I told myself I must be dreaming as I wiped my eyes furiously. When I blinked, he was gone— or just out of sight.

Immediately, I got out of my squatting position and quietly tiptoed down the hall. The last thing I needed now was Damien hearing a commotion here and coming up.

Internally I scolded myself for doubting the Elder. Maybe mages did or did not exist but there was one person I knew that could do what has been done on those corpses.

And he was here— for a reason I couldn't pick on.

The time for him to “refill” the poison had not yet arrived.

I rushed down the hall with speed when I was sure I was out of Damien's earshot. It was not long until I was standing where he had been.

However, there was no sign of life here. It was past midnight and all the maids were either sleeping or in the kitchens below, preparing for another day.
