Viktor wiped a blade clean on a rag and glanced at me. “Who were you on the call with?” “Aiden,” I said, tucking my phone away. Viktor’s brows rose. “What did he say?” I shrugged, my voice flat. “Since she won't talk, kill her.” The moment the words left my mouth, Ashley lost it. Behind the gag, she let out a muffled, frantic scream, her body thrashing against the ropes. Her eyes were wide, streaming with tears, but I just rolled my eyes. I’d seen her play the victim too many times; this girl was unbelievably fake. “Stop moving, or this will be a lot more messy than it needs to be,” I told her, my hand moving to my holster. “Or do you want to tell us where Ivanov is?” She only sobbed louder, the sound echoing off the cold warehouse walls. It was pathetic and I didn't have the patience for it.
THREE MONTHS LATER… Aiden’s POV I leaned against the kitchen island, watching Lily head down the stairs. I couldn't help the scoff I let out. “There’s no way you're going to school in that.” She rolled her eyes immediately. “Why? Mom thinks it’s cute.” I looked over at Mom, who was busy packing Lily’s breakfast for school. She just raised her hands in a surrender, refusing to get caught in the middle. I turned back to my sister. “Where’s the rest of the shirt?” “It’s cropped, Aiden. It’s what everyone wears nowadays.” “Well, you’re not wearing it,” I interrupted. Mom passed me my own breakfast, and I caught her eye with a grateful smile before turning my focus back to lecturing Lily. My phone started vibrating in my pocket, cutting me off. “Do not piss me off this morning, Lily. Go change.” She groaned loudly, her footsteps heavy as she marched back up the stairs. I pulled the phone out and answered. “Hello? Aiden speaking.” “Aiden, it’s me,” Luka’s cold voice came through th
Aiden’s POVThe stench of death was engraved to my skin, and no amount of scrubbing would ever get it out.I stood at the sink, gripping the cold porcelain so hard my knuckles went white. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Even after icy water rushed over them, I couldn’t feel the temperature. All I saw was the faint pink swirl of Nikolai’s blood disappearing down the drain. After rescuing Nikolai, we couldn't take him to any hospital in Moscow, worried that they secretly worked for Ivanov. So, I had to operate on him.My fingers had been inside his skull just hours ago. I’d held his brain in my hands while it pulsed weakly under the lights.I saved his life. At least… I think I did.I peeled off the surgical gloves with a snap and tossed them into the bin. My hands were red and swollen, my mind numb. I stared at them for a long moment before forcing myself to move. When I finally pushed through the doors of the safehouse operation room, Luka was there. Our expressions were pretty much
Nikolai's POV I didn’t need to look to know who'd entered the room.I forced my eyes open, even though they burned, to see a shadow step into the dim light, his polished shoes stopping just inches from my blood. Then he laughed cruelly.“Well, well…” he drawled. “Look at you.”I dragged in a shaky breath and tilted my head just enough to meet his gaze. “Hello… son,” Roman spat spitefully.Something in me should have reacted. I should feel anger, rage,... hate. But I was too weak to feel anything. I let out a soft breath of air in an exhale.“What do you want, old man?”For a second, I was met with silence, till I felt his fist brutally slam into my jaw.My head snapped to the side, pain exploding through my skull. He took another hit directly to my ribs and I felt blood flood my mouth.Again.Again.Again.Each blow sent shockwaves through my already battered body, but I refused to scream. My vision flickered, black creeping in at the edges, and I barely held onto my consciousness.
Aiden’s POV My chest has been racing for the last three hours. Every time I thought we were getting closer to finding Nikolai, it pounds even faster. With the tracker, we made our way to a private mansion. It was completely made of black stone with long dark windows. Strangely, it made my neck prickle in discomfort. “What—“ I caught myself, dropping to a whisper. “Why'd you stop?” Luka raised one hand signaling for me to shut up. Then he pointed. I followed his finger toward the mansion and felt my stomach do something unpleasant. “There,” Luka murmured. “What’s there?” My voice came out shaky. “That's where he is?” His eyes hadn't left the building. “The tracker's pinging from inside.” Nikolai is in there. I exhaled slowly. “Okay. So what now? We just — what? Sneak in? Or walk up and knock?” Luka turned his head and looked at me with an annoyed expression. “Do you ever actually listen to what comes out of your mouth?” he muttered. “I'm being serious,” I hissed back. “I do
Nikolai's POV Viktor parked the SUV in the shadows, a few blocks from Ivanov’s private house. The rest of my men were already waiting, hiding in the trees nearby. I stepped out and walked straight to them. Viktor joined me, his face as hard as mine. “Is everyone clear on the plan?” I asked quietly. They all nodded. We all understood what was at stake. Up ahead, Ivanov’s house sat behind high walls and heavy security. It looked impossible to enter, but we had one advantage — surprise. If we moved fast and stayed quiet, we could take them. “Let’s go,” I said. We moved like shadows. When the first guards appeared, my men took them down silently. My heart pounded as we slipped closer. ‘This has to work. I can’t let Roman win.’ I reached the side entrance and gave Viktor a nod. “I’m going down to the basement to find Ashley,” I told him. “You and the others clear the floors.” Viktor looked at me, a brotherly warmth in his eyes. For a second, emotions waged inside us— trus
Nikolai's POVI slammed through the glass door into the gym, the cool blast of AC hitting me like a slap, but at least it matched the ice in my veins. The place was empty, thank God: I can peacefully punch the shit out of the punching bags around.I shrugged off my jacket, tossing it over a bench w
Aiden's POVA WEEK LATER... I don't know what the fuck I'm supposed to do. It's been a week since that shitshow in the gym, and Nikolai has been ghosting me harder than a bad Tinder date.At first, I figured he was just processing. I thought that maybe something's going on with him, but it's fine,
Hailey's POV I pushed through the gym door to look for Aiden. Even though he said I should go back, I really really want to have lunch with him.My heart was still fluttering from the way he had defended me in class—and I wonder if, maybe he's finally feeling a spark between us too? I've accepted
Aiden's POV I clicked to the final slide, the screen glowing with our conclusion bullet point of Doppler ultrasound in vascular diagnostics. Hailey had actually nailed the animations here. I glanced at her; she was standing rigid next to me at the front of the lecture hall, her hands clasped tigh
