I Am Nobody

An eerie, suffocating silence gripped the plaza.

In the distance, morning traffic raged on, completely oblivious to the bloody spectacle that had just unfolded outside Redstone Tower.

The crowd of corporate elites stood frozen.

Clatter!

A woman near the glass doors dropped her iPhone. The screen shattered against the stone floor. She didn't even look down.

"Did... did anyone record that?" a young executive in a tailored suit whispered, his voice trembling violently. "I was so terrified... I forgot to hit record!"

"Record it?!" a female analyst gasped, clutching her shaking coffee cup. "I didn't even see him move! Did a homeless guy just destroy three elite mercenaries with a bloody shopping cart?!"

"Look at the pillar! He buried that giant's face in solid granite!"

Dozens of smartphones flew into the air. Hands were shaking, screens were flashing.

High above, Redstone Tower's military-grade security cameras panned back and forth, capturing every frame. Footage that would, within hours, trigger panic in intelligence agencies across the world.

The corporate spectators stared at the homeless man like he was an urban legend come to life.

He didn't give them a second glance. He knelt beside the unconscious mercenary leader. His calloused fingers moved with terrifying, surgical precision.

He wasn't searching for cash. He was searching for intel. He pulled out a sleek, matte-black communication device from the attacker's vest. No branding. No serial numbers. An encrypted, military-grade burner.

He glanced at the glowing LED screen for less than a second.

Just as I suspected, he thought, his eyes narrowing slightly. Professional operatives. Contracted out of Western Europe. Someone spent a fortune to make Evelyn Carter disappear today.

"What...?" Evelyn Carter finally found her voice.

As the icy, legendary Group GM of the Redstone Global, her mind was usually three steps ahead of every boardroom enemy in the city. But right now? Her brain had just short-circuted.

She looked at the ground. Three elite attackers. Neutralized in under forty-five seconds. And only because he was toying with the last operative.

He'd chosen mercy rather than massacre, putting them to sleep in place of permanently silencing them.

He didn't use rage, she realized, a cold shiver running down her spine. He used absolute, calculated precision.

"Ms. Carter! Oh God, Ms. Carter!" her executive assistant, David, said hysterically, crawling backward on the floor, clinging frantically to her ankle. "Are you okay?! Stay back from him!"

Evelyn ignored him. She slowly raised her cold, sharp eyes toward the stranger. For the first time, she actually looked at him.

His stance was perfectly balanced. Low center of gravity. Breathing slow, deep, and rhythmic.

No adrenaline shake. No rapid pulse.

He looked like a predator who had just finished a casual morning stroll through a warzone.

Suddenly, heavy bootsteps were heard stumping through the frontdesk lobby. Four armed private guards rushed in, guns raised, panic written across their faces.

"Nobody move! Hands up where I can see 'em!" a booming voice filled the large vestibule.

"Ms. Carter!" the lead guard yelled, his voice cracking. "Are you hurt?!"

Evelyn smoothed her tailored blazer, her voice dropping into an icy calm. "I am unharmed."

The guard swiveled his gun, training the red laser sight directly onto the homeless man's chest. "You! Drop the weapon! Did you do this?!"

The homeless man stood up casually, letting the suppressed military pistol dangle at his side. He didn't even care about the gun pointed at his heart.

"They tripped," he said, his voice flat and deadpan.

The entire plaza went dead quiet.

"Tripped?!" the analyst by the coffee cart choked out, covering her mouth to muffle a disbelieving snort.

"They... what?" The guard blinked, staring at the giant unconscious man whose head was embedded in the marble pillar. "You're telling me three armed tacticians tripped?"

The homeless man shrugged, his expression utterly indifferent. "Gravity in this city is unforgiving. Very... unforgiving."

A strange, surreal tension washed over the crowd.

In the distance, sirens broke the silence. Police cruisers, SWAT vans, and medical units were converging on the plaza. High above, a news helicopter hovered, its high-power lens locked on the scene.

The livestream had already broken the internet.

The homeless man's eyes flickered. The cold, lethal focus faded, replaced by a quiet, exhausted annoyance.

Too much noise. Too many eyes, he thought.

He engaged the safety on the suppressed pistol with his thumb and tossed it onto the unconscious mercenary's chest like trash.

"Stop right there!" A police officer pushed through the crowd, hand on his holster. "We need a statement! What's your name?!"

The homeless man stopped, turning his dull, gray eyes toward the officer. "My name won't help you," he said softly. "Or you can call me Nobody."

"Nobody?" The officer frowned. "Everyone has a name!"

"I've already forgotten mine," the man replied, a faint, ghost-like smile touching his lips. "You can check your system. Someone in there might remember it."

Without waiting for a response, he turned back to his battered, rusted shopping cart.

He bent down and began picking up aluminum cans scattered across the concrete, tossing them back into the wire basket alongside a pile of heavy construction bricks.

The crowd watched in utter shock.

He just saved the most powerful woman in New Avalon... and he's collecting twenty-cent cans?!

Evelyn watched him. Her heart pounded against her ribs.

In the business world, she could read anyone. Politicians, billionaires, assassins: she knew their prices.

But this man? Wrapped in a dirty coat patched with duct tape, pushing a squeaking cart? He was an unreadable abyss.

"Wait," Evelyn called out.

The homeless man paused, his hand resting on the rusted handlebar. He didn't turn around. He just waited.

Evelyn stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the blood-stained stone.

"Who are you... really?" she asked.

He scoffed softly, his voice lost in the rising wind. "I told you. I am Nobody."

He tightened his grip on the cart and pushed.

Squeak... squeak...

The crowd parted instantly. Police officers, armed guards, corporate moguls: everyone stepped back, clearing a path of absolute reverence.

The ragged figure stepped off the curb, merging into the sea of morning commuters.

Within seconds, the crowd swallowed him whole.

Evelyn stood alone in the shadow of her tower, staring at the empty street, her heart beating wildly for the first time in years.

Nobody... she thought, her eyes narrowing. I will find out who you are.

"The look that says you are mentally taking apart every single piece of my life and analyzing the structural integrity of the joints," Evelyn explained. Nobody offered a faint, dry smile. "I'm not taking it apart, Evelyn.""Then what are you doing?""Learning how it fits together."She considered his words for a moment, her expression softening as she looked at him. "You know... for a man who claims he has no interest in controlling my life, you are remarkably determined to understand every breath I take.""Understanding gives me options," he said quietly."And if you don't understand?""Then I am reacting.""Which you dislike.""I dislike it intensely," he admitted."Why?"Nobody looked at her, his gray eyes darkening with a heavy, professional weight. "Because by the time I am forced to react... something has already gone wrong."The room grew very quiet. The answer landed with a subtle, sobering weight, gently cutting through the casual banter of the afternoon. It served as a quie

  • RED LABEL   That Look Again

Nobody tilted his head slightly. "I wasn't aware I was taking an exam.""Consider it an ongoing assessment.""And what do I win for passing?"Evelyn pretended to consider the question, her dark eyes sparkling with warmth. "Nothing. Absolutely nothing.""Then I fail to see the operational purpose of the exercise.""I wanted to know if you were actually paying attention to me, or if you were just staring out the window thinking about security grids," she confessed quietly."I was paying attention," he said softly.Evelyn gave him a mock-suspicious look, though the affection behind it was unmistakable. "You know... having someone around who remembers every word I say might eventually become extremely annoying.""It already has," Nobody replied without missing a beat.Evelyn broke into a genuine, ringing laugh, and for the rest of the meal, the quiet tension that usually accompanied her corporate days completely melted away. For the first time since he had taken the job, they weren't deba

  • RED LABEL   A Test

"You invited me to observe," he reminded her gently."I did.""Then you should be glad.""I am," she sighed, starting to walk again, though a reluctant smile tugged at her lips. "Mostly."When they returned to Redstone Tower, the morning continued at its relentless, high-velocity corporate pace.Evelyn moved through the executive floor with the effortless, absolute authority of someone who had commanded the space for years. She stopped to speak with two department heads near the central glass corridor, smoothly altered her path to intercept an assistant carrying a physical legal file, spent nearly twenty minutes in David’s outer office hammering out a scheduling conflict, and finally vanished into her private suite.Nobody followed her movements without hovering or invading her personal space. He didn't feel the need to stand directly beside her like a rigid guard dog. Instead, he positioned himself at key vantage points, watching how the rest of the floor reacted to her presence. The

The morning began without an incident. That, Nobody decided as he stood near the edge of the glass partition in Evelyn’s private suite, was exactly what he needed. After the chaotic friction of the previous day's board meeting and his encounter with Richie Holloway, he had learned enough about Redstone’s physical environment to grasp a fundamental reality. He could not properly protect Evelyn Carter by simply reacting to obvious threats. A reactive guard was merely waiting for a trigger to be pulled. To construct an effective net around her, he needed to understand the ordinary, unremarkable shape of her life before he could determine where that ordinary life might become transparent—and ultimately predictable—to an outsider. So, rather than attempting to alter her habits or enforce restrictive new protocols, he decided to accompany her through them.He did not frame this as an operational deployment. He simply waited until she had finished scanning her morning emails, walked over to

  • RED LABEL   A Moment with Melissa

Nobody had barely taken a few steps away from Sophia's desk when Melissa appeared from the adjoining administrative corridor, carrying a slim folder against her side. She had clearly been moving between Evelyn's office and the surrounding executive section, and one glance at Nobody's expression was enough to tell her that he had been conducting his now-familiar investigation into Evelyn's habits. Melissa was Evelyn's office best friend and gossip mate, which meant she knew the woman behind the executive title in ways that formal records and security reports could never capture. She slowed as she approached him, her eyes moving briefly toward Sophia before settling on Nobody."So," Melissa said, falling into step beside him, "I hear you've been interrogating everyone on this floor about Evelyn."Nobody glanced at her. "I'm building a security profile.""I know what you're building," Melissa replied with a faint smile. "I'm asking whether you've realized that Evelyn is going to find i

David gestured toward a plush leather chair across from him, though his hands remained hovering near his desk phone. "Alright. Is this about her official itinerary? I emailed the updated itinerary to Marcus an hour ago.""I have the official itinerary," Nobody said, choosing to remain standing. His gray eyes held that steady, unreadable composure that always made corporate executives feel slightly exposed. "I need the unwritten itinerary."David frowned, a subtle line appearing between his brows. "The unwritten itinerary? Everything Evelyn does is cataloged on my primary network. I keep her calendar synchronized down to three-minute increments.""A calendar tells me where she is scheduled to be," Nobody explained, his voice low and measured. "It doesn't tell me how she acts when she gets there. I need to know her personal indicators."David let out a faint, skeptical puff of air. "Her indicators?""When she receives a phone call from an unknown or unlisted number on her private line,
