"Remember to breathe deep and let me handle the interrogation when those doors open," Gideon advised in a low voice that resonated through the confined space of the ascending elevator. He watched Maren clutch the sleeping infant against her chest while her knuckles turned stark white from the immense pressure. She nodded in absolute silence as the polished metal doors slid apart with a soft chime to reveal a sprawling penthouse living room.

Five older men in dark bespoke suits sat around a massive glass table with expressions of profound skepticism carved into their faces. They represented the generational wealth of his grandfather and they held the power to strip Gideon of his entire empire with a single vote. Maren stepped out of the elevator and felt the hostile weight of their stares attempting to crush her spirit into dust.

"You expect us to believe you eloped with a destitute woman hours before a major corporate transition Gideon?" the lead executor demanded without offering a basic greeting. He stood up and adjusted his wire rimmed glasses while examining Maren from head to toe with blatant distaste. "This arrangement reeks of a desperate legal maneuver designed to secure your inheritance check and bypass the trust regulations."

Maren felt her heart hammer a frantic rhythm against her ribs as she shifted the baby in her tired arms. She opened her mouth to defend herself but the sheer intimidation of the room paralyzed her vocal cords. Gideon stepped forward and positioned his massive frame between Maren and the judgmental men like an impenetrable fortress of muscle and rage.

"I expect you to respect my wife and address her with the deference my family name commands," Gideon countered with lethal calm. He did not raise his voice but the sheer dominance radiating from his posture forced the older man to take a step back. "We fell in love away from the public eye because I refuse to subject my family to the toxic media circus you men feed upon."

The lead executor crossed his arms and let a mocking smirk touch the corners of his mouth. "A beautiful sentiment but you lack any documented history together prior to this morning," the man pressed with ruthless persistence. "You are asking the board to hand over billions of dollars based on a marriage certificate printed an hour ago."

Colm stood near the elevator and opened his briefcase to retrieve a stack of forged background documents. He handed the files to the men while maintaining a blank professional expression that gave nothing away. "The timeline of their romance is unusual but the legal standing of this marriage is ironclad and immune to board interference," Colm stated with supreme confidence.

The executors ignored the paperwork and continued to glare at the couple standing in the center of the opulent room. Panic threatened to swallow Maren whole as she realized they were losing the psychological battle before it even began. Gideon turned toward her and saw the raw terror swimming in her wide hazel eyes.

He reached out and pulled her flush against his chest with an unexpected possessiveness that shattered the cold air in the room. The sheer physical electricity of the contact sent a massive jolt of heat straight through their bodies. Maren gasped into his shoulder as an intense undeniable current of desire hijacked her entire nervous system.

Gideon felt his own breath catch as the primal need to protect her eclipsed every rational thought in his brilliant mind. He tangled his fingers in her auburn hair and held her against him while the rest of the world faded into nothingness. Maren closed her eyes and melted into his solid warmth as the baby slept undisturbed between them.

The skeptical lawyers watched the profound intimate exchange and felt their collective doubts begin to fracture under the weight of such raw emotion. They were trained to spot corporate deception but the chemical reaction they just witnessed was impossible to fabricate. The lead executor gathered his thick stack of files and shoved them into his briefcase with a heavy sigh of defeat.

"My personal life is not up for board debate and my devotion to this woman is absolute," Gideon murmured while his gaze remained locked on Maren. He pulled back just enough to let the executives witness the genuine fire burning between them. "I signed the papers and claimed the child which fulfills the exact requirements of the inheritance clause."

The room fell into a suffocating silence as the men exchanged uneasy glances with one another. The lead executor cleared his throat and buttoned his suit jacket while preparing to concede the argument. "The board accepts the marriage certificate and acknowledges your new legal dependents Gideon," the older man stated with obvious reluctance.

Maren let out a shuddering breath of relief thinking they had survived the agonizing gauntlet of billionaire politics. She stepped out of the embrace but Gideon kept a firm hand anchored on the small of her back to steady her shaking frame. The lead executor walked toward the elevator but stopped just before stepping into the metallic cabin.

He turned around and leveled a piercing stare at the exhausted couple standing in the center of the room. A cruel calculating gleam replaced the frustration in his eyes as he delivered his final devastating mandate. "A paper marriage is not enough to secure the final asset transfer next month," the man stated with a dark warning in his tone.

"You will share the master suite exclusively starting tonight to prove this union is authentic in every regard," the executor commanded while the elevator doors began to close. "The household staff will monitor your habits and they will report back to me if you spend a single night apart.”

Never build a fortress around a wounded heart unless you are prepared to watch the walls trap you inside with a predator. The sprawling penthouse became a tense battleground of avoided glances and unspoken desire over the next twenty four hours. Maren navigated the pristine rooms with deliberate caution to avoid the magnetic pull of the billionaire tracking her every movement. The memory of his dark confession hung heavy in the air and made every shared space feel dangerously small. Gideon remained inside the secure wing working on his corporate strategies while giving her the physical distance she demanded. He did not issue any new commands or attempt to close the gap between them after their explosive confrontation. The quiet atmosphere felt less like a truce and more like a predator waiting in the shadows for the perfect moment to strike. Maren found herself looking for his towering frame every time she entered a room despite her fierce desire to maintain her independence. She ha

  • RUTHLESS   Chapter 34

The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the quiet glass castle like a sudden clap of thunder. Maren pulled her hand back while her fingers burned from the fierce impact against his hard jaw. Gideon did not blink or turn his head away from the strike. He accepted the physical blow with a chilling stillness that made her racing heart skip a vital beat. The tall billionaire stood his ground and absorbed her fury without displaying a single ounce of retaliation. A faint red mark bloomed across his tanned skin to mirror the intense violence of her fractured emotions. "You have every right to strike me for making a unilateral decision regarding your body and your public image," Gideon murmured in a dangerously calm tone. He took a slow step forward and closed the tiny gap she had tried to create between them. "I will stand here and let you break your hands against my chest if it helps you process the anger you feel right now." "I do not want to strike you again because physical violen

"You stripped away my dignity and broadcast my deepest vulnerability to millions of strangers without asking for a single ounce of my consent," Maren shouted the exact moment the heavy metallic doors of the private elevator slid open. Gideon stepped into the pristine foyer wearing the tailored suit he wore during the televised broadcast, though the dark confidence radiating from his broad shoulders felt far heavier now. He walked toward the center of the spacious living room with slow predatory strides while his slate gray eyes locked onto her flushed face. "I secured the permanent safety of your family and destroyed the man who tortured your sister for years," Gideon countered with a booming voice that vibrated through the high ceilings of the penthouse. "I used the exact weapon required to dismantle his public narrative before a judge could issue a warrant to remove the boy from this home. You get to keep your nephew because I made a tactical decision on that courthouse plaza." "Y

A profound silence fell over the crowded concrete plaza as hundreds of journalists opened the digital file delivered straight to their mobile devices. The chaotic shouting faded into a dense quiet while the glowing screens reflected against their stunned faces. Maren watched the television broadcast with her pulse roaring in her ears as the media digested the secret weapon Gideon had just unleashed. "What kind of forged document did you just send to these reporters to save your failing reputation," Desmond demanded while trying to look over the shoulder of a nearby cameraman. "You cannot distract the public from a sworn witness testimony with more corporate lies and fabricated paperwork." "I did not send them paperwork because reading legal clauses will never convince a room full of skeptics," Gideon replied with a dark satisfaction resonating in his chest. "I sent them undeniable visual evidence of what happens when my wife and I are alone behind closed doors." Maren leaned closer

How much money does it take to buy the silence of a man who swore an oath to protect your family? Maren watched the television screen in total disbelief as the disgraced guard adjusted the microphone and glared at the billionaire standing mere feet away. The man she had tried to protect from termination just days ago was now the very weapon Desmond planned to use to sever her from her nephew forever. "I worked inside that penthouse and I saw the truth behind closed doors," the former guard declared to the sea of flashing cameras and shouting journalists. "They pretend to be a loving couple for the cameras but they sleep in separate bedrooms and barely speak to each other when the public is not watching. Mister Cole fired me because I knew too much about their fraudulent arrangement and he wanted to silence my testimony." The press corps erupted into a frenzy of hostile questions and accusations that drowned out the ambient noise of the city plaza. Journalists who had praised Gideon

"Turn the volume up right now before he destroys everything we fought so hard to protect," Maren demanded with a trembling voice while her eyes remained glued to the glowing television screen. She clutched the edge of the velvet sofa as Desmond approached the wooden podium with a triumphant smirk plastered across his handsome face. Gwen scrambled to grab the remote control and amplified the sound just as the corrupt billionaire tapped the microphone to command the attention of the swarming journalists. "Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I stand before you today to expose a massive fraud perpetrated against the family court system and the general public," Desmond announced in a booming voice that echoed across the municipal steps. He held a thick stack of papers high in the air for the flashing cameras to capture the bold legal text printed on the front page. "Gideon Cole claims to be a devoted husband, but I possess the physical contract proving his sudden marriage is nothing more t
