The moment the last council member stormed out of the chamber, the doors slammed shut with an echo that vibrated through the polished marble floors. The air was thick, full of burned incense and bitterness. Adrien—no, Edric—remained standing near his throne, his hands fisted on the armrests as if he was holding himself back from tearing the chamber apart brick by brick.

I crossed my arms, leaning lazily against one of the golden pillars, though inside my chest my heart was racing. The man looked furious, not at me, but at them—the supposed Elder Council who had once sworn loyalty and instead fed me to betrayal.

“You’re shaking,” I said lightly, letting my voice drip with sass. “Careful, Adrien. You might actually look human if you keep showing emotions.”

His head snapped up, eyes burning with golden fire. “Kyla, do not test me right now.”

“Oh, but isn’t that what I do best?” I tilted my chin, refusing to be cowed by his fury. “Besides, what’s one more betrayal in this palace? At least

Kyla’s POV –The world split open. The cabin walls trembled and groaned as if they were made of paper instead of wood. The rift outside pulsed wider, jagged and hungry, tearing the air apart with a sound that was half a roar, half a scream. Shadows bled into light. The ground beneath my feet heaved, roots tearing free of the soil as if the forest itself wanted to flee. And then—they came. The monsters. One by one, dripping from the wound in reality like maggots from a carcass, their shapes shifting in the sickly glow. First the beast with the bone claws, its white talons digging deep furrows into the forest floor as its three eyes snapped open, burning like coals. Then came the orcs—hulking, green-skinned abominations wielding rusted axes, tusks dripping with foam. Their guttural howls rattled the trees, echoing in my ribs.Behind them slithered serpents bigger than cottages, their scales slick with blood and slime, mouths full of fangs that dripped venom thick enough to melt stone. Th

King Adrien’s POV – The Hall of PhantomsThe forest would not let me go.Every step forward felt like sinking into tar. My boots stuck, pulled down, while the whispers of her name swirled through the air like gnats, relentless. Kyla. Kyla. Kyla. It was not just the wind anymore—it was a chorus. Hundreds of voices, every pitch, every tone, and all of them hers.I knew it wasn’t real. Emerald had told me. My own mind had screamed it.But what if it was?The mist parted. And suddenly I wasn’t in the forest anymore.I was in the palace. The old one. Marble gleaming. Chandeliers blazing. Banquet halls stretching wide and endless. It smelled of roasted meats and wine. The echoes of laughter rang out, courtly and cruel.I knew this was a lie, but gods help me, my body reacted as though it were truth. My pulse steadied, my lungs filled easier. The weight of rot and darkness lifted from my shoulders. And then she appeared. At the far end of the hall, descending the stairs, dressed in white and

King Adrien’s POVThe forest breathed like a beast in slumber. Every root, every twisted branch, pulsed with a magic older than kingdoms and crueler than gods. And yet I stepped inside. The wards burned against my skin, like needles pressing into bone, but I did not stop. Emerald at my side—loyal, unshaken, foolish—pressed forward too. Our boots sank into damp soil, the mist curling low around us like it sought to bind our ankles.“Majesty,” Emerald muttered, his sword already drawn, its silvered edge humming faintly. “The spirits don’t want us here. This is suicide.”I unsheathed my blade, black steel whispering against the scabbard. “Then we will die searching for her.”The truth of my words stunned even me. But there was no taking them back. The first monster came from the mist.A shriek, ear-splitting, bone-rattling. Then a shape—skeletal, elongated, its limbs too many, its eyes hollow pits that dripped black ichor. A forest revenant, born of corrupted souls trapped too long benea

King Nollan Adrien’s POVWhere. The. Hell. Was. She?My chest was pounding so hard it was almost painful. One moment she was here—sassing me, glaring at me with those sharp eyes that somehow made me feel both infuriated and alive—and then she was gone. Just like smoke curling away in the wind. No trace, no warning, no permission.“Find her!” I roared, my voice echoing against the palace walls like a thunderclap. Guards flinched, their armor clattering as they scrambled in different directions. “Every corridor, every courtyard, every damn shadow. Search the markets, the streets, the gates. She cannot be far.”I gripped the arm of my throne until my knuckles turned white, rage prickling through me like fire beneath the skin. How dare she vanish? After everything—the attack on the council, the proof of betrayal—she chooses now to slip away? But beneath the anger was something far uglier. A gnawing, hollow panic. What if she was taken? What if she was ambushed by whoever had orchestrated

The forest swallowed me whole. At first, it was just a path—moss beneath my boots, wildflowers brushing against my legs, sunlight sneaking through the dense canopy above. But with every step I took deeper into the Woodland Path, the air thickened with magic. The kind of magic that pressed against my skin, slid along my spine, and whispered at the edges of my thoughts. It wasn’t the suffocating chokehold of court politics, nor the cold, brittle magic of the Elder Council. No—this was alive. Wild. Watching. And it was sassy.“Left, right, left, right,” I muttered under my breath, kicking a pebble down the road. “Would it kill the universe to give me a straight path? Or maybe—gasp!—a sign that says ‘Congratulations, Kyla, the power-up you’re looking for is this way!’”A chuckle rolled through the trees, low and ancient. The branches above rustled though no wind stirred them.“She thinks she’s clever.”“Correction,” I said aloud, pointing at nothing in particular, “I know I’m clever. Don’

It was an hour later with arguments and sass. The throne room still trembled with the aftershock of their argument—his clipped voice against her sharp, sassy retorts, a storm colliding against another storm. Adrien—no, Edric, though the name suited him less than the weight of his crown—stood with jaw taut, chest heaving, his hands curled at his sides like if he didn’t restrain himself, he might either drag her into his arms or throttle her for the insolence she wore like a second skin.Kyla, meanwhile, lounged back in her chair near the window as if she were utterly unbothered. Her legs crossed, her chin propped in her hand, her gaze flicking over him with infuriating calm. “You’re glaring like I just burned down your stables,” she said sweetly. “Which, for the record, I didn’t. Yet.”He exhaled through his nose. “You speak as if betrayal isn’t a wound deep enough. Do you ever take anything seriously?”“Please,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. “If I took everything as seriously as you
