Aurora's POV

“Where is Ivy?”

I shouted it at every face I passed, whether they knew who Ivy was or not. Nobody answered. They were all running too.

The street was on fire. Cars sat in the road with their doors open, and some of them were burning. Smoke covered the sun and turned the sky a dirty orange. Broken glass cracked under my shoes. Ahead of me, a crowd was banging on the doors of an office building, begging to be let in.

“We have kids in here!”

“No more room!”

“Get back!”

I understood them. Everyone wanted to live. I wanted to live too, but mostly I wanted it for one small girl in a yellow coat.

A woman grabbed my sleeve as I ran past. “You’re a doctor, aren’t you? You have the badge. My husband can’t breathe.”

“I’m not that kind of doctor,” I said. I hated how it sounded.

She let go. And I kept running.

I had studied the Mars Virus for six years. I knew how fast it spread and how a simple fever could empty a hospital ward in a day. I had written the warnings myself. People read the first page and nodded, and then the first hospital filled up, and then the next one, down to the last.

My husband, Damian, had been gone for two months. He had said he would be home for dinner and never came. No note, no call, nothing. I had stopped waiting for him and started running.

I stopped at a corner to catch my breath and searched the crowd for a yellow coat. There were only strangers and smoke.

That morning I had left her at the shelter on Alder Street and gone to the lab for my samples. When I came back, the doors were broken and the building was empty.

What kind of mother leaves her child to chase a cure that never came?

'Don't think,' I told myself. 'Just find her.'

A scream came from the street behind me.

I turned around. A man was on the ground, shaking so hard his shoes scraped the pavement. A woman knelt next to him and tried to hold him still. I knew those signs. I had written them down a hundred times.

Then, suddenly, his back bent the wrong way.

I heard bones crack. A wet, ugly sound came out of his throat, and the woman jumped back. His fingers twisted and his nails grew long and black. When he looked up, his eyes were gold.

“What the hell is that?” the woman whispered.

I could not move. None of my notes had this in them. His spine rose under his shirt. His jaw pushed forward. Fur broke through his skin, and in a few seconds he was down on both hands and legs, and he was not a man anymore. It took about eleven seconds. I counted, because counting was the only thing my mind could still do.

He was a wolf, and he was huge.

It looked around the street as if it was deciding something. Then it jumped at the nearest person.

I ran with the crowd. I did not think about my research or what it meant. Viruses make people sick. They do not turn them into monsters. Unless this had never been only a virus.

“Ivy!” I screamed. “Ivy!”

A growl rose up from behind me. I turned back and saw the wolf coming for me, and two more beside it. One of them had a metal band around its back leg that flashed in the firelight. A thin strip of metal with a number scratched into it. Wild animals do not wear numbers.

I could not outrun three wolves. I looked for a door, a car, anything. My foot caught on a crack in the road and I fell on a wrecked taxi.

That was when I saw him.

A man stood alone in the middle of the street with a steel pipe in his hand and blood soaking his shirt. Three wolves were circling him.

I knew his face and his name. Caden Blackwood. But I had never spoken to him. He did not look afraid, he looked angry, like this was a fight he had expected.

The first wolf jumped. He swung the pipe and knocked it into a parked car so hard that the door folded in. The second came from the side. He ducked and hit it too. He moved faster than any man I had ever seen.

I had known brave men before. But this, this was not courage. It looked more like habit.

'What is he?'

The third wolf crept closer, low to the ground. Caden stared straight at it. The wolf stopped. Then it lowered its head until its nose touched the road.

My mouth fell open.

Caden looked at the other wolves. One at a time they went quiet and still, their gold eyes were on him, as if they were waiting for his word. He did not seem surprised, he just looked tired.

'Why are they listening to him?'

Then he looked up and found me across the street.

“Aurora!” he shouted it like he had been looking for me.

My whole body went stiff. How did he know my name?

Before I could say anything, I heard another voice. It was small and shaky, and I knew it better than my own.

“Mom!”

I turned so fast I almost fell.

Ivy was standing on the other side of the street in her yellow coat, zipped to her chin the way I always made her wear it, her cheeks were wet and dirty.  But there was no time to care. She was alive, and that was all that mattered.

I ran for her with my arms already open. I did not feel the cold or the broken glass. I thought about every night I had held her after a bad dream and told her monsters were not real. I had lied to her.

Then I heard another growl. One wolf had slipped away from the rest, and it stood right behind my daughter, its golden eyes fixed on her back, its lips pulled away from its teeth.

It was already crouching to jump, and Ivy had not even seen it.

Aurora’s POVHe said it like he had practiced it.I should have been afraid. I was not. I was angry, and I did not know where it came from.“How do you know my name?”Caden looked at me, and then he looked away at the building. “I read it somewhere.”“Where?”“I don’t remember.”“You said it like you did.”“This is private land, Dr. Blake.” He had used my title too. I had never told it to him. “You should not be here.”“Your family’s trust owns it. I found that in a county record.” I kept my voice level. “I wanted to see what a Blackwood was keeping behind a fence.”His jaw moved. “That is none of your business.”“Then why are you here?”He did not answer that either. A small wind went across the gravel and pushed the paper cup off the post. It rolled between us and stopped against my shoe.“Somebody gave you my name,” I said. “Who was it, Caden?”I had not meant to say his name. His eyes cut back to me.“Who told you mine?”“It was on the trust papers.” It was a lie, and I thought he

Aurora’s POVI did not go home that night.I sat on the floor of the small lab with my back against the freezer and the tube in my lap. At six I called my mother and asked if Ivy could stay with her one more day. She did not ask why. I put the tube in a small cooler bag with an ice pack from the lab fridge, put the bag in my purse, and washed my face in the sink. Then I took out my small notebook. The numbers from the card were still there. A line of digits I did not understand.I tried them as a phone number. Nothing. I tried them as a lab code, a bank code, a hospital room, a hotel room. Nothing. Then I thought about the card itself. It had no name on it, so it did not belong to a person. It belonged to a place. The county kept an online record of every piece of land in the city, and every piece had a long number. I typed in the digits and pressed search.A page opened. “Parcel 4471. Industrial, vacant. Built 1968. Owner: The Blackwood Family Trust.”I read the last line three times

I did not touch the coffee."I heard you on the stairs last night," he said. "Twice."So he had not been asleep. I thought of him lying there with his face to the wall while I stood in the doorway."I could not sleep.""Your dad told me you ran out in the middle of dinner. He was still in the living room when I got home.""Nina called from the hospital. It was work.""At that hour?" He said it softly, as if he was worried about me. "You carry too much. Let someone else handle it.""You were not at dinner. My family asked where you were.""The office ran late. Then I came home and you were gone. I waited up as long as I could."His office had told me he was on leave. I wanted to say it. But then he would know I had called, and he would wonder what else I had checked."I'm sorry I worried you," I sa

Aurora’s POVIt was almost midnight when I got to the lab.I put the four tubes at the back of the freezer in the small lab and locked the door. Then I went out to my car and sat there for a long time.Bishop’s message was still on my phone. I did not answer it.‘Please bring me your notes in the morning. All of them.’I had not told anyone the about the man. Or the bed number. Only Nina and I had said it out loud. So how did he know? And how did he know the man was dead before the doctor did?Nina would never tell him. I was sure of that. But somebody in that hospital had.I turned the phone face down on my knee. I did not know yet what I would give him in the morning. I only knew it would not be all of it.Then I thought of the man in the bed again. He had bowed to me.I had only seen that once before, on the street, when the wolves bowed to Caden. They did it like they had to. I had not done anything. I had not said a word.‘Why me?’And then he had said, “Forgive me.” Forgive him

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 6 The Patient in Bed Six

Aurora's POVI made it to the hospital in seventeen minutes, and I do not remember most of it.Gloria's voice came with me the whole way. 'You are lying to us, Aurora.' I turned on the radio to get rid of it. A man was reading football scores. Nothing about the fever cases. Nothing about any warnings. The city was going to bed like it was any other night, and I was driving through it at twice the speed limit.'She can wait,' I told myself. 'Ivy is safe. Nothing else matters tonight.'The last time I saw the front lobby of this hospital, people were sleeping on the floor between the vending machines, and someone had chained the doors from the inside. Tonight a woman sat at the desk eating crackers, a boy held an ice pack on his wrist, and a television played with the sound off. Nobody looked up when I ran in.Nina was waiting by the elevators in blue scrubs, with her mask pulled down under her chin and her hair coming loose. We had sat next to each other in class for four years. In all

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: The First Female Alpha   Chapter 5 Wrong Date

Aurora's POVBishop's samples came that night, just as he said. For three nights I worked alone in the small lab downstairs and slept four hours in all. The virus in them looked like the one I remembered. That should have made me feel better, and it did not, because in every sample I found one thing I did not remember. It was a small, neat marker, the same each time, as if someone had put it there on purpose.I sent him my first notes the next morning. Only half of them. I told myself that a silver pin could be a company badge, and that I had no proof of anything. On the fourth night I did what I had been putting off. I asked my family to dinner. My father sat at the head of the table with Ivy on his knee. My mother was cutting bread. And Gloria sat across from me, watching my face. She had a way of looking at me as if she was reading a sign far down the road.I waited until we had finished the soup.“I need you to listen,” I said. “Something bad is coming in a few months. And a lot
