It was late in the afternoon. The air was filled with sweat, old concrete as prisoners walked around the yard whilst armed guards kept an eye on them. Selene did not raise her eyes and sat quietly. She didn’t want trouble. She couldn’t afford it. Not with the baby coming soon.
There was a crack of noise which broke into the yard. “You stupid liar!” Two prisoners leaped at each other, and punched each other with fists. Very quickly a crowd was formed, cheering and shouting. Guards shouted on the tower, though they did not come running down. Fights like this were common. Selene didn’t move from her spot. She was leaning on the fence and stroking her belly. She wanted to stay invisible. She would have liked the day to go by without people noticing her. But the quiet ones were always found in trouble. Heavy feet were scraping the ground behind her. Selene stiffened. She did not have to turn around to tell who it was. Liora Voss. A broad-shouldered, tall, tattooed woman with anger in her eyes. Liora Voss loved breaking people. Especially weak ones. Well, well, said Liora Voss loudly when she halted before Selene. “Look who’s hiding back here.” Selene kept her eyes down. Liora Voss tilted her head. “Hey. I’m talking to you, 1165. Lift your head.” Slowly, Selene raised her chin. The accident had scarred and disfigured her face, the cause of people staring, whispering, or quickly looking away. Liora Voss burst out laughing. “Damn, 1165. I have no appetite when I look on your face.” Some of the other inmates near by laughed. Selene breathed quietly. She didn’t respond. She couldn’t. Her vocal chords were destroyed and every time she attempted to speak, she produced a broken and rough voice. “What?” Liora Voss asked. “You too good to answer me?” Selene swallowed. Liora Voss stepped closer. “Say something.” Selene opened her mouth, and attempted to make a sound. “Hhh… k–” The sound was harsh and agonizing. It was as though it were a car engine that was difficult to start. Liora Voss laughed and threw her head back. “Oh my God. What was that? Do it again.” Selene shut her mouth tightly. “Oh, come on,” Liora Voss said. “Don’t be shy. Give us another engine sound.” More laughter. The large belly of Selene fell into the eyes of Liora Voss. “So you are going to carry that thing in there, huh? “ she said, giving Selene a single poke on the stomach with a finger. Selene jerked back, with her hands on her belly. “Calm down,”Liora Voss said. “I’m just checking.” Selene made a little sound. “Pl… sss…” Liora Voss leaned closer. “What was that? Speak properly.” Selene tried again. “Pl… stop…” It came out like a low crackle. Hard to understand. Liora Voss smirked. “You know what? I do not speak broken-engine language.” She poked Selene harder. This time Selene flinched, and the baby moved in her. Liora Voss narrowed her eyes. “Move your hands, 1165. Let me see.” Selene shook her head and withdrew. Liora Voss’s face darkened. “I don’t think you get it. I run this yard. Not the guards. Not you. Me. And, when I say show me the belly, you show me the belly.” Selene’s shoulders trembled. She didn’t want to cry. Not in front of Liora Voss. Liora Voss slapped her stomach, hard. Selene felt a jolt of pain in her body. She gasped and bent over. Liora Voss stepped back, confused. “What’s your problem now? Don’t act like I hurt you.” Selene caught the fence and was breathing rapidly. The pain didn’t stop. It increased, and covered her belly and her back and her legs. “Hey…” Liora Voss muttered. “You okay?” Selene attempted to speak, and only a choked and broken sound was produced. Other prisoners began to shout. “She’s in labor!” “She’s gonna drop that baby!” “Someone get the guards!” “Leave her alone Liora Voss or you’ll go into solitary confinement again!” Two guards rushed over. One pushed Liora Voss aside. “Stay down!” A guard hissed at Liora Voss. “What happened?” She demanded. Liora Voss lifted her hands. “She just started screaming! I didn’t do anything!” Selene weakly shook her head and clutched her belly. The second guard was on his knees by her side. “1165, are you listening to me?” Selene was able, but not able to react appropriately. She uttered a groan, which was tremulous and disjointed. “Call medical!” the guard shouted. “Now!” Her legs gave out completely. She fell on the ground trembling. The ache was making her feel as though something was eating her inside. There was a stretcher clattering over the yard. They lifted her onto it. Her breath was short gasps. Drips of sweat ran down her forehead. “Stay with us, 1165,” said one of the guards as they took her to the hospital. The hospital of the prison was reeking of antiseptic and cold air. Nurses moved around quickly. “She’s fully dilated!” “Get the delivery kit!” “She needs to push!” Selene’s body shook. The pain was too much. She attempted to breathe, and her breathing was ragged. A nurse held her hand. “You need to push, 1165. Do it now.” Selene tried. “Again!” She pressed harder, till her entire body shook. A crude note tore out of her throat. “Her heartbeat is dropping!” “Push harder!” “One last push!” She pushed… Then her world went black. As she opened her eyes, all had been silent and still. She had to wait a moment to recall where she was. She turned her head slowly. The physician was standing by her bed, and he looked serious. “Selene, he said,” calling her name, for the first time in years”Can you hear me?” She nodded, her eyes heavy. He sighed and gazed a little and then looked up at her. “I’m… very sorry,” he said quietly. “Your baby was stillborn.”Liora’s pov That night, rest slipped through my fingers like sand. Sleep never really settled in at all.Darkness brought it back, every single night. Not dreams - just words stacked into wounds. My title twisted by strangers, reshaped without asking. Selene’s pov From my laptop screen, I saw it all happen, silent the whole time.Liora’s name had spread far without warning.More like quiet than joyful.Nothing like what she had hoped for.It was messy.Fast.Uncontrolled.Open tabs spilled across the screen - news here, chatter there, numbers ticking somewhere else. All of it hummed together, too fast, like wires sparking under pressure. These days, my response isn’t what it once was.Not with shock. Not with hesitation.I just observed.Fear began to show through Liora’s public appearances. Interviews felt strained, somehow. Words came out clipped. Smiles didn’t reach her eyes. Each gesture seemed measured.Twice now, I’ve gone back to watch that latest moment she showed up on screen.Fingers trembling just a bit as the microphone touched her hand. One small thing made it clear. What mattered stood out without more proof.Back I leaned, the chair tipping slightly as fingers snapped the clip shut.Far off near the wall, Ronan tapp
Liora’s pov Before the alarm sounded, I opened my eyes. That morning began without its usual call. For reasons beyond my choice. Beside me, the phone kept jumping across the wood surface. A constant shake that never quite quit. It started like any other day - alerts popping up, people saying they liked the new tracks, reminders tied to the record release. Then something felt off. Yet still, the shaking carried on. It kept going. Again and again. Half caught in slumber, I stretched toward it without rising all the way. A sudden glow came from the display. Dozens of alerts. Then hundreds. The air in my lungs turned heavy right away. Up I sat in bed, then tapped the screen to unlock it. A bright screen caught my eye right away. It showed a post from a well-known site that covers shows and stars. Beneath my ribs, a hollow plunge began, long before the last word came into view. I clicked it. The article loaded. Slowly. Too slowly. Cold crept into my f
Selene’s pov After shutting the laptop, the phrases still played inside my head. Though the device was off, letters lingered behind my eyes. What appeared briefly refused to fade completely. Screen gone dark, yet thoughts stayed lit. Even in silence, lines echoed without asking. The moment ended, but pieces stuck around. Not much said - still, it held on. “You’re not the only one hunting her.” Staring at the coffee, gone cold now, thoughts stuck on that one thing again. Ronan stayed nearby, quiet too, both of us just there without words. Not peaceful - this hush pressed harder than noise ever could. Out of nowhere, it snapped. “This changes everything,” I said. For a moment, Ronan stayed silent. Near the window he stood, eyes fixed on the road beneath, as if sorting through thoughts too heavy to name. His arms were folded tight across his chest. Only later did he turn my way. “It doesn’t change everything,” he said calmly. “It adds noise.” A small laugh slipped out.
Selene’s pov The lights flickered just as the notification appeared on my screen. A silence hung thick in the air while I stared at the words.A sound came from the laptop, just one brief noise that made me look up right away. Staring at documents had taken most of sixty minutes already - recordings here, online posts there, scattered details others tried matching together - all swirling behind my eyes.Forward motion came with each new detail. Step by step, the path grew clearer through what was learned. This time felt unlike anything before.A message appeared, but it wasn’t tied to someone I knew.No name.No profile picture.Just a message. For just a moment, my hands stopped above the pad until I pressed down. Then came the click.Heavy, the screen crept into view. The screen blinked awake. A window appeared.A folder appeared.I frowned slightly.Inside were documents.Audio files.Screenshots.For just a moment, my heart dipped low, as if my skin needed time to believe it befo
Liora’s POVMy hands began to shake once again, and I was still staring at my phone. The post was still there. That lyric. That exact line.I reloaded the page, although I was aware that it would not go away.It didn’t.The remarks continued to increase.Whence was this? This is not in her album. This is too personal.I rolled on more, my breath coming out at a lump.“No,” I muttered. “No, no, no…”I shut the phone and stood up and paced the room.It can not be so, I said to myself. “No one knows that line.”I had a tight feeling in my chest. It was no ordinary lyric of his.It was hers.Selene’s.I still had it in mind.Too clearly. We were in the studio and we were sitting on the floor and we were throwing ideas around with the notebooks open. She had uttered that line very low, as though she did not want to say it.I had laughed.I informed her that it was excessive.Too emotional.Too real. And now—It was online. My hands to fists. This is no accident, I said.I picked my phone u

Selene got out of the jail van slowly, with her hands cuffed in front of her, and her head down.
