Chapter 1
ZOE’S POV On the flight back to Australia, sitting by the window side looking at the clear sky, all I had to think about is my cute little son–Jamie, who I had missed so terribly, his little arms around my neck, his giggles, the way he calls me mommy with his sweet voice and my twin sister Chloe, the only family I had left. My whole world revolved around these two. I had no choice but to leave Jamie behind, due to the conditions that came with my new job. It wasn't easy making that decision. When the plane landed in Australia and I walked out, I closed my eyes and breathed in, the smell of home calmed me down. One year, that seemed like ten years. That was how long I had been away from my son and sister, working tirelessly overseas. I have been counting down to the day I get to hold my little boy in my arms again and kiss him all over his face. My name is Zoe Packer. I used to be a proud office assistant to the director of Perkins group, one of the biggest companies in Australia, until the one-night stand with him that changed my life. Now I'm a single mother of a five year old boy, who used to live in Sydney with my twin sister before I left them both for a job I got outside the country. I did not tell them I was flying in to visit, I plan to surprise them and just show up at their doorstep. I smiled to myself as I pictured in my mind how the look on their faces will be when they see me today. I had planned the whole day. We'd all go to the park, then go have some ice cream at our favourite spot, spend the rest of the day at the beach side and soak in every moment I had missed. But as I waited for my luggage to be cleared at the carousel, I got bored which led me to flip through the pages of the magazine I had picked up earlier. And that was when I experienced a moment of pure astonishment. "Austin Perkins attends the royal gala with his wife, Zoe Packer." I looked at the page with my eyes wide open and yet it seemed like I wasn't seeing clearly. My heart was beating really fast. Zoe Packer? That's my name. My full name. Married to Austin Perkins? The father of my child? My stomach was upset as I continued to read. The article went on talking about their romance, and how perfect they looked together at the most talked about event of the year. There were pictures, Austin in a classic black tuxedo, standing beside a woman in a beautiful ball gown. A woman who looked just like me. Chloe. “What in the world is all this?” I said in disbelief. I grabbed my suitcase and stormed out of the airport. I took a cab and went to our apartment in Melbourne. But another shock was waiting for me there. I was knocking on the door when our neighbour, Mrs. Harrison came out of her room and saw me. “Oh, Chloe, you're back? It's good to see you again.” She said to me, smiling. “Uh..Excuse me? I’m not..” I started but she cut me off. “Zoe moved out some months ago. She packed up and left right after she got married. Some rich guy in Sydney. But I'm surprised you're here looking for your twin sister.” She said, frowning. I felt the ground shift beneath me. “Um..I'm sorry ma'am. Did she leave a forwarding address or anything? Mrs. Harrison shook her head. “No, dear. But I saw her leaving with the little one. He couldn’t stop talking about moving to a bigger house and getting a bigger room. He looked happy.” Happy. My son. With Chloe. Living a life that she had no right to live. My life! “You mean you didn't know your twin sister was getting married? She didn't tell you?” she asked, sounding surprised and worried. I could not answer Mrs. Harrison’s question. Who would believe I had no idea my own twin sister was getting married or moving out of the city with my son? I stood there, lost in thought. Trying to make sense of everything. Chloe wouldn’t do this to me. Would she? She knew all I had been through for the past five years. She was there for me when I found out I was pregnant. Then a different thought struck my mind. Wait a minute… Was this the reason Chloe had been acting strange for some months now. She would give excuses to get off the phone, avoided video calls with me and didn't let me speak with Jamie as often as I used to. She told me she was trying to get a job, which I found really hard to believe. But not in my wildest dream did I think it was because she was planning something like this behind my back. So, she got married to Austin? How on earth did that happen? Was this what she planned to do all along? My head was spinning with ideas and questions I had no answers to. “Is everything alright, Chloe?” Mrs. Harrison asked, looking closely at my face. I turned to look away, my vision became unclear, fighting the tears threatening to fall down my cheeks. I couldn’t believe this. My twin sister had stolen my identity, my son, my son’s father, my entire life. “Thank you, Mrs Harrison. I have to go.” I said, not waiting for her to respond. My hands were made into fists as I walked out of the apartment, my chest burning with betrayal. I picked out my phone and dialled Chloe's number as soon as I got into a cab. It rang. Once. Twice. Then she picked. “Hello?” “Chloe.” I swallowed hard. “What the hell is going on? How the hell are you now Austin’s wife? And I just left the apartment, I was told you moved out, with Jamie?” Silence. Then the click sound. She hung up. Oh she didn't just hang up on me. I called her back. She didn't answer. I called her back again. But it went to voicemail. I kept sending her text messages till I arrived at the hotel but she didn't respond to any of them. An hour later, I was pacing in my hotel room, my head spinning with ideas and questions. When I heard a notification sound on my phone. I quickly grabbed it from the bed. Chloe: I'll come see you in Melbourne tomorrow. There's no way I'm waiting till tomorrow. I'm going to Sydney. I'm getting to the root of this today.OWEN'S POV I didn’t waste another second after telling Zoe to get ready. We left the office together, Chloe sandwiched between two of the security guards until we reached the car waiting out front. I gestured toward the passenger seat.“Up front,” I ordered.Chloe opened her mouth to object but I silenced her with a look. She sat stiffly beside the driver. Zoe and I took the back.I took out my phone as the door closed. “Detective Blake, someone hacked into my account last night and has been stealing money from it. I can't give you the full details right now. But Chloe claims she knows who and can take us to him now. So I'll need your help.”Blake’s voice crackled through the speaker. “Do you trust her words?”I met Chloe's eyes in the mirror. “Not really. But I need to check it out.”Blake paused for a second. “Alright then. Text me the route. We’ll follow in a separate car. And don’t let Chloe out of your sight.”“Wouldn’t dream of it,” I muttered, ending the call.I leaned forward
AUSTIN’S POV It was painfully quiet.I stood in the living room, looking at where Jamie’s toy box was. His laughter was gone. Even Zoe’s scent was fading from the air. They had moved out. Just like that.I've never felt so empty, not even when I didn't know I had a son. Loneliness felt normal then. But this… this was a punishment.I thought about this morning, Jamie hugged me tightly but he didn’t say a word. He didn’t look at me when Zoe led him out, he just held her hand tightly. And Zoe… calm. Too calm. She’d told me I could call Jamie anytime, that I could pick him up for the weekend like it was nothing more than a school arrangement. She’d said it like she was going to do me a favour. She said it without doubt. It was over.I paced, fists clenched. But how could she end it so easily? After everything I did for her while she was recovering? After everything I sacrificed to make sure she and Jamie had a stable life?A bitter laugh escaped me. Owen. Always Owen.Zoe didn't mention
ZOE'S POV Soft sunlight filled the room but it felt heavy to me. The day has finally arrived. No more delaying. No more pretending we were still a family in the same house.Jamie held me close as I finished. He still has tears in his eyes. He's been watching me silently.“Can't we stay?” he whispered.I got choked up. I knelt down to look at him, smoothing his hair. “Sweetheart, you’re not leaving your dad. You’ll still see him. Weekends, holidays… whenever you want to talk to him, we’ll call. Okay? This is just… us living in a different house.”He nodded, but seemed lost, just wanting things to go back to normal. My heart broke again.Footsteps came from behind. Austin stood there, tense, eyes red from lack of sleep. He was silent for a moment, looked at Jamie, then me.“Hey, buddy” Austin said softly, bending down. His voice was softer than I’ve heard in days. “Come here.”Jamie hugged him and Austin hugged him tightly. “Promise me you're going to be a good boy for your mom.” Austi
AUSTIN’S POVI heard them coming before I saw them. Zoe guided him down slowly. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Jamie, his hand clung to Zoe’s. His face was red from crying, but when he saw me, he held Zoe tighter .That… hurt. More than I was ready for.I wanted to hug him and assure him that nothing was going to change. But Jamie won't look at me.And I felt that same pain again, for the first time since the day Chloe brought him to me, about two years ago. Thinking of the years we'd been apart. Years stolen from me.I put on a smile and crouched as they stepped off the stairs. “Hey, buddy” I said quietly, hoping to reach him. “You okay now?”Jamie hid his face and shook his head. Zoe whispered, comforting him. She looked drained. Seeing them like that hurt me deeply, while I stood there feeling useless.“Jamie” I stepped closer and tried again. “you know I love you, right?”He nodded but he still didn’t meet my eyinto He leaned into Zoe, clinging to her like he would lose her if
ZOE'S POV The house had weighed more in the past few days. I have been a silent presence in Austin’s home since the truth came out.We were still together in the same house, but the distance between us was no longer invisible.I knew what I had to do. I had to tell Jamie. It was the thought that kept me awake at night, and what made me feel nervous whenever he touched me.I had been putting it off because I wasn’t sure if I was strong enough to break my own child’s heart. But tonight, I couldn’t wait anymore. He lay on the living room floor, crayons scattered everywhere, humming as he scribbled.Austin was by the window, pretending to check his phone but I felt him watching me. He hadn’t tried to bring up the fight again, though his desperation hung in the silence.I sat down beside Jamie."Just a minute, sweetie. Mommy needs to speak with you."Austin's head jerked up from across the room. He mouthed with urgency, low and intense, "Don't, Zoe."Jamie looked at us in shock.I glanced
CHLOE'S POVI hated being here, at the table with Nick in this dirty café, acting like I had options. He had that look again—the one that made me feel like a pawn on his board.“You want me to walk into Owen’s house?” I asked, folding my arms tight. “With guards, with cameras… do you think they don’t notice who goes in and out?”Nick sat back, looking relaxed like it was easy. “You’re not just anyone, Chloe. They won’t see you. They’ll see Zoe. Sweet, harmless Zoe who lived there once. The woman they’d trust without a second thought.”I felt uneasy when he said her name. My sister’s face. A disguise I could wear when I need to..“And what exactly do you expect me to do when I get inside?” I forced the words out, trembling. “Smile for the cameras while I rob the place?”“Not rob,” Nick corrected smoothly, sliding a small black USB toward me across the table. “Just a little… data borrowing. You plug this into Owen’s laptop. The software does the work. All I need is what’s inside.”I sta
