LOGINCHAPTER 25: THE RUN BACK
Killian did not leave Jax to die alone. He held Jax's hand for 10 more seconds. Jax's hand was turning black. Veins black. Fast. The black was crawling up like oil under skin. Bianca had told him on Day 12: Once black reaches eyes, human is gone. Don't touch. Don't breathe same air. "Dad?" the boy said. His voice shook. Mask too big. Jax looked at his son. One second human. Clear. Eyes red but human. "Run," Jax told the boy. His voice was Dad voice. Strong. Last strong. "Run with him. Bunker 3. Tell them Jax sent you. Tell them 1.48kg." Killian understood. He let go of Jax's black hand. His own hand was sweaty. He wiped it on mud. No black on his hand. Good. He grabbed one fuel drum. 50 kilos. Heavy. He dragged it, not carried. Mud helped it slide. Diesel smell strong. "Boy, push!" Killian shouted. His oxygen mask fogged. 19% out here vs 22% inside. Every breath thin. The boy pushed the other side. 10 years old but strong like Jax. Same nose. Same push. Behind them, Jax screamed. Not human scream. Turning scream. High like child. Then gurgle. Black blood. The white hazmat trucks stopped at the tower. Two trucks. Big. Military tires. Fresh tracks Killian saw before. Men in white jumped out. Four men. Clean suits. Too clean. Gas masks with filters. They saw the four drums behind pump house. They took two drums fast. Threw on truck. No talk. Professional. They did not see Killian and the boy in the bush behind fallen water tank. One man in white saw Jax. Jax was on knees now, fully black eyes, crawling to drums like animal. The man raised gun. Rifle. M4. No shot. The man just watched Jax turn and walked away. Like he expected it. Like he had seen Cache A before. Killian and the boy kept dragging one drum through the mud. To the bunker road. The road was two hours walk on normal day. Now with 50 kilos, it was three. Sunset. 18:20. Cold. One drum is 50 liters. Enough for 4 days generator. Enough to keep incubator at 36.5 for Tiny Elena. Enough for Elena's twins to stay warm. Elena was 20 weeks ruptured membrane. She needed heat. Tiny Elena was 1.48kg fever 38.9. She needed heat more. In Killian's pocket, the small silver chain. Similar to Tiny Elena's own chain that she still wears inside. The one Killian found on Day 88 on the road with 11 cans of formula, when he thought his brother Keon was eaten by infected. Bloody. Now in his pocket. Heavy like gold. They walked one hour. Boy fell two times. Killian's knees hurt. 34 but felt 70. Then bunker in sight. Hill. Bunker 3. Killian stopped 50 meters away. Rule. Day 4 rule. No one runs to bunker door. Raiders follow. Must signal. He took radio from belt. Old Baofeng. Battery 20%. He pressed. "Bianca, Elena, Damian, this is Killian. I am back. I have fuel. One drum. 50 liters. And a boy. Jax's son." Static. Then Elena's voice. Elena pregnant, scared. "Killian? Is that you? Where is Jax?" Killian: "Jax is gone. Turned. Cache A gave him 50 hours. This is his son. 10 years old." Then Damian's voice. Damian was guard. Day shift. "Killian, stay at line. We check camera. Don't move. Boy too." Camera. Bunker had two cameras. Old CCTV from water plant. One at gate, one at road. Elena ran to monitor room. Bianca with Tiny Elena in incubator could not run. Elena looked at screen. Grainy. Black white. She saw two figures. One big, one small, with drum in mud. She zoomed. "Killian, raise your mask," Elena said on radio. Killian raised mask. His dirty face and Beard. "Now boy, raise your mask," Elena said. Boy raised his mask that was too big for him Face small. Eyes clean. No black veins. He's still human. Damian checked second camera. No one following. No hazmat trucks. No raiders. "How we know it's not trick?" Damian said. "Raiders use kids now." Elena remembered code. Day 7 code. They made code for this. "Killian, what is Tiny Elena weight today morning?" Elena asked. Killian answered: "1.48kg. Fever 38.9. This morning 38.9. Bianca gave paracetamol." Correct. "And what did we mark fuel with on Day 4?" Damian asked. Killian: "Bunker 3 in red paint. On blue drums. Four drums. I marked it." Correct. Elena pressed door button. Old metal door creaked. Bunker door opened 1 meter only. Rule. "Run now, drag drum now!" Damian shouted from door. He held pipe, not gun. No bullets left. Killian and boy dragged drum last 50 meters. Fast. There were muds on his boot and Boy breathing hard. They reached door. Inside light yellow. Generator low. 22% oxygen inside, better. Bianca was at door with Tiny Elena in arms, incubator open. Tiny Elena had chain on neck. Small silver chain with tiny cross. Still there. Safe. So chain in Killian's pocket was similar chain, not hers. Proof Keon story true. Elena was behind with her big belly ruptured but alive. She held her belly. Damian closed door fast. Locked three locks. Boy fell on floor. Crying. No mask now. Killian put drum down. 50 liters safe. He took chain from pocket. Bloody and gave it to Bianca. Bianca saw chain. Similar to Tiny Elena's. She knew it. Day 88 story. "Keon?" she whispered. Killian: "I thought he was eaten when I found formula and chain on road. Now Jax had this chain. Maybe Keon lived?" Bianca held both chains. Tiny Elena's chain on Tiny Elena neck still. Similar chain from pocket bloody. Two similar chains, not same. Fuel is here. Boy is here. Jax is gone. But question remains: How Jax got similar chain when Bianca never took Tiny Elena's chain off? And why hazmat men watched Jax turn and walked away like they knew Cache A?The door closed behind them.I stood there for a few seconds, just looking at the door. My hand was still in the air, where Killian's hand was before.I felt empty immediately. Even though I know he will come back, my heart always beats fast when he goes outside.Bianca looked at me. "Are you okay?" she asked.I nodded. "Yes. I am okay. I just... I always worry when he goes out.""I understand," she said. "I used to worry like that too."Leo pulled my dress small. "Elena, don't worry. Killian is strong. He will beat everybody."I smiled. "I know, Leo. He is strong."I sat down slowly on the chair. My belly was heavy this morning. The twins were moving small small. I placed my hand on my belly to calm them."Eva," I said, "show me outside camera."Eva answered, "Yes, Elena. Showing outside camera now."The small screen on the wall came on. I could see Killian and Damian walking outside. The outside was quiet. The sun was just coming up. The road was empty. No raiders. No noise. Only th
CHAPTER 29: THE MORNING AFTERI woke up slowly. The room was still dim. The soft light from the wall was still on low, the way Killian likes it at night. I did not open my eyes at first. I just stayed there, listening. His breathing was steady. His arm was still around me. His hand was still on my belly. He had not moved all night.I opened my eyes a little. He was awake and was looking at me."Good morning, my love," he whispered.I smiled. "Good morning. You still did not sleep?"He smiled back. "I didn't sleep much. But I woke up early to watch you. You were sleeping like an angel again."I laughed small. "Killian, you always say that.""Because it is true," he said. He kissed my forehead. "How is your body? Did the twins disturb you at night?""just a little" I said. "They kicked once, then they slept again. I think they like sleeping on your chest too."He laughed. His laugh was low and soft, so it would not wake the whole bunker. He rubbed my belly slowly, in small circles. "Goo
It was bedtime in Bunker 3.Everyone had already cleaned up. The day had been long and heavy, and the bunker finally felt quiet. Killian had washed off the mud from the run. Leo had washed his hands and face, and his shoes were by the door drying. Damian had wiped his pipe clean and kept it beside him. Bianca had changed Tiny Elena's small cloth, and the baby was now resting peacefully. The generator was steady. Eva had dimmed the lights for the night, and the whole bunker had that soft, sleepy feeling.I was in the inner room with Bianca and little Elena to make sure that her body is finally calm and at the same I was waiting for Killian to finish up so we can go back to our room. Tiny Elena was asleep on Bianca's chest. Her fever had gone down. Her little chain was still around her neck, resting gently against Bianca's skin. Bianca looked tired, but she looked peaceful too, the way a mother looks when her baby is finally sleeping. Then Killian came in.He did not whisper. He spoke
The drum changed everything. After Killian dragged it in and Damian sealed the three locks, Eva connected the fuel line herself. She is not just a voice on the speaker. She has arms in the walls. She plugged it in, checked the pressure, and the generator stopped coughing. The yellow light got brighter. Not bright like before the world ended, but steady. No more flicker."Power stable at 68%," Eva said. "We can run the incubator now."Bianca looked up from the mattress. Tiny Elena was in her arms, burning up. Her little body was hot, too hot. She had been crying in that small, tired way for hours, and her breathing was fast."We need to build it now," Bianca said.Killian was already moving. He had been saving parts for this for weeks — a clear plastic box from the old clinic, a small heater, some wires, a soft blanket. Damian, even with his arm still sore from the Day 1 bite, helped him carry the box to the inner room. Today is Day 88, he is almost recovered, so he could lift with one
Eva spoke first."Killian is coming. With a boy. Fifty meters. Dragging a drum."Her voice was flat through the small speaker, but everyone inside Bunker 3 froze when they heard it.I was in the inner room with Bianca. She was on the mattress with Tiny Elena curled against her chest, asleep. I was sitting next to them, leaning against the cold concrete because lying down has become hard. I'm 20 weeks now, and with twin boys you feel it everywhere — your back, your legs, everything is heavy.Damian was near the main door. He was checking his pipe. He's still weak from the bite he had. Eva says he's almost recovered, but you can still see it when he moves his left arm.Bianca looked at me. "Eva says Killian is outside?"I nodded and pushed myself up. Slow. You have to get up slow now."Check cameras," Damian said. That is always the rule. Before we open for anyone, we check.I went to the front camera monitor. It's an old screen, the picture is grainy and yellow, but it works. Damian we
