Sara stood alone in the silent kitchen long after Derek left. For a long moment, she didn't move from where she stood, against the counter, with her fingers resting on its edge.

The cabbage she had been cutting earlier sat on the board, unfinished with the knife she had been using placed next to it.

The other ingredients that needed sorting were there too, but she wasn't inclined to resume working on them.
