Really? And that's all true?" I responded. Although I've heard a lot of rumors about the Gahndors, I could never have imagined one this intricate. It was hard for me to believe, especially since I'd heard largely good things about the royal family my whole childhood.
Macy wiggles uneasily. "Well... they are just rumors, but they make sense when you look at the Gahndors themselves. Prince Kohl, for example, is known for being quite... cold... with his people. And King Galen isn't much different."
I'm going to ask her to explain when there's a quick knock on the door. It opens a few moments later, and an elderly woman glances inside. Her face is lined with wrinkles that come from frowning too much, and her blonde hair is full of grey strands. Her slate-grey eyes locate mine, and as she fixes her stare on me, a shudder runs up my spine. We just look at each other for a little while. She then grinned.
"Miss. Agnarys, you're here. Good. My name is Greta, and I am the Head Maid." She beckons as she moves outside. "Come, child, follow me. Miss Greenwood will finish packing away your stuff while you're gone."
Macy lowers her head. Head Maid Greta ushers me out of the room and down the corridor after she gives me one more comforting smile. She picks up a quick pace right away, and I have to run to keep up.
"You have a big responsibility here, Naomi. We usually only assign the finest maids to the Queenstrials, but I decided to make an exception seeing as you're a noble." She looks me in the eyes. "I believe you will have a lot of second-hand experience from being raised as a noble, and any gaps you may have, we will fill in with my lessons."
We stroll down hallway after hallway as I nod and try not to breathe. I'm not about to ask, but I have no idea where she's going me. When we finally arrive at a door with a black paint job, she turns to face me and touches the golden knob. "I have a lot of faith in you, Naomi," she replies. "Just follow my instructions, and you'll be a great maid in no time."
She opens the door with a push. There's a blackboard and one desk inside.
The hours passed quickly. It wasn't as hard as I had anticipated to take class with Head Maid Greta. It was really pretty easy, and I didn't even realize it was six o'clock until Greta looked at the wall clock and waved me away. I'm now making my way along the hallways lighted by torches, trying to find the locations I had noted when I first arrived. An argent vase. two embroidered snakes on a tapestry. A golden trinket. I turn a corner and find myself in a familiar corridor with doors painted black, and I can't help but feel proud of myself. I should definitely learn my way around this place by heart.
I locate door 52B and open it. Entering, I watch Macy pulling at her boots while wearing what appears to be the maid's uniform. It's a far cry from what our estate's maids wore. For this outfit, black dress pants are all that are needed instead of a black skirt and a white petticoat. The silver Gahndor symbol is embroidered on the breast of a black blouse. She doesn't seem to care that her laces are loosened when she sees me because she gets up and runs over.
"How was it? Did Greta go over everything?"
I nod slowly to her. "Yeah, she taught me... a lot. I think I have the important aspects down, at least."
Macy cries out and snatches my hands. "That's great! I'm sure you'll make a wonderful maid. I wouldn't be surprised if they promote you to a higher position. Did you know higher positions can choose what they want to do? I know I would work in the gardens if I could."
I give her a smile. It wouldn't be too horrible. Then at least I could tend to flowers instead of standing at someone's feet waiting for commands.
And that's when I realize that, for the first time since I became a maid, this girl has given me a positive outlook on the job. That's enough to persuade me that I could absolutely become accustomed to Macy's company.
Macy lets go of my hands and glances back at the window, where the sun is setting. "It's six... so the opening ceremony would be over by now. The First Feast is starting soon, though. Greta told you the arrangement, yes?"
I give a nod. Greta had dragged me aside just before I had gone, telling me that my first assignment would be to wait tables at the First Feast, where the ladies of the Queenstrial would have dinner with the royal family. Macy would get the room ready for the girl we were paired with in the interim.
I still find myself dreading it. Mother had pulled me out of the competition, so even though I had managed to escape the Opening ceremony, which gave me great comfort, I would now have to serve the girls who would have been my opponents. I had a feeling that Althea would be grinning and waiting for me at the table.
I let out a sigh. Not that I have an option. So I put on a big smile and trot to my bed, where the covers have an outfit on them that looks like Macy's.
"Do you know whom we're assigned to yet?"
"Yes," responds Macy. "Gertrude Cliffgard. I can't wait!"
Reaching for the blouse, I halt. I've already met the Cliffgards. We had numerous dinners with them and their three kids, as well as their oldest daughter, Gertrude. Though I'd never met Gertrude, it was clear that politeness wasn't Gertrude's first concern from the way she stared at my sisters and disregarded concerns from her own parents.
A group of maidens, who were packing their belongings, replied that if they couldn't find Naomi in her room, they should check the dormitory. It was a coincidence that Naomi had made herself unavailable, preferring not to be seen, which irritated Altea even more. She walked backwards to the maiden quarters, knocked, and received no response. She walked further to the edge of the bedroom, naomi was lost in thought, naomi? She shouted, what have you done? She sarcastically asked, slapped her on the chick, 'Don't you dere think you can take away the prince from me?' naomi faced down raised her eyebrow, retaliated with a slap, leave my room at once, she said, 'you fool, an ordinary housekeeper, stay away from the prince. and who are you to think you can decide for me, naomi asked. Don't dere me, altea said and slammed the door behind her. What? Why was she looking for Naomi? The prince has just been informed, and I hope everything is okay with her. That altae of a girl is something else.
They heard a step; someone is approaching, Naomi said. The prince stood up, waiting to see who it was. Naomi, are you there? "I will be with you soon," she said. Naomi had a bath, dressed, and walked to Macy, who was excitedly waiting at the door. She came so they could take part in the ongoing tournament., you know I am not interested in the competition, she remarked, 'i know but let's go watch,' Macy said. They sat together and joined the already chattering crowd.Prince Kohl was locked in Naomi's room, waiting for the proper time to leave to escape any suspicion of having relationships with Naomi. He opened the door, saw no one, and proceeded silently to his chambers, where he promptly took a bath and returned to the competition grounds. His gaze quickly shifted to where Naomi was seated; they exchanged smiles and focused on the game. The hits were so loud, as opponents maintained a close eye on their opponent. "Go girl, we are behind you," a voice from the chattering crowd echoed,
He responded, "It's about time," and at precisely midnight, he changed into a big grey wolf and sprang out of the Palace without anyone knowing. He quickly leapt past a number of wolves and into the woodland. Naomi remarked, darting between the girls and giving Kohl a sardonic look from a distance, "It doesn't take long for me to realise that it's Prince Kohl." She was aware of Prince Kohl's objectives and wanted to know what they were. She finds it hard to watch Althea, her sister, get tight whenever she comes close, and she always bats her eyes in rejection when she looks at her.Even though I can scarcely see Kohl because of my poor vision, his golden eyes attract my attention when I see him. she said to herself. Kohl's lips were pursed as he looked straight into my soul as they drew closer and shared a passionate kiss. The essence of love overpowered the speed of light that flashed across their heads. Naomi, taken aback by the odd title, questioned, "Who? Me, Queen?" as Prince Koh
After supper, Agnarys walked into the council room and met Prince Kohl, eager to learn what her first mission would be, wondering and emphasising how to give it her all in order to impress the prince. Prince Kohl unknowingly interrupted her internal dialogue and asked if she was ready for her first mission; in a quick glance at the prince, Agnarys ignited and agreed, this was a moment she had always waited for.Your first objective, he added, is to prove longevity and knowledge. For example, if I wasn't in the council room, where would I be?! Agnarys realised she was entangled in an unsolved mystery. She responded, "My prince, I know I can only find you in your room right now because you never leave." Prince Kohl, astonished by her enormous intelligence, asked if she was prepared for the game of longevity. "Yes, I am," she replied. There was a knock on the door, and he stated it should be Nirnsich. I'll call you in an hour, Nirnsich, okay my prince, she replied as she returned to the
Excellent," Alex replies, standing taller than me in his human shape. He was tall, but he's grown even taller since then. He kneels next to me and transforms into a wolf in an instant. His brown skin turns to blonde fur, and his piercing green eyes don't go away when his beast fully emerges. He is really tall compared to me. I damn myself for not being taller. He lets his mouth drop. He says, "Right," in a wolf-like, gravelly voice. "So, I know I said I'm all for the basics, but I think you'll learn a little faster if I throw you into the deep end."My wolf-like features twitch into a frown. "What do you mean?" "I mean... this."He jumps on me with the speed of light and throws his weight against me. I let out a startled gasp as his weight pushes me into the floor."What the hell!" I exclaim, feeling heat shoot up my sharp cheekbones. Even fluster, it seems, won't let me go from my wolf form.Alex gives me a wolf-like smile. He presses down on my shoulders for emphasis. "I don't have
My lungs are straining as I haul my bag up another flight of steps, and I moan.I remind myself as I look up at the granite tile peak, only a few more. With each slow breath, I curse Kohl, and when at last I reach the top, it takes everything I have not to fall into the wall. His new room, which is situated just beneath the spiral staircase that leads to his room in the spire, was what he had ordered for me. I had disagreed with him about this, partly because I hadn't wanted to leave Macy behind and partly because moving seemed like a drag after settling in. But there was no disputing with the prince. I had thus made both of us feel better by handing Macy a copy of my key, which Kohl had created at my request, following an incredibly emotional farewell with her. After telling her that she was welcome to stop by at any time, I put my whole wardrobe into a suitcase and left. But I'm not concerned about Macy. Following the event, she had been fired by Gertrude and was now working in the
When Kohl finally reaches the top of the table, he exclaims, "We've made good progress," clutching the back of his seat. We still don't have a solid suspect in mind for this whole thing. Then and only then can we launch a planned, comprehensive attack."I blinked, gazing at Kohl as he examines each of his councils. It dawns on me then just how good of a liar he is. None of these people, who presumably put their trust in him, are aware that he actually has a suspect on the case, and that person happens to be his father. He is lying to their faces, and when his eyes flit to mine, I can see that they are devoid of regret. Once more, he doesn't feel bad about lying, which makes me reevaluate every opinion I have of him.He strikes the back of his chair a few moments later. "All right. Dismissed. Please keep a look out for any unusual activity and let me know when you come across it. Remain alert. Remain vigilant."At that point, the council members get up and start to file out of the buil
Prince Kohl looks at me like he's angry. I'm sure he thinks I'm going to piss now. "Did you not see the burns on her face? Of course there was boiling water in that godsdamned pitcher, what else could it have been?"I keep quiet. Prince Kohl must have seen the burns as well, not because of his elevated voice. Additionally, I am certain that the pitcher did not contain any hot water. But before I can consider it further, Prince Kohl lets out a sigh. Then he motions for me to follow as he passes by. "Come with me.""Where?""To my quarters. You're part of my council now, so it's time I introduce you to the others."I flinch. "I thought I was just going to be your maid?""No," he answers. He's quiet for a short while. He continues, "You will be my spy from now on," but I can't see his faceI stare at Kohl in shock. I'm positive that I misheard. "Pardon?" He looks at me slantwise. "You're going to be my spy, I declared. Unless, naturally, you'd prefer to be a maid.I give a headshake. "No
My face is crimson. I feel like I'm burning, I'm so red. I see scarlet. My face is flushed. I am filled with excitement as I gaze at Gertrude's coiled body, trembling and groveling. I want her to suffer. Her tears pierce my heart, and I realize that I want to hurt her even more. Every sharp note that they make just serves to fan the flames of my inner fire. They ring in my ears. I take up an iron mace from the weapons rack, its weight firm and heavy in my hand, and my movements don't even feel like mine.I look at her intently. My desire is to strike her until she bleeds. She can't breathe, she won't stop crying, and all she can do is apologize profusely for all she's done. That's why I want to beat her.I have no one observing me. Gradually, step by step, I move forward. Next up, another.Next up, another.I lift the blade. My wrist is being grabbed by someone.I turn so quickly that I nearly run into the person who is holding me. Rough breaths are heaving in my chest. His golden eye
