Chapter 9: THE THING IN THE DARK

The footsteps grew louder, shaking dust from the ceiling tiles with every impact, and Emily's Tactical Overview painted a picture that made her stomach drop — something massive, moving with deliberate, almost intelligent purpose, converging on their exact position through corridors it seemed to know better than they did.

"Move," Daniel snapped, already herding his team toward the reinforced door they'd entered through. "Now."

They ran, boots pounding against tile, flashlight beams bouncing wildly against walls lined with abandoned equipment. Behind them, the footsteps accelerated into something closer to a charge, and the entire hallway trembled as whatever pursued them crashed through a doorway that had clearly not been built to withstand it.

Emily risked a glance backward and immediately wished she hadn't.

It had once been human, the way the mutant in the alley had once been human, but scaled up into something far worse — nearly nine feet tall, its body a grotesque architecture of exposed muscle and bone, four arms where there should have been two, ending in claws that scraped sparks against the concrete floor. Its head, when it turned toward them, held too many eyes, all burning the same malevolent red she'd seen once before, multiplied into something that felt less like an animal and more like a nightmare given purpose.

[Entity Classification: Zombie King (Prototype). Threat Level: Extreme. Combat not recommended at current level.]

"That's not a suggestion I need the system to tell me twice," Emily muttered, sprinting alongside Daniel as they burst through the facility's rear exit into the gray morning light.

The creature tore through the doorway behind them without slowing, wood and metal exploding outward in its wake, and Emily's mind raced through every scrap of tactical knowledge she possessed, searching for anything that might give them an edge against something so far beyond what she'd faced before.

"The fence line," she gasped. "If we can get it into the open ground near the perimeter, Marcus can hit it from the tree line—"

"With what?" Marcus's voice crackled over the radio, tense and controlled despite the chaos. "I've got a hunting rifle, Emily, not an anti-tank weapon!"

"Just get ready to draw its attention!"

They broke into open ground, the Zombie King's roar shaking the air behind them, and Emily's system flared with sudden new information as her Tactical Overview processed the creature's movement patterns in real time.

[Pattern Identified: Entity relies on sound and vibration for tracking. Visual acuity reduced. Recommend: Diversion tactics.]

It wasn't perfect information, but it was something — and something was infinitely better than nothing when the alternative was being torn apart by a creature four times her size. Emily grabbed a chunk of broken concrete from the rubble at her feet and hurled it hard toward the fence line, the impact cracking loud against metal.

The Zombie King's head snapped toward the sound, momentarily losing their trail, and Emily used the half-second of confusion to shove Daniel toward the tree line where Marcus waited, rifle already raised.

"Go, go, go—"

Marcus's first shot took the creature high in the shoulder, drawing a furious bellow and its full attention away from the fleeing group, exactly as Emily had gambled it would. But a hunting rifle, even fired with Marcus's considerable skill, did little more than enrage something that size, and the Zombie King charged the tree line with a speed that belied its monstrous bulk.

"Marcus, move!" Emily screamed, already sprinting to intercept, knife drawn, knowing even as she did it that a blade that had killed one mutant would likely do almost nothing against something this evolved.

The system's voice cut through her panic with sudden, sharp clarity.

[Emergency Protocol Available: Host may expend all current Storage Space contents for emergency deployment. Recommend: Incendiary materials.]

Emily didn't hesitate. She reached into the storage space with her mind and hurled every fuel canister she'd stockpiled directly into the creature's path, a dozen containers materializing from thin air and shattering against the ground in a wide arc directly beneath its charging feet. She struck the emergency flare from her belt against her palm and threw it in the same motion, and the world erupted into fire.

The Zombie King's roar became something else entirely — agony, raw and enormous, as flames engulfed its lower body, the creature thrashing and stumbling as burning fuel clung to torn flesh that had never been designed to withstand something as simple and ancient as fire. It staggered, off balance for the first time since the chase began, and Marcus's second shot took it directly through one of its many burning eyes.

It collapsed into the flames with a final, shuddering groan, and the silence that followed felt almost unbearably loud.

For a long moment, nobody moved. Then Daniel let out a breath that was half laugh, half disbelief, staring at Emily like he was seeing her clearly for the first time. "You just took down something that size with fuel canisters and a flare."

"I improvised," Emily said, hands shaking now that the immediate danger had passed, adrenaline draining out of her all at once.

[Mission Complete: Survive encounter with Zombie King prototype.]

[Reward: Massive Experience gained. Class Advancement available.]

[Reward: Rare Item acquired — Chimera Research Data (Partial).]

[Storage Space Notice: Contents expended. Rebuild recommended.]

She sank onto a fallen log at the tree line's edge, exhaustion crashing over her in a wave, and looked at the burning wreckage of the creature that had, only minutes ago, seemed like certain death. If prototypes like this were already active a month into the outbreak, whatever Vanessa Kane and Praxis Group were building toward was worse — far worse — than anything Emily had experienced in her first, doomed timeline.

Daniel crouched beside her, still holding the partial research data they'd managed to save from the facility's servers. "This changes things," he said quietly. "If Praxis is actively developing this virus rather than just having accidentally released it, that means the outbreak isn't over. It's just getting started."

"I know," Emily said, watching the flames slowly die down around the fallen creature. "I've known since the mutants started appearing early. Something's accelerating this, pushing it faster and worse than it should be going."

"You keep saying things like you already know how this was supposed to unfold." Daniel's voice was careful, curious rather than accusatory. "Ms. Carter, who exactly are you?"

Emily looked at him for a long moment — this stranger who'd shown her a truth that reshaped everything she thought she understood about her second chance, who'd fought alongside her against something that should have killed them both, who was watching her now with the particular intensity of a man trying to solve a puzzle he suspected was far larger than he currently realized.

"Someone who's not going to let this happen again," she said finally. "Not to the people I care about. Not to anyone."

It wasn't an answer, not really, but something in her tone must have satisfied whatever question he was truly asking, because he simply nodded and extended a hand to help her to her feet.

"Then you're going to need allies who understand exactly what we're up against," Daniel said. "I still have contacts. People who might still be alive, still have access to information about Praxis Group's other facilities. If you're building something worth fighting for on Miller Road, Ms. Carter, I'd like to be part of it."

Emily studied his offered hand, thought of Marcus's steady loyalty, of Sarah's quiet dedication, of the fourteen — now growing — people who had chosen to trust her with their lives. Building alliances, she was learning, wasn't a weakness the way Jason's betrayal had once made her believe love and trust could be. It was a strength, carefully chosen and fiercely protected.

She shook his hand.

"Welcome to Miller Road," she said. "Just don't expect it to be quiet."

Behind them, as the fire finally burned itself out over the fallen Zombie King's corpse, the system delivered one final notification, quiet and certain, into the depths of her mind.

[New Mission: Uncover the full scope of Project Chimera and confront Praxis Group. Warning: High difficulty. Multiple confrontations expected.]

[Notice: Host has demonstrated exceptional growth. Class Advancement available upon return to base.]

Emily looked back toward the city, toward Miller Road and the fortress she'd built from nothing, and felt the familiar, steady resolve settle back into her chest.

The apocalypse had taken everything from her once. This time, she intended to make sure it never had the chance to take anything from her again.

The Halloway Research Campus sat behind three layers of chain-link fencing on the northern edge of the city, close enough to the original outbreak site that even a month later, the ground around it seemed wrong somehow — too quiet, birds refusing to nest in the skeletal trees that lined the access road.Emily hadn't planned to come here so soon. But the system's persistent notification, and her own growing unease about mutations appearing weeks ahead of the timeline she remembered, had made the decision for her."You're sure about this?" Marcus asked, crouched beside her in the tree line overlooking the facility's outer fence. "Whatever caused all this started here. Doesn't exactly scream 'safe place to go looking around.'""I'm not sure of anything anymore," Emily admitted. "That's the problem. Everything I remember about how this was supposed to go is starting to fall apart. Mutants three weeks early. A virus that's evolving faster than it should. I need to know why."They weren't a

They came three nights later, under cover of darkness, exactly as Emily had known they would. Her Threat Sense had been humming a low, steady warning since sundown, sharpening with every passing hour until, just past midnight, it spiked hard enough to jolt her upright on her cot. She was on her feet and moving before she'd fully processed the alert, waking Marcus with a hand on his shoulder."They're here."The defenses they'd spent three days preparing snapped into motion with practiced precision. David killed the visible lights, plunging the warehouse into strategic darkness while keeping their own night-vision advantage intact — a scavenged set of goggles Emily had specifically prioritized after her tactical awareness flagged how badly they'd need them. Marcus took position at the reinforced door with two of the survivors he'd been training, rifles ready. Sarah moved the noncombatants — Maria, Lily, and the others too young or too injured to fight — into the fortified back room Dav

Two weeks after the outbreak, the warehouse on Miller Road had stopped looking like an abandoned building and started looking like something else entirely — a fortress, small but growing, humming with the quiet industry of people who had decided, together, that they were going to live.David had rigged the solar panels within his promised week, giving them power that didn't depend on a generator's dwindling fuel supply. Sarah had converted a side office into a functioning medical bay, sparse but clean, and had already treated two survivors Emily brought in from the wreckage of the city beyond their walls. Maria organized the growing supply stores with an efficiency that made even Marcus raise his eyebrows, and Lily, resilient in the particular way only children seemed able to manage, had started drawing pictures of the warehouse on scraps of cardboard, labeling it HOME in careful six-year-old letters.Fourteen people now called the warehouse home, each one someone Emily remembered los

By the fourth day, the city Emily had grown up in no longer resembled anything human. She stood at the edge of the loading bay, dressed in salvaged tactical gear that Marcus had scrounged from an army surplus store before the roads became impassable, and studied the map spread across a supply crate. Red circles marked the locations of the people she remembered — survivors who, in her old life, hadn't found safety until it was almost too late, if they found it at all."You want to go out there." Marcus didn't phrase it as a question. "Into that.""There's a woman two miles from here with a six-year-old daughter, trapped in an apartment building surrounded by infected," Emily said, not looking up from the map. "There's an engineer holed up in a hardware store who's going to run out of food in two days. I'm not leaving them to die because it's inconvenient.""It's not inconvenient. It's suicide.""Not for me." Emily rolled the map and tucked it into her jacket. "I have advantages you don

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: MY SSS-LEVEL SURVIVAL SYSTEM   Chapter 4: DAY ZERO

The outbreak began exactly the way Emily remembered it — and knowing didn't make it any easier to watch. It started as a story on the morning news, buried beneath weather and traffic: a "containment incident" at the Halloway Research Campus on the edge of the city, officials urging calm, promising the situation was under control. Emily had heard those same false assurances once before, in a life that no longer technically existed, and she knew exactly how many hours remained before the word "contained" became a lie too large to hide."We're moving everyone to the warehouse. Today," she told Claire over breakfast, not touching her own coffee.Claire frowned at the television, at the reporter's carefully neutral expression. "Em, it's probably nothing. A chemical leak, maybe—""Today," Emily repeated, and something in her voice made her sister set down the spoon without arguing further.By noon, Emily had called in every favor and cashed every remaining bit of trust she'd built over the
