SARA'S POV

My question hung in the air and I almost forgot to snap my jaws that had dropped in disbelief back into place.

Seeing my look of astonishment, Alaric smiled, as though he had expected it. His calm was a very huge contrast to my shaken up expression and his assuredness was also very different from my disbelief.

My lips parted but I only let out a wisp of air and when I finally could get my words out, all I said was..."I'm honoured."

At that moment, that was exactly how I felt, honoure

THIRD PERSON’S POV Alyssa’s Father didn’t outrightly say who those words were meant for but because of how it was worded and the red to bring it up in the first instance, as well as judging by Alyssa’s reaction to it, Derek solved the puzzle immediately. In retrospect, Mr Ford was telling him the gala would be the perfect time and place to propose marriage to his daughter. Moreover, the way he said it made it sound like he had already decided on it and was just waiting to tell him so he could carry it out.Slowly, Derek alternated his gaze back to Alyssa who didn’t look at him.He couldn’t tell if it was because she couldn’t bear to or if it was because she didn’t want to catch his expression.Either way, she kept her eyes on her father and when Derek glanced down, he noticed how tightly wound her fingers were together.“Imagine the picture it’ll paint publicly,” Mr. Rhodes continued with a prideful town. “Two established families, two legacies merging together to become one.”Derek

THIRD PERSON’S POVThe Ford’s estate was exactly as the last time Derek was here and the last time he remembered.Nothing about its grandness nor affluent decorated vibe had changed. It was like every other house that belonged to a wealthy family, intimidating in a way that didn’t need announcement. One didn’t even have to think to know that it was a wealthy family that lived here. The tall iron gates automatically made way for him when Derek’s car approached it, operated by a security personnel who stood within a tower-like building, glancing down from above. The driveway was long and curved and shrubs and flowers, lush, green, bright, vibrant, all showing adequate care line the driveway. He got to the main entrance only to see a line of staff already waiting out front to receive him, a ritual he seemed unnecessary. It wasn’t his first time here, he knew his way around but Mrs Ford just had to make a scene each time he came here.He parked at the main entrance then got out of the car

SARA’S POV After downing the cup of tea that Derek made, which surprisingly did help with my headache, I reached for a glass of water to alleviate my thirst.Derek was gone, the next step in my day was preparing breakfast for Danielle.I still didn’t know what time it was but seeing as Derek was still home, I surmised that it was still early, not until I actually checked the time and realised that it was nearly noon.No wonder Derek had said he was going out.I didn’t just sleep in, I had slept through nearly half of the day already. My thoughts snapped to work and my face fell when I realised that I might have to call in sick or make up some excuse for my absence. Also, Danielle was supposed to be in school. Why hadn’t Derek taken her?He wasn’t here so I asked Danielle herself who said, “Mommy, Daddy said I could stay at home today,”That answered my question but it didn’t help my knotted brows. Why did he say that? Was it because of me? Because I didn’t wake up early enough?I had

SARA’S POV My head hurt when I woke up, not really bad but just enough to remind me that I had taken more glasses of wine than I should have.I had crossed my tolerance threshold and the implication was the faint ache that thrummed through my head.Slowly, I blinked, trying to adjust my vision to the flood of light in my room.It was just normal, natural lighting, and I shouldn’t have had any problem seeing nor should I have had a need to squint but my head throbbed too hard not to.My mind trailed back to the events from yesterday, to what I was supposed to be a harmless dinner with Derek. And, harmless it had been or so I thought but why was my recollection of the rest of the night so foggy?Pushing off my bed with my arms that felt like jelly, I sat up, trying to recollect the rest of the details I’d missed from last night. The last thing I could remember as laughing with Danielle at first but then, it slowly came to me.Derek had come to sit next to me, he’d helped Danielle open

THIRD PERSON’S POVThe house was quiet when they arrived.Derek pulled into the driveway then turned off the ignition but kept the headlights on.Being that everyone was out, there was no one to receive them and the quiet driveway was the kind that would spook fear in the heart of a child home alone.Every sound was amplified, from the click of the car door as he unlocked it, to the quiet jingle of his keys when he turned off the ignition. He could even make out the rustling of his clothes and when that happened, he glanced to his side, then backwards, trying to see if he had woken either of them.He hadn’t, but a couple of minutes later, Danielle stirred without the noise.Slowly, she leaned forward in her seat to take a peek out the window, rubbing at her eyes hard.“We are home?” She mumbled, voice hoarse and barely audible from sleep.Derek nodded, “Yes, we are.”He got out of the car quietly after, then headed over to the backseat, pulling the door open with equally gentle moveme

THIRD PERSON’S POV It was only a couple of minutes, he had only spent a few minutes on his phone but within those minutes, Danielle was already fully asleep, curled slightly against the cushioned seat.He hadn’t even seen when she had done that and the unamusing thing was that Sara was also asleep. He should have known when her head was slumped earlier, that she would fall asleep soon enough but at the same time, he didn’t think she actually would.Nor did he think that Danielle would fall asleep so fast too.Derek didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the sight. He stared intermittently at the both of them for a couple of minutes, confirmed that neither of them would wave up then came to a decision.Quietly, he signaled the waiter to approach with the bill, signaling for him to be quiet. Before the waiter could set it down, Derek reached for the bill folder and slid his card inside.Quickly he made payment then dismissed the man after the receipt was signed.Once the waiter was gon
