Kamara

“No. This was a setup.”

My heart stuttered. “What do you mean setup?”

He ignored, moving quietly through the dark and around the stacked crates.

“Jace.” I repeated.“What do you mean setup?”

He finally looked at me. “They set me up. There’s nothing happening in the warehouse.”

He said more to himself than to me.

My mind was too much of a mess, hands trembling to even care to understand what he meant. I didn’t want anything to do with my fathers business. It was the one ‘stay away’ rule I obeyed.

“So, what do we do now?” I asked.

He turned to the opposite direction, the one by the door, searching for God Knows what.

“We wait.”

I blinked. “Wait? You’re serious?”

He checked his watch, then his phone. “The door was shut from the outside. Backup should be here first thing in the morning.”

“By tomorrow?” I stay dead at him. “There’s no way in hell I am going to stay here till tomorrow? I have school!”

He ignored my rant, going back to his phone to try again if he could pick up another signal.

I paced, dragging a hand through my face.. “Why would someone want to lock us in here? What type of enemies have my father gathered this time?”

I stopped my pacing, walking to him till I stood blocking his path.

“Do something. Call my father, it’s what you are good at, I can’t stay here.”

“With you shouting this much, I doubt even I can.”

I blinked, stunned at his comment. Since when did Jace respond to me?

I continued regardless. “What am i supposed to do? You dragged me to a part first and then get me locked up in some serial-killer-looking warehouse, and I’m supposed to just sit quietly?”

He didn’t bother responding this time. He just walked toward a stack of crates, gun still in his hand. The dim light caught the side of his face, the hard lines that never seemed to soften.

I exhaled hard, pacing. “This is insane. You can’t just—”

“Sit down, Kamara.”

His voice was low, but the kind that cut through air. My mouth shut instantly.

I hated that it worked.

He crouched near one of the sacks, brushed the dust off, and muttered, “Still sealed.”

“What’s in them?”

He gave me a look. “You don’t want to know.”

He stood, checking the shadows again. The silence between us felt heavy. Every sound — the hum of the lights, the creak of metal — echoed too loud.

I hugged myself, glancing around. “Do you ever get scared?”

He didn’t look at me. “No.”

I scoffed. “Right. Forgot. You’re allergic to feelings.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw, the only sign he’d even heard me.

Minutes dragged. The light flickered again. Somewhere above us, something creaked then a bucket fell.

I flinched. “That was the wind, right?”

He didn’t answer. His gun came up slowly, eyes locked on the far end of the room.

“Jace—”

“Stay behind me.”

I obeyed. My heart dropped straight into my stomach.

The silence broke again, this time louder as another crashing sound came from the same direction.

He stepped forward, body between me and the sound. He pulled out his gun, pointing it to the direction of the sound. I stepped behind him immediately. “Is there someone here with us?” My throat went dry. “Please tell me that’s backup.”

He shook his head once.

A tiny sound broke the silence then from behind one of the crates, a small shadow darted out.

I gasped. “Oh my God—”

The beam of Jace’s flashlight caught it just as it scurried across the floor. A rat.

A freaking mouse.

My heart was still racing like I’d seen a ghost. I pressed a shaky hand against my chest. “Seriously?”

Jace lowered his gun, the faintest sigh leaving him. “You scream louder than the threat.”

Heat rushed to my face. “I thought it was a person!”

He didn’t answer, just gave me that look—flat, unreadable, like he couldn’t decide if I was ridiculous or exhausting.

I exhaled hard, forcing a laugh that sounded more nervous than amused. “A rat. Great. I’m officially losing it.”

Silence fell again. The kind that hummed beneath your skin. The faint drip of water echoed somewhere above, and I realized my hands were still shaking. My nerves were wrecked, but he was steady and completely calm even now. What kind of a robot was he?

It was only then I realized how close I was to him. My fingers were fisted in his shirt, knuckles white. I could feel the hard lines of his chest through the fabric, the solid, steady rhythm of his breathing against my palm.

Slowly, I looked up. He was already staring down at me. His face was half-shadowed, eyes dark, unreadable but there was something there that made my breath catch.

Neither of us moved.

The air between us shifted and charged in a way that had nothing to do with fear. My grip loosened, but I didn’t step back, not until he spoke again.

“Let go,”

I stumbled back. “Right.”

My fingers dropped from his shirt, but the heat from where I’d touched him didn’t fade.

He stepped back first, turning away, gun lowering to his side. “You’ll live,” he muttered.

I wasn’t so sure. My heart was still racing, but for a completely different reason now.

He moved toward the wall, flashlight beam cutting through the dark again, every step deliberate, silent. I sank onto one of the crates, arms wrapped around myself.

It was going to be a long night.

KamaraThe next morning, pushing the memory aside. The backup had arrived by four in the morning. Now, sitting in the car, I kept my eyes on the road ahead, pretending I wasn’t aware of the silence pressing between us. I was going to college, anywhere that wasn’t near him. I couldn’t spend another minute close to this man, not with the weird thoughts my brain had started to form while we were locked together. It was the stress, I kept reminding myself. Just stress.“I won’t be able to pick you up today,” Jace said as soon as the car stopped in front of the gate. “I’ll send in someone else.”“Huh? No, you shouldn’t.”I blinked. “Huh? No, you shouldn’t.”He didn’t turn around, just adjusted the gear like he hadn’t heard me.I wasn’t fond of the idea of having a bodyguard never had been, but the thought of some random stranger shadowing me made my stomach twist. At least with Jace, I knew what kind of walls I was dealing with.“Why no?” he asked finally, glancing at me through the rearvi

Kamara “Amy?” Her grin widened, perfect teeth flashing under the chandelier light. “You remember me!” Unfortunately. I forced a small smile. “Hard to forget.” I remembered her from years ago, one of those endless summers when Dad dumped me at one of his associates’ estates, claiming it was “for my safety.” Amy had been there too. Her father was some business partner of his. I was thirteen, awkward, and alone; she was fifteen, confident, and already chasing every boy with a jawline. Especially Jace. I remembered her then, all giggles and fake innocence, hanging around him like a fly. It was sickening to watch. And Jace was never a fan. “God, you haven’t changed a bit. Still so serious.” She turned to me, still smiling too wide. “Can you believe we used to fight over who got to sit next to him during dinner?” I laughed awkwardly. “Yeah,” I said. “Those were great times.” Amy laughed, clearly missing the sarcasm. “You always were the quiet one. Guess that hasn’t changed.”

KamaraThe first thing I felt was the pounding in my head. The second was the unfamiliar quiet.Light bled through the curtains, far too bright. My tongue was dry, my skin sticky with sweat. For a moment, I couldn’t even remember where I was. Then the smell of lemon candles and clean sheets hit me.A sharp breath left me, half relief, half disbelief. The last thing I remembered was music, flashing lights… someone breathing against my neck… and then—“Don’t move.”My head snapped toward the doorway as I opened my eyes.Jace stood there, arms crossed, his usual black shirt rolled to his elbows, fresh clothes draped over one arm.“Of course you brought me back,” I muttered, trying to sit up. The motion sent another spike of pain straight through my skull. I hissed.“You were drugged last night,” he said, tone clipped but even. “You should avoid places like that.”“Drugged?” He nodded once. “I handled it. You’re safe now.”Why would someone drug me.? Shit! One party and shit was already

  • QUEEN OF THE RUINS: Born to Power. Crowned in blood    Chapter Four

Jace’ POVThe silence in the H-block office of New Coast lingered long after Mr. Mann left. Another deal closed and another set of threats neutralized. I didn’t say much, not that I ever did in those meetings. Just stood back and watched, memorizing every name and face that crossed his screen. Half of them would end up dead, the other half desperate.By the time I got to the apartment, the sun was already gone, replaced by the evening calm. I unfastened my jacket, grabbed the black-and-gold bag from the passenger seat, and climbed the stairs to her room. The gift had cost more than she’d care to know. But it was her father’s ideaa, one of his rare sentimental gestures. Custom perfume, rare vintage books, and a card he made me sign in his name.“Let her feel seen,” he’d said. As if that was enough to make up for everything else.I stopped in front of her apartment door and knocked. Once. No answer.Twice. Still nothing.“Kamara?” I called.Nothing.A cold flicker ran down my spine.

  • QUEEN OF THE RUINS: Born to Power. Crowned in blood    Chapter Three

Kamara’s POVThe entire day flew by into nothingness. I barely remembered what I’d eaten, what the lecturers said, or who sat next to me. It was all just noise. When I walked out through the university gates, I wasn’t surprised to see Jace parked across the street like some undercover stalker.I rolled my eyes so hard it hurt. “You have to be kidding me.”Wearing his signature black suit. “Good afternoon Miss Mann.” “I don’t need a chauffeur. Or a babysitter,” I snapped. He opened the passenger door anyway. “Get in, please.”I got in. Not because he asked. Because there was no point fighting anymore. I hated the formalities so much. The next day passed the same way. Flat and Numb and even more Pointless. Except this time, Valerie had enrolled. Apparently my father’s arrangements had magically fast-tracked her into a politics major. We were apart most of the day, she sat through legal debates and international diplomacy, while I slipped into a sterile lecture room with easels and cha
