Chapter 1

At seven o'clock sharp, Andrew Cathcart came home.

The very first thing out of his mouth was a question for me.

"I saw the hospital charge came to 650 dollars, but I only sent you 300 dollars. Where did the rest come from?"

He looked over at me as he shrugged off his coat.

"I borrowed it from a friend."

"I knew it. You couldn't control yourself again."

"But that wasn't overspending," I said softly. "It was to spare my mother some of the pain."

"And I already told you it wasn't necessary." He frowned slightly. "Elena, being a good daughter isn't an excuse for everything.

"Today you're worried about sparing your mom this. Tomorrow, you'll want her to enjoy that. Before you know it, the money's pouring out like water."

I didn't answer him.

I only stared at the suit jacket he'd hung up, where the corner of a receipt peeked out of the pocket.

"I was planning to give you a gift, but now I'm returning it. Consider it payback for the extra money you spent today. Don't let it happen again."

He dangled a small metal bag charm in front of me.

Before he could put it away, he heard me say, "That's the free gift for spending over 100,000 dollars on handbags in-store. You're very generous with her."

Andrew's hand froze.

"You saw that?"

His expression stayed perfectly natural. "That's a reward I promised her a while back.

"The project she assisted on bumped the company's marketing numbers up ten percent in the third quarter.

"She earned it. Rewards are based on individual value.

"And you? You're a housewife. Instead of caring about the chores you're supposed to be doing, you spend every day keeping tabs on what freebies some luxury brand hands out?"

He pressed his lips together and looked me over, disappointed. "After all these years, you still haven't settled down?"

Something inside me suddenly let go.

I had given up my career to become a wife "wholeheartedly" devoted to running the household because Andrew himself had once told me, "I'll take care of you. I don't want you working so hard."

And after three years of living that out without a single complaint or regret, he had the gall to call me worthless and undeserving of anything.

I stood up, went back to the bedroom, and took out the document.

"Sign it."

I pushed it in front of Andrew.

It was a divorce agreement.

Andrew read only the first few words of the title before turning his head away with a helpless sigh.

"What's gotten into you today?"

He tossed the document aside like trash. "The thing with Sasha and the thing with your mom. I believe I've already explained both of them. Elena, what exactly are you trying to pick a fight about?"

I opened my mouth, but before I could make a sound, a phone call cut me off. Andrew answered it.

"Not just my floor. Replace them on every floor."

He lowered his voice and spoke into the phone. "Sasha says the old brand of tissues feels too rough. It hurts her hands. Just do what she says. You don't need to run it by me anymore."

He put the phone down.

I looked him straight in the eye. "She thinks a tissue feels uncomfortable, so you'll replace every single one for her.

"But my mother is fifty years old. They're going to push a tube that long down into her stomach, and you say general anesthesia isn't necessary."

Andrew froze, and his breathing turned impatient again.

"I told you, didn't I? Your mom grew up in the countryside. She can handle a little pain like that just fine."

Countless memories suddenly flooded my mind.

When Mom's phone broke, he dug a secondhand one out of a scrapyard for her, saying she'd never get used to anything high-end anyway.

On her birthday, he bought the cheapest muffin from the corner store and stuck a candle in it, saying old people didn't care about things like that.

It was true that Mom could put up with a lot, all to keep the peace between Andrew and me.

But I didn't want to put up with it anymore.

"Sign it."

I handed him the document again.

He turned around and left, slamming the door hard behind him.

An hour later, the power went out in the mansion, and a text from Andrew came through.

Andrew: [Put that nonsense away, and I'll send you money for the electric bill.]

I sat in the dark, and the corners of my mouth tugged into a self-mocking smile.

Then I made a phone call.

"Start the process to transfer my nominee-held shares back to me.

"That money... I want it back."

When Mom and I walked in, he was sitting in front of a wooden cabinet, staring blankly at an alarm clock on top of it. "Is this where this clock goes..."Mom and I looked around, exchanged a glance, and said nothing.Andrew was restoring the house to the way it used to be.The way it had looked right after my father passed away, before Sasha's parents moved in."Elena!"Hearing us behind him, Andrew all but leaped up from the floor. "You're back! I knew you'd come back!"I'm already restoring your dad's house. Just wait for me. I'll make it exactly the way it used to be, I swear!"As if possessed, he knelt on one knee in front of me, his voice hoarse. "As for the paintings Sasha's parents ruined, I've hired famous artists to recreate every single one, exactly as they were."Elena, let's start over, okay?"The room fell completely silent.I gently brushed away the hand touching the hem of my clothes."Andrew, happy endings where broken things get pieced back together aren't f

Andrew had never once considered that question. He stood rooted to the spot as everything around him blurred, as if he'd been swallowed by a thick fog.How was that possible? His gaze landed on the woman in front of him.Hadn't I long since been kept under his thumb, turned into a housewife who knew nothing of the world outside her own home?"I quit my job because of you."My expression didn't change. "I was ready to let everything go. To stay quietly by your side and help you take care of our home."All those years, whenever Andrew ran into trouble with his accounts or finances, I had quietly helped him out behind the scenes.Until the hole kept getting bigger, and his greed kept growing deeper.Ending up where he was now was entirely his own doing."You were too arrogant. Did you think that just because I bowed my head once, you could keep me under your foot forever? From the moment you trampled all over my bottom line, I never had any intention of letting you off."Andrew

Andrew had tracked down the hospital where Mom was having her surgery.Mom was still asleep. I stepped out of her room and faced him."How are you a shareholder in Chelston Holdings?"What is Yolanda Cohen to you? Why would you have her hold your shares for you?"Why didn't you ever tell me any of this?"Andrew fired the questions at me frantically.Watching how agitated he was, I found the whole thing laughable."Because one of Chelston's shareholders used to be my uncle."He had no children. I took care of him in his old age and saw him through to the end, and afterward, he gave his shares to me of his own accord."The person holding those shares on my behalf is my friend, Yolanda."She and I have been through life and death together. I chose to let her manage my stake, and I've only now taken it all back."As for why I kept it from you..."I watched his face grow paler by the second and let the corners of my mouth curve slightly. "Andrew, you hid even a bank card's PIN f

"What's going on?"The venue fell silent for a moment, then erupted into an uproar."Look, what's that on the screen? Copyright registration certificates?""So Sasha didn't paint these? Was she lying just now?"Sasha stood on stage, her face deathly pale, staring at the screen in disbelief. She had never imagined those old paintings had all been registered with the Copyright Office. But Andrew had told her they were just things his father-in-law had dashed off, and that it would be fine to use them to pave her way!"Mr. Cathcart, I..."She turned toward Andrew, only to find he wasn't even looking at her. He had already turned and was hurrying toward the exit.At the same time, the doors to the venue swung open."Ms. Reyes, you are suspected of unlawfully seizing another person's property and of inciting others to commit a crime. You are hereby summoned for questioning in accordance with the law. Come with us.""No, I didn't do anything! You have no right to arrest me!"Sash

When I rushed over to my mom's place, I found her clinging desperately to a man's leg and crying out, "These are Elena's things! You can't throw them away!""Get off me!"The man jerked his foot and kicked her straight into the corner."Mom!"My eyes burning with rage, I rushed forward and found Mom clutching her stomach in agony, moaning without end.And sitting in the middle of the living room, of all people, was Sasha. She was the one who'd called in the thugs who were clearing out the house."Mrs. Cathcart, my little brother is starting high school next semester, and he doesn't want to board at school. So Mr. Cathcart said he'd rent your mom's house to us for now."She set a bank card down on the table. "Here's three years' rent. I really did want to talk things over nicely with your mom, but she flat-out refused. So I had no choice but to call some people in."She covered her mouth and laughed, her face full of smug satisfaction. It wasn't until half an hour after I'd

It was Sasha's parents. The house my father, Arthur Banks, had left me had been transferred to a pair of strangers without my knowledge, and without them paying a single cent.Blood rushed to my head. I charged inside and threw open the study door. That room used to hold my father's paintings. There had been more than a hundred of them. Now the room was bare."Where are the paintings?""What paintings? I don't know. We threw them out ages ago."Sasha's mother, Rhonda Reyes, refused to meet my eyes. "Who are you, anyway? I'm calling the police!""Elena, what are you doing here?"At the same moment, Andrew's voice rang out from the doorway, and I watched him stride in."I came to my own house. Andrew, why was my house transferred to them?"I didn't even need to ask who had done it.It could only be the man in front of me, the man who had shared my bed for three years and knew almost everything about my background."Because Sasha's parents are getting on in years, and she wan
