Lila didn't move for a long moment. Then she set the phone down on the counter, face up, like touching it any longer might make it worse.

"Who has this number?" Ava asked.

"I don't know."

"Nobody?"

"I said I don't know." Lila's voice cracked on the last word, and she pressed her palm flat against her mouth for a second before she spoke again. "I need you to leave. Not because of you. I just need to think."

Ava didn't argue. She hugged her sister, longer than either of them was used to, and left

  • REBIRTH: THE BILLIONAIRE'S DEAD WIFE    Strap To The Table

Something heavy lay across her chest. When Sloane tried to sit up, the weight held her down. She pulled harder and felt the same resistance at her wrists and ankles. Thick leather straps. Buckles that clacked against metal every time she moved. The skin on her left wrist burned where the strap rubbed, but she kept pulling anyway. She had no memory of lying down. There was the last clear thing she remembered, and then there was this.A hospital, she told herself. It had to be. People got strapped down when they thrashed. A horde must have caught her on the Lowell road. Someone had dragged her inside. Any minute a nurse would come through the door, pull a mask down, and say they were sorry, they had to.The thought almost made her laugh. That kind of world was gone. The sound that came out of her was closer to a hiccup.“Hello? I’m awake. Can someone come in here?”The ceiling was white. One square panel flickered. No one answered. The table under her back was flat and cold enough to f

  • REBIRTH: THE BILLIONAIRE'S DEAD WIFE    What The Darkness Left Behind

The alarm continued blaring as Adrian caught Ava's hand and pulled her away from the wrecked shelves. Somewhere beyond the debris, footsteps moved through the darkness, close enough that she stopped and listened, trying to work out whether whoever had broken in was coming toward them or heading for another exit. "Stay behind me," Adrian said. "No. I'm not leaving you to deal with this alone." He glanced at her but didn't argue. They moved down the corridor together, keeping close to the walls as they passed the overturned furniture and broken glass. At the far end, light spilled beneath a door, and Adrian headed straight for it, his grip tightening around Ava's hand when something clattered in the room behind them. The security station was empty, its monitors dark except for one displaying a login screen. Adrian released Ava's hand long enough to move to the desk, where he began checking the system. "They've logged out," he said after a moment. "Two minutes ago." "Did they get

  • REBIRTH: THE BILLIONAIRE'S DEAD WIFE    Tell Me When You're Ready

Ava stood in the middle of the ruined office, the cracked phone still warm in her hand. Dust hung in the air, caught in the red emergency light leaking through the broken blinds."What aren't you telling me about Daniel?"Adrian dragged a hand down his face with a tired sigh. "Everything I know, I've already told you. Someone kept him away from you. Someone monitored everyone around you for years. I don't know why he mattered enough for that.""You expect me to believe that?""I don't expect anything from you right now." His voice had gone rough. "I'm telling you the truth as far as I have it. I never knew why. Just that it mattered to somebody enough to erase him."Ava studied his face in the dim light, looking for the small tells she'd learned to catch over the past weeks, the flicker before a lie, the hesitation before a half-truth. She found neither. Just exhaustion, and something underneath it that looked almost like fear."And what about me?" she said quietly. "What else do you

  • REBIRTH: THE BILLIONAIRE'S DEAD WIFE    The Bait

The security firm had dissolved years ago, folded into a shell company and then into nothing at all, according to every public record Ava could find. But the network hadn't dissolved with it. She found the access point just before dawn, buried behind three layers of old routing that nobody had bothered to shut down properly."This shouldn't still be live," Adrian said, leaning over her shoulder in the glow of the screen."It's not just live." Ava scrolled faster, her pulse climbing. "It's active."New entries filled the log, dated within the last month. Her current address. A coffee shop she'd visited twice. A dinner with Lila three weeks ago, timestamped to the minute."They never stopped," Adrian said quietly. She didn't answer. Her mind was already somewhere else, chasing a thought she wasn't ready to say out loud yet.Ava scrolled further back, past the recent entries, into older records nobody had touched in years. An address surfaced, a house she recognized from childhood summer

  • REBIRTH: THE BILLIONAIRE'S DEAD WIFE    In The Dark

Ava's hand found the heavy glass paperweight on the desk before her mind had fully caught up with the dark. She swept it up, moved three steps back from the window on instinct, her shoulder blades finding the wall behind her."Ava." Adrian's hand brushed her arm, searching for her in the black. She caught his wrist instead. "Don't.""I need to know you're—""I'm here. Quiet."A sound cut through the dark from down the hall. A drawer, slammed hard enough to echo off the walls of the archive room."Someone's in there," Ava whispered."Stay behind me."Ava didn't. She was already moving, the paperweight gripped tight, her bare feet silent against the floor while Adrian cursed under his breath and fell into step close behind her.A shadow cut across the doorway ahead, fast, low, and was gone before they could fully register the shape of it.Ava went after it.She hit the archive room half a second behind the shape, heard a shelf go over with a crash that sent papers scattering across the

  • REBIRTH: THE BILLIONAIRE'S DEAD WIFE    The Boy In The Photograph

Ava stared at the photograph until the edges of it blurred, her own teenage face grinning back at her from a memory she didn't have."I don't know him," she said. "I don't remember this. I don't remember any of this.""But you're standing right next to him," Adrian said quietly."I know what I'm looking at."Her thumb brushed the edge of the print, and that was when she noticed it. The angle was wrong. The shadows falling the way they did when someone shot from a distance with a long lens instead of standing close enough to be in the frame themselves."He didn't take this," she said slowly.Adrian leaned in over her shoulder, his breath caught. "No. Look at the angle. Whoever took this was across the garden. Hidden.""Someone was watching us. Both of us."The old man's hands shook as he reached for the photograph again, turning it over, squinting at something stamped faint on the back corner. If his face had already gone pale once tonight, it went paler now."This stamp," he rasped. "
