus to protect him, to be with Augustus again.

Although his time with Augustus was limited, Sharmaine still did not want to give up that opportunity. She had loved him and known him for a long time, but he had forgotten about Sharmaine.

Augustus was infatuated with the taste of Sharmaine's blood, he had never tasted such fine taste, the smell of blood was so passionate, so sweet, any vampire would want to taste this sweet, beautiful blood. Augustus's eyes turned red, his fangs grew, blood from Sharmaine's neck seeped down her skirt. Augustus indulged in enjoyment, his mind was only blood, blood and blood at the moment.

Sharmaine couldn't bear to push Augustus away, she looked up at the sky, suddenly smiling. Is this death the deliverance that Sharmaine still seeks?

Augustus in ecstasy and enjoyment, he saw the girl in a white dress with black hair slowly walking towards him. She smiled at him, holding a dark umbrella in her hand. She leaned over to cover for Augustus, Sharmaine's hand touching Augustus' eyes. At that moment, he took her hand, he could never forget this beautiful and pure girl in this life.

"Why don't you stop me?" Augustus raised his head, he looked at Sharmaine's pale face from anemia.

On Augustus' mouth was still Sharmaine's blood. She raised her hand and gently wiped the remaining blood from Augustus' mouth.

"Since you saved me, I don't want to push you away." Sharmaine was honest, she didn't want to push him away from her. Even at the cost of her life, Sharmaine didn't want to do that.

Sharmaine's hand touched Augustus' cheek, his face turned pitiful, Augustus slowly rested his face on Sharmaine's hand.

"But I almost killed you. I'm not human. You know that right?" Augustus soon realized that unlike Sharmaine, he was of a different race.

"You are the one I want to protect, I will and will always protect you." Sharmaine looked at Augustus, she had always hoped.

Augustus licked Sharmaine's finger: "I will protect you, I won't let anyone hurt you, the only one who has the right to hurt you is me."

He had only met Sharmaine less than two days, but Augustus always felt that he had known Sharmaine for a long time. The warm and sincere feeling that Sharmaine gave him, Augustus always kept in his heart. He was not human, he understood that this young body was not his.

Sharmaine retracted her hand, she touched Augustus' hair: "If I hurt you, will you forgive me?"

Augustus did not understand Sharmaine's words: "Why did you have to hurt me, you saved me and gave me a place to return to. If you wanted to harm me, you would not have saved me."

Sharmaine smiled, she kissed Augustus's hand: "If that day comes, it's okay for you to hate me, because I'm worthy of your hate. No matter how you treat me, I'm still committed to volunteering."

Augustus said firmly: "There is no such thing as hating, I will not hate you, I will protect you."
