Chapter 1

My nephew, Jason Wheeler, had just been accepted into Thornbridge High, the city's most prestigious high school.

A few days before school started, my sister, Esther, showed up at my door with him.

The moment I saw them, I came out of a daze. The remnants of my memories in my past life reminded me that I had been given another chance at life.

I was back to the exact day my nephew first stepped into my house.

Half an hour before they arrived, I immediately called my in-laws and explained everything to them, asking them to play along with my act.

When my husband, Daniel, heard that Jason was staying over, he thought nothing of it. "It's just a kid living here. Why are you making a big deal over this?"

"This isn't a sleepover," I snapped. "We'll have to look after him for three years. He will be our responsibility. His parents don't plan to handle anything. I'm just his aunt. I can't take this on!"

I added, "Just don't speak later. Let me do the talking."

My in-laws agreed. "Eva is right. Henry is in his senior year, and it's a stressful time for him. Another child under the roof might affect him. If you don't understand that, just shut up!"

Daniel instantly shut up.

When Esther arrived with Jason and bags upon bags of luggage, she was stunned to see that my in-laws were there, too.

She smiled and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Arnold, I didn't know you were here! I'm sorry to bother you!"

She then turned to me and said, "Eva, I was thinking of letting Jason stay here. He got into Thornbridge High, which is close to you. His father and I work out of town, so we'd be relying on you."

Esther then stuffed a wad of bills in my hand, saying, "You know us. We're not educated people. In our family, only you and Daniel are the educated ones. I feel relieved to have Jason living with you."

She added quickly, "He doesn't eat much!"

That was what she said in our past life, too. That thousand dollars was supposed to cover everything. Jason refused to live on campus, and I had to bend over backward to protect his feelings. Out of respect and afraid of confrontation, I accepted.

What did I get in return? A nephew who bit the hand that raised him. Three years of living the good life, yet he blamed it all on me.

Hearing what Esther said at that moment, I did not accept the wad of bills.

"Esther, come on. We're family. We don't talk about money. He can stay over for a few days. Tomorrow, I'll help him register for the dorms. This money should be for his living expenses! A thousand a month is more than enough for a high schooler!"

Esther was a little taken aback.

While she was in a daze, I patted Jason on the shoulder and said, "Thornbridge High has great facilities and good food! Your mother loves you very much, so you have to work hard and make her proud, okay?"

I added, "Your cousin goes there, too. He'll look out for you!"

Esther was just about to say something when my mother-in-law, Mary, chimed in, "Yes. Jason has done well for himself to get into Thornbridge High. The teachers there are responsible, and living on campus is really convenient. You don't have to worry. He can come home for dinners on the weekends. That would be perfect."

Esther's smile stiffened.

I thought that it would be enough and that she would back down, but she did not.

She said, "You've misunderstood me. I don't want him to stay in the dorms. The fees add up over the years, you know, so I was thinking–"

Before she could finish, I immediately pulled her to the side and said, "Esther, my in-laws are living with me. We don't have space here."

"It's fine. Jason can sleep on the couch!"

I deliberately raised my voice. "How could he sleep on the couch? Esther, you'll hurt the kid's self-esteem. You'll make it seem like he is living under somebody else's roof."

I pressed on, "The dorms in Thornbridge High are excellent. Trust me. Spending a few extra thousand would mean better sleep for Jason. He would have easy access to the teachers for help as well. Don't be foolish!"

My son, Henry, chimed in, "Yeah, Aunt Esther. Our dorm supervisors all graduated from top universities. It’s way better than any extra classes outside."

At that, Jason finally said, "Mom, just listen to Aunt Eva. You don't understand these things."

I snickered."No wonder Jason grew up to be who he is–the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!"He lives in the dorms throughout the week and stays with me during the weekend. Tell me, where did I ever wrong him for him to hurt my son that way?"Enough, Esther. From now on, our families are done. Make him write a formal apology. If he needs to be detained, then that's that."Daniel and the others rushed over soon after. Seeing how furious I was, he tried to pull me aside."Jason's eyes look a little strange. Don't push him too far; revenge cuts both ways. We've got everything we need. Henry's exams are over, too. Let it go."In the end, under Esther's nonstop begging and Jason's tearful breakdown, I agreed to settle for 30 thousand. This time, I did not hesitate.I used the money to book a graduation trip for my son. The moment his exams ended, I took him traveling.I told Daniel to sell the house, too. We moved away and no longer wished to have any contact with Esther and Ja

Henry replied, "No, I'm fine."Hey, why don't you stay at home and read? I'll be back after the exams!"Jason's jittery state was even more of a confirmation for me that something was off with that milk. After Henry's exam, I sent him to a hotel nearby to stay. I even got my mother-in-law and husband to stay with him.Daniel was no doubt stunned after he heard what I had to say. "Are you sure? How could Jason be so scheming?""I had taken the milk to get it checked, and yes, the milk was spiked with laxatives. He can no longer stay with us."Look after Henry for these two days."…When Jason did not see Henry return, he was a little surprised, yet also delighted. "Aunt Eva, where's Henry? Is he unwell?""Are you hoping he's unwell? He's doing fine. He'll just be staying with our relatives for the next two days, since it's closer."I made a meal for Jason and heated some milk for him. Jason was a little suspicious, but he thought nothing much of it.Once he drank the milk, I

The victim had great grades and was friendly with everyone at school, see. Jason had just arrived when he ended up in huge trouble. What awaited Jason in the future? Being isolated by everyone might make him even sadder, but I could not care less. All I wanted was for my Henry to be alright. That weekend, Jason did not come back. Apparently, he said that coming back to my place was a waste of time. He had to catch up on his studies, so he did not return. That was better for me.I bought snacks and picked my son up. I did not leave anything for Jason.Henry was a little surprised. "Mom, you used to always buy him things. Why did you stop?""You're my son. You're the one I should buy for. He has his parents! Why should I care about him?"Henry hugged me excitedly. "Mom, you're the best!"You know…I couldn't stand him for the longest time. You don't know this, but before, whenever he was at our place, he'd always ask for things. He'd say things like how he had never played with an

Esther and Robert ended up beating Jason there and then.I did not move one bit, in case they ended up hitting me as well.Esther beat Jason while looking at me, so I said, "Esther, enough. Stop hitting him already."The police officer intervened and stopped the beating. "I got you here to work things out, not to hit him! You're in the police station! Behave! Just apologize and compensate!"The moment Esther heard that compensation was required, she was furious. She turned to look at the victim's parents. Seeing the victim's head wrapped in bandages, she mocked, "Who the hell knows if this is real or fake?"The victim's parents fumed. "I knew you wouldn't be reasonable. Since this matter can't be settled, I'll see you in court!"Esther started to worry. Jason stood by the side, saying nothing.I said to her, "Esther, come on. They're willing to settle privately. You have to think about Jason's future. If he had made a mistake, get him to admit it and apologize. If compensation i

In my previous life, I was so furious that I trembled.Jason had added, "Aunt Eva, it's just for clout. Once I make enough money, the people online will just forget about me. You won't lose anything. It's just words. It can't hurt you anyway!"That family took advantage of me, and I ended up dying due to depression. Daniel got fired from his job, too.Henry, on the other hand, got bullied in college. In the end, he had no choice but to move away to the countryside. None of my family ended up well, all thanks to Jason.…No more!I consulted with the lawyer once more. If the victim's parents press charges, Jason might be arrested. If he ended up in prison, he would surely be expelled from school.I texted Esther once more and told her about the severity of this matter, in case she blamed it on me again.Esther did not reply to me until that evening. [Eva, don't let them intimidate you. It's a child's fight. It's not that serious. So what if there have been minor injuries? Let

I hung up on Esther. Then, I contacted the lawyer.I found out through the lawyer that Esther had yelled at Jason on the phone, but not once did she bring up the matter of compensation. The lawyer found her hard to deal with as well. Jason's teacher had called Esther multiple times to head to school, but Esther refused. She kept saying that she was busy and that her pay would be docked if she took time off. She also said that it was only normal that children got into fights. She told the teacher to 'relax'.When Esther found out that the classmate had been beaten up so badly on the head that he had been hospitalized, she hung up the call right away. All these happened while Jason was next to his teacher. His face flushed a violent shade of red with fury.I told Daniel not to handle this. We would pay for the lawyer just to avoid getting into this mess ourselves. That Friday, I picked Jason up from school. He returned home to see two pieces of luggage by the door.Since I was pu
