Mason's face went rigid.

Almost on instinct, he grabbed the invitation from my hand and read it over again and again.

Then he tossed it onto the table with a cold laugh.

"Enough.

"This is just another stunt to make me give in, isn't it?

"I'll admit it.

"For a second, you almost had me fooled."

I didn't say a word.

The doctors and nurses rushed in.

I helped them lift my mom back onto the bed, then followed the doctor out of the room.

As I passed him, Mason grabbed my arm on instinct.
