COMPLETELY PREPARED

I froze.

Too shocked to even breathe.

Sarah could clearly sense my shock because she immediately went silent. For a couple of seconds, I debated just ending the call.

I didn’t care about what she wanted to talk about. Besides, I knew that whatever it was, I didn’t have the patience, nor the time to entertain her.

The apocalypse was less than two days now, and I had so many things left to prepare.

I could have ended the call, probably should have. But I took a deep breath, and answered her.

“No,”

  • REBIRTH: SEVEN DAYS BEFORE DOOMSDAY    THE LAST DAY BEFORE DOOMSDAY

It was the last day before the apocalypse began, and it felt like the entire world was on mute.Somehow, I could feel it in my bones. That night, by 12pm, the mutation spread, zombies rose, and the world I had known and loved all my life would cease to exist. And yet, I was hopeful. I had seen how humanity progressed in the past life, and even though millions had died, others had survived, and some had even strived. One thing I knew for sure was that humanity was going to learn to fight for survival. Not once did it ever cross my mind to announce to the world that the apocalypse was going to begin in a couple of hours. Even if they believed me, it wasn’t going to change anything. The zombies didn’t come from a lab outbreak like in the movies. As far as I knew, it happened all around the world, at the exact same time. Whatever it was that was causing the mutations, had suddenly surged, and the humans who had not been able to withstand the mutation, had become zombies. So, even though I

But I took a deep breath, and answered her.“No,”“Please, Kara.” Her voice cracked. “I know I don't deserve anything from you, but I need to tell you something, and I need to do it in person.” She paused and took a long-drawn-out breath before she continued, “All I need is a few minutes of your time. If you still want nothing to do with me afterward, I promise I won't bother you again.”Her words were so soft, and her tone so delicate, that I found my heart softening. For once, maybe, I could listen to her.She had given me the ultimate betra

  • REBIRTH: SEVEN DAYS BEFORE DOOMSDAY   THE APOLOGY

Kara's POV:I woke up with my arms wrapped around Harris's waist, my face pressed against his chest. And for a minute or two, all I did was lay there, and listen to the steady rhythm of his heartbeats with a smile on my face.It all felt strange to me, and yet, it was all so familiar. In the last few months of my previous life, I had spent so much time fighting for survival and basic necessities, that I could not remember the last time I had such a peaceful, beautiful sleep.I still had no idea why I was here or alive, but I was forever grateful to whatever force was behind it.Judging by the way his breathing changed, I could tell Harris knew I was awake. But just like me, he was content with the status quo; Neither of us wanted to move our positions. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of peace, he shifted a little, and turned to face me,"Are you enjoying yourself, darling?" he asked, his voice almost as soothing as a purr.I felt tingles rolling down my spine as my eyes shot

  • REBIRTH: SEVEN DAYS BEFORE DOOMSDAY   TELLING HIM ABOUT THE PAST

HARRIS'S POV:I was nervous. That was a fact I had realized from the very moment we began to walk through the night.I was a man who had held the hands of presidents, negotiated deals worth literal billions of dollars and stared down dictators with a smile on my face, and yet, I was nervous.Somehow, walking beside Kara beneath the moonlight made me more nervous than any of those things. We held hands as we walked out of the large, fenced perimeter surrounding the island. I didn’t realize until I could feel the sand under my boot, that we had somehow walked all the way over to the beach. It was evening, and yet, the island was still as active as though it was daytime. All the construction crew knew they needed to be as fast as possible. So, the engineers had already started rotating the workers. I had been assured that the work was going to continue through the night.Kara looked back at the fence for a second before turning back to face the sea. We were content to stay silent for a lo

  • REBIRTH: SEVEN DAYS BEFORE DOOMSDAY   THE WORLD WILL KNEEL

The Shadow’s POV:The Shadow's smile bloomed on his face as he walked forward until he was standing right in front of an enormous glass window overlooking the city with his hands clasped behind his back.Below him, he could spot millions of tiny ants – they weren’t people to him – going about their daily lives. They were all completely unaware that the world they knew was about to change completely. His smile widened, as he felt warmth rush through his nerves. Soon, he would be god.A knock sounded behind him, and it snapped him out of his thoughts. For a second, the shadow frowned, rage bubbled within him at being interrupted. But that rage quickly left when he realized that the only reason anyone would dare risk his wrath was if they had something actually useful to report. So, he took a deep breath, and without turning around, called out, “Enter.”From the sound of the footsteps, the shadow immediately knew that three people had walked in. From the sound of their breathing, however,

  • REBIRTH: SEVEN DAYS BEFORE DOOMSDAY   A CHANCE

For several seconds after my question, nobody answered or spoke up. All of them were far too preoccupied with the shock of what they had just seen to speak up.The more the silence lasted, the more nervous everyone around us seemed. Some of the professionals began to exchange uncertain glances. Some swallowed nervously, while others began to find the rocks very interesting. The reaction was understandable, so I couldn’t blame them. I didn’t know how I would react if I had seen someone use telekinesis while also being told that the entire world I knew was going to end in just a couple of days. But right now, believing me wasn't what mattered anymore. Their survival was. Finally, after about a minute of silent deliberation. The expressions of one of the doctors firmed, so I knew he had made his choice. I was right. A couple of seconds later, with his head down and his hands trembling, he took a step forward, glanced back at Harris, before turning around to face me.“I choose to stay.”Hi
