Luke

What the devil was that?

He rubbed his hair and glanced over at Amiriam beside him. Her cheeks had turned pink as her fingers stroked the ring on her left hand, examining it closely.

"Is everything all right?" he asked.

Glancing over at him, she smiled shyly and stopped fidgeting. "I see you snuck into my room and took the Tiffany box."

"I actually made James do it. Bribed him with some Twizzlers. Do you like it?"

Her gaze fell to her left hand before she lifted it for closer examination. It was a huge, square-cut diamond flanked by smaller ones. Any girl would swoon over a stone that big, but she didn't fawn like he'd expect a typical girl to. She just said instead, "It's beautiful, but you shouldn't have. I was happy with the ring we talked your parents into thinking belonged to my grandma."

He knew that she was. But he wasn't comfortable with it. He'd witnessed how this arrangement had affected her. And if he was honest with himself, it had affected him, too. Teasing Amiriam b

  • RECKLESS DESIRES: THE ODEN LEGACY    Chapter Sixty-six

The grand Oden estate was unusually quiet that morning, the kind of stillness that seemed to whisper warnings through the ornate halls. Jackson Oden sat in his study, the thick scent of sandalwood mixing with the crisp rustle of paper. His desk was littered with open folders—legal documents, DNA reports, hospital files. But most pressing of all, a draft titled “Last Will and Testament.”He adjusted his glasses and stared at the document that had taken him months to consider and hours to dictate. There were too many uncertainties—questions about Luke’s true parentage still unanswered, Stacy’s sudden return, and the unrelenting whispers of betrayal threading through the family.Jackson exhaled deeply.Time to make things right. He picked up his pen and added another clause.“In the event that my death precedes the identification of Luke’s biological father, Luke Oden shall remain a legal heir and guardian of James Oden, with all rights and responsibilities entitled therein…”The ink flo

  • RECKLESS DESIRES: THE ODEN LEGACY    Chapter sixty-five

The smell of rain swept the wind through the Oden estate that morning, thick with the kind of tension that came before a storm. The mansion was still, too still, until the knock at the front door, staccato and sharp, echoed through the marble halls like a gunshot.Mrs. Oden's gaze rose from where she was seated in the drawing room, eyebrows squeezed. A maid opened the door, and Stacy stepped inside—hair immaculate, belly swollen with child, eyes shadowed but calculating. She had not been seen in months. She said without introduction, "I must speak with Jackson Oden."Mrs. Oden rose to her feet slowly, hands smoothing her ivory blouse. "You have the audacity to barge in here uninvited?"Stacy's lips twisted in a bitter smile. "I would not be here if it was not important. It is about the baby."Mrs. Oden folded her arms. "The child you claimed was Luke's, then vanished?"Stacy's jaw tightened. "I made errors. But this is not about me. The baby—my daughter—has a rare condition. Doctors s

  • RECKLESS DESIRES: THE ODEN LEGACY    Chapter sixty-four

Thursday afternoon was subdued at the community shelter. The sunlight filtered through the wood slats of the high windows, filling the reading room with a warm yellow light. In the far distance outside, children's laughter echoed across the field, mixed with the rustle of leaves.Amiriam was putting storybooks on the low shelf when James burst into the room, a frown creasing his young forehead. His steps were hesitant, not the usual bouncy gait he employed when seeking her out.She turned. "Hi, buddy. What's wrong?"James looked around, as though checking for eavesdroppers, then moved closer. His small fingers tugged at the hem of her blouse."Can we talk… just us?"Surprised, Amiriam closed the book and knelt so that they were face to face. "Of course. What's wrong?"James bit his lip. He looked uncertain, fiddling with his shirt hem. "You promise not to laugh?"She gently took his hand. "I promise.""I think." He paused, taking a deep breath. "I think I love you."Amiriam blinked.J

  • RECKLESS DESIRES: THE ODEN LEGACY    Chapter sixty-three

The morning was cool with the scent of fresh dew, a quiet that covered the estate before the world was awake. Amiriam was at the community center she had started two years ago—a public center with lines of benches and wooden tables under a roof angled off. A line of children waited in front of the reading nook, holding frayed books, their eyes eager. She rolled up the sleeves of her simple linen blouse, catching the glint of light sheen on the perspiration on her forehead. Tomorrow was packed—lesson preparation, food distribution, a local fundraiser to organize—and she had no time to spare.Which was why Luke Oden's arrival was so. troublesome. She saw him out of the corner of her eye—dark blue jeans, rolled-up sleeves, backpack slung over his shoulder. He approached slowly, almost tentatively, like a guest trying to determine if he was welcome."Morning," he said, giving a tentative smile.Amiriam didn't look up at her clipboard. "You're early.""You said volunteers arrived by eight.

  • RECKLESS DESIRES: THE ODEN LEGACY    chapter sixty-two

Morning sunlight gold filtered through the tall windows of the Oden estate, illuminating the floors of polished wood and moldings of carved stone in a gentle glow. Gone was the storm that had followed them days earlier, but its shadows remained — in the guise of unresolved questions, sorrowful grief, and cautious hope.Amiriam stood in the garden courtyard while James ran after a butterfly with a stick. Laughter thundered like a bell — pure, simple, unsoiled by the toxins of adult pain. She smiled faintly, brushing a lock of hair from her face and going down on one knee to tie the boy's shoelace."You're going to trip if you run so hard," she warned softly.James looked up, his cheeks flushing. "I won't! I'm super fast!"She smiled and pulled him into a hug, his small arms around her neck. Moments like these made the weight she carried lighter — not gone, but manageable.Steps echoed behind her, drawing closer. She didn't turn immediately; she knew who was coming.Luke."Can I join th

  • RECKLESS DESIRES: THE ODEN LEGACY    Chapter sixty-one

The suffocating stillness that filled the Oden mansion was like that which comes before the storm — thick, stifling, and full of tension. Stacy's departure had left an unseen blemish across the opulent mansion. The corridors where she had sped like a ghost were now vacant, eerily silent, but the hushed whispers and sidelong glances spoke of her presence.Amiriam stood in the stylish foyer, arms crossed stiffly over her chest, and observed the front gates close behind the black SUV which had borne Stacy away. The somber color of the vehicle concealed the figure within — Stacy's small but rounded belly unmistakable on the passenger seat.Rita and Christiana had approached her, their countenance pale but resolute."It's over," Rita breathed, breaking the silence.Amiriam smiled, but the tight knot in her stomach continued to refuse to relax. "For now," she said. "But there's something more. I feel it."Christiana's forehead creased. "What do you mean?"Amiriam could not get an answer out
