Chapter 2

Author: Buff Aurora
When I came home the next day, I found that the entire house had been transformed.

Cameras had been installed everywhere, lining the hallways, covering the living room, and even monitoring the area outside my study. Their red indicator lights blinked like countless eyes, watching our every move.

Frowning, I turned to Jason, who was busy directing the workers installing the cameras. "What exactly is going on here?"

Jason folded his arms and answered as though he had every right to do whatever he pleased. "I'm just protecting myself in case someone in this house tries to hurt me. After all, I've gotten in the way of certain people's interests."

I rubbed my forehead helplessly. "Jason, this house already has the most advanced security system in all of Aurelia, with security guards patrolling around the clock. There's really no need to install all these cameras."

"Of course, you'd say that. You're the one benefiting from the current arrangement," Jason sneered. "Mom and Dad have already agreed to this. What right does an adopted son like you have to object?"

My adoptive parents stood off to the side, looking deeply uncomfortable.

Mom gently tugged at my sleeve and lowered her voice, her tone almost pleading. "Daniel, Jason says he was bullied terribly at the orphanage, and he's still afraid of getting hurt. He doesn't feel safe yet. Try to be a little more understanding with him."

Looking at Mom's graying hair and the guilt in her eyes, I sighed and decided not to say anything more.

But I never imagined Jason's paranoia would reach such an outrageous level.

…

That evening, just as I was getting ready for bed, a sudden scream rang out from the bathroom, followed a moment later by the heavy thud of something hitting the floor.

My adoptive parents and I rushed into the bathroom, where we found Jason lying on the floor, soaked from head to toe and convulsing. A security camera lay beside him, still spitting sparks.

He'd actually installed a camera in the bathroom, too!

To make matters worse, it was a cheap, shoddy product that had shorted out after getting wet, exposing him to an electrical current.

The ambulance arrived with its sirens blaring, and Jason was rushed to the emergency room. Fortunately, we'd found him in time. He'd suffered only a mild electric shock and a fright, and his life had never been in danger.

But the first thing Jason did when he regained consciousness was point at me and scream, "He's trying to kill me! He's trying to kill me!"

The doctors and nurses in the room froze in shock.

My adoptive parents hurried over and grabbed him by the shoulders. "Jason, don't say things like that! Daniel was the one who called the ambulance."

"It was him!" Jason shouted, his eyes bloodshot and his face twisted with rage as he glared viciously at me. "I just installed that camera! How could it suddenly start leaking electricity? He must have tampered with it! He's afraid I'll catch him doing something he's not supposed to, so he tried to electrocute me to death."

Still screaming accusations, he grabbed his phone and called 911, demanding that the police arrest me and throw me in jail.

However, after inspecting the scene and conducting a technical assessment, the police quickly reached their conclusion. The security camera was a cheap, uncertified product that had been installed improperly, and moisture had caused a short circuit and electrical leakage. No one else was responsible.

Before leaving, one of the officers even took the time to lecture Jason.

"Kid, it's good to be cautious, but installing a surveillance camera in a bathroom? That's not just dangerous; it's an invasion of privacy, too. Maybe you should stop watching so much nonsense on the Internet."

Jason's face turned red, then pale.

Dad patted him on the back, trying to soothe him. "It's all right. It's nothing. It was just a misunderstanding. Jason, let's not install any more of those things, okay? Daniel is a good person. He'd never hurt you."

Jason lowered his head, but he continued glaring at me from beneath his brows, his eyes full of resentment. His expression made his thoughts perfectly clear: "You got lucky this time. Next time, you won't get off so easily."

I shook my head and walked out of the hospital room.

I even had my secretary arrange a private VIP room for Jason, with the bill charged directly to my card. After all, why should I hold a grudge against a kid seven years younger than me? I figured that after a few days of living together, he'd eventually realize I wasn't after anything that belonged to him.

But I never expected him to harbor so much malice toward me.

Jason spent the night at the police station. Since the incident wasn't considered particularly serious and Mom pleaded on his behalf, he wasn't held for long. The police gave him a stern warning and a lengthy lecture before finally letting him go. But by the time he walked out of the station, his world had changed completely. He was no longer the long-suffering biological heir who'd supposedly been robbed of his rightful place. Instead, he'd become the internet's favorite laughingstock: a delusional wannabe rich kid and a new breed of beggar.Mom and I brought Dad home from the hospital, and at Mom's insistence, we hired a moving company to help them move out of the mansion. Outside, movers came and went, packing up the belongings that belonged to my adoptive parents and Jason. Truthfully, they didn't own much. All the expensive furniture, decorative pieces, and appliances had been purchased by me, so none of them actually belonged to my adoptive parents or Jason. When Jason f

Jason jumped in surprise, then pointed at the screen and launched into a furious tirade. "Daniel, you have some nerve showing your face here! Hand over the company seal right now, or I'll sue you for embezzlement." He then turned to Mom. "And Mom! Why are you with that outsider? Get back here right now! This is where you belong."Watching her biological son rant and rave on the screen, Mom looked at him with profound heartbreak. She pulled out a thick stack of documents and held them up to the camera. Her voice was hoarse, but every word came through clearly. "Everyone watching, my name is Linda Wilson. I'm Jason's biological mother and Daniel's adoptive mother. Today, I'd like to clear up a few things in front of all of you." The livestream chat immediately flooded with comments."Is the old lady being forced to do this?" "The imposter must be holding her hostage!" Mom ignored the comments and, with trembling hands, held up the first document. "This is Miller Group's b

The ambulance finally arrived, and Mom and I accompanied Dad to the hospital, but Jason didn't come with us. He was too busy popping champagne at the mansion, basking in the adoration of his fans during his livestream, and indulging in his fantasy of being the heir to a wealthy family. At the hospital, Dad finally regained consciousness after receiving emergency treatment. The doctor explained that the episode had been triggered by extreme emotional distress, which had caused his blood pressure to spike, and that he needed plenty of rest and time to recover. Mom sat beside his hospital bed, holding his hand in silence, while I stood by the window, watching the traffic stream past below. Just then, my phone buzzed. It was Josh. "Mr. Miller, we've got a serious problem." Josh kept his voice low, though I could hear a commotion in the background. "Your brother, Jason… He's brought a bunch of people to the company. He's claiming he's the new CEO of Miller Group and its rightful hei

Just then, a commotion erupted outside the front door. The next second, Jason stormed into the house with a large group of people trailing behind him. Among them were livestreamers carrying phone mounts, so-called independent media reporters lugging professional cameras, and several rowdy-looking fans who seemed all too eager to get involved. Holding up his phone to livestream the entire scene, Jason shouted at the top of his lungs, "Listen up, everyone! Today, I'm going to expose this parasite live and take back everything that rightfully belongs to me!" The people he'd brought along didn't even bother putting on shoe covers. They trampled all over the expensive Royal Dynasty Carpet before shoving their cameras and microphones right into my adoptive parents' faces as they sat on the couch, wiping away their tears."Mr. and Mrs. Miller, don't be afraid! Millions of people online are here to stand up for you! Did that imposter threaten you? Just give us a nod, and we'll expose hi

As I watched the number of comments and shares continue to climb, my expression darkened by the second. At the same time, my phone began vibrating nonstop as spam calls and a barrage of harassing text messages flooded in.The head of the company's PR department knocked before hurrying into my office, sweat pouring down his face. "Mr. Miller, the company's stock hit its daily trading limit as soon as the market opened. We've also received calls from numerous business partners demanding to know what's going on. Some have even threatened to terminate their contracts." I rubbed my temples, completely baffled by all the inexplicable hostility. Ever since Jason had moved into our home, I'd never done anything to wrong him. So why was he so determined to treat me like his sworn enemy? But I knew that, at this point, my adoptive parents would be the ones to suffer the most. I immediately put everything else on hold and rushed home. As expected, a heavy, gloomy atmosphere hung over

The room fell deathly silent. Less than three minutes later, the security footage arrived on my phone. I opened the video, turned the volume all the way up, and held the screen out for my adoptive parents to see. The footage clearly showed Jason pulling out his IV needle, walking over to my bed, and viciously threatening me. It also captured him pretending to fall and trying to frame me the moment he heard the door open. His words echoed through the quiet hospital room, each one painfully clear."I'll make sure you get kicked out of this family! I'll ruin your reputation and leave you with absolutely nothing!"After watching the entire video, my adoptive parents' faces turned ashen. They glanced at me, then at Jason, who was huddled in the corner, trembling. "Jason…" Mom sighed helplessly, trying to explain. "Daniel isn't trying to take anything away from you." Dad quickly stepped in to smooth things over as well. "That's right. I know you've spent all these years away from
