Chapter 3

Author: Buff Aurora
On the day Jason was discharged from the hospital, he suddenly turned to my adoptive parents and asked, "Why aren't we having a welcome-home party?"

My adoptive parents exchanged confused glances, clearly having no idea what he was talking about.

Jason frowned as though the answer should have been obvious. "Our family has a huge name in the industry. Now that you've found your biological son, shouldn't you throw a party to announce my identity to the entire city? Why haven't you done that for me? Is it because Daniel won't allow it? Is he afraid I'll steal his spotlight?"

I'd been resting in the passenger seat with my eyes closed, but I opened them as soon as I heard that.

Both my adoptive parents had lost their jobs when they were younger and had supported my education by running a street stall. It wasn't until I'd made a name for myself in business and taken the Miller Group public that I brought them to live with me so they could enjoy their retirement.

Our family had started poor, so we'd never paid much attention to the customs and formalities of high society. Jason's request caught us completely off guard.

Still, after giving it some thought, I figured he was only 20, still a young man. Maybe he just wanted a small ceremony to make up for lost time and give himself a sense of belonging.

"Alright," I said. "Let's go to the Hilton. I'll book a private dining room, and we can have a nice family dinner together."

Jason let out a smug snort. "That's more like it."

Little did I know, this was only the beginning of another ridiculous spectacle.

When it came time to order, he deliberately chose the most expensive items on the menu.

"Coral Coast lobster, king crab, and a bottle of '82 Lafite." Jason pointed at the menu with all the swagger of a nouveau riche show-off.

The waiter glanced at me politely for confirmation, and I nodded. "Go ahead."

Jason turned to me with a smug smile. "You don't mind, do you, Daniel? I spent 20 years suffering in an orphanage. There's nothing wrong with treating myself to some good food, is there?"

"Not at all," I replied calmly. "As long as you can finish it."

Throughout the meal, Jason continued filling my adoptive parents' heads with his twisted theories.

"Mom, Dad, you have no idea how shady those imposters can be. They act all sweet and innocent to your faces, but behind your backs, they're busy moving money around and putting assets in their own names. You'd better keep a close eye on your bank accounts, property deeds, and financial records."

My hand paused as I cut into my steak.

Bank accounts? Property deeds?

My adoptive parents did own an old, rundown apartment, and they probably had a few tens of thousands of dollars in retirement savings. But the mansion, luxury cars, and company shares we had now were all under my name.

My adoptive parents awkwardly lowered their heads and focused on their food, too embarrassed to respond. Their silence, however, only encouraged Jason to keep going.

"By the way, Daniel, what's your position at the company? How much do you make? When I join the company, you'll have to help me settle in and show me the ropes. After all, it's only a matter of time before the company is handed over to me."

I set down my knife and fork and wiped my mouth.

"I do odd jobs around the company. As for handing it over to you, we'll talk about that after you graduate from college."

"What kind of attitude is that?" Jason slammed his fork onto the table. "I'm the only biological child in this family. I'll join the company whenever I want!"

To ease the tension, Dad suggested we take a walk by the nearby swimming pool.

I had just turned to speak to my adoptive parents when Jason suddenly let out a startled cry.

"Help!"

Before I could react, a pair of strong hands grabbed my arm and yanked me backward.

Jason had slipped and was losing his balance, falling toward the pool, but he clung to me with all his strength, clearly intending to drag me into the water with him!

A massive splash erupted as we plunged into the pool, whose water was bitterly cold in the late-autumn weather.

I knew how to swim, but I was wearing a heavy trench coat, and once it was soaked through, it weighed me down like lead.

Worse still, Jason wrapped himself around me like an octopus, screaming as he desperately tried to force me underwater.

"Help! Somebody help me! Daniel's trying to kill me!"

He thrashed wildly in the water, digging his fingernails into my neck as he struggled against me. I swallowed several mouthfuls of water, and my lungs burned with pain.

Fortunately, the hotel lifeguards reacted quickly, jumping into the pool and hauling us both out.

Soaked from head to toe and looking utterly miserable, I sat on the edge of the pool, gasping for air.

Jason looked even worse, his hair a tangled mess as he sat there dripping like a drowned rat.

Yet he somehow still had plenty of energy. The moment he climbed out of the pool, he rushed over to my adoptive parents, who had hurried to the scene, pointed at me, and screamed, "Mom! Dad! He pushed me! He was trying to drown me!

"If I hadn't reacted quickly enough to grab him, he would've pushed me into the pool and drowned me!

"How could he be so heartless? Just because I said I wanted to join the company, he tried to kill me to keep me out of it!"

Jason spent the night at the police station. Since the incident wasn't considered particularly serious and Mom pleaded on his behalf, he wasn't held for long. The police gave him a stern warning and a lengthy lecture before finally letting him go. But by the time he walked out of the station, his world had changed completely. He was no longer the long-suffering biological heir who'd supposedly been robbed of his rightful place. Instead, he'd become the internet's favorite laughingstock: a delusional wannabe rich kid and a new breed of beggar.Mom and I brought Dad home from the hospital, and at Mom's insistence, we hired a moving company to help them move out of the mansion. Outside, movers came and went, packing up the belongings that belonged to my adoptive parents and Jason. Truthfully, they didn't own much. All the expensive furniture, decorative pieces, and appliances had been purchased by me, so none of them actually belonged to my adoptive parents or Jason. When Jason f

Jason jumped in surprise, then pointed at the screen and launched into a furious tirade. "Daniel, you have some nerve showing your face here! Hand over the company seal right now, or I'll sue you for embezzlement." He then turned to Mom. "And Mom! Why are you with that outsider? Get back here right now! This is where you belong."Watching her biological son rant and rave on the screen, Mom looked at him with profound heartbreak. She pulled out a thick stack of documents and held them up to the camera. Her voice was hoarse, but every word came through clearly. "Everyone watching, my name is Linda Wilson. I'm Jason's biological mother and Daniel's adoptive mother. Today, I'd like to clear up a few things in front of all of you." The livestream chat immediately flooded with comments."Is the old lady being forced to do this?" "The imposter must be holding her hostage!" Mom ignored the comments and, with trembling hands, held up the first document. "This is Miller Group's b

The ambulance finally arrived, and Mom and I accompanied Dad to the hospital, but Jason didn't come with us. He was too busy popping champagne at the mansion, basking in the adoration of his fans during his livestream, and indulging in his fantasy of being the heir to a wealthy family. At the hospital, Dad finally regained consciousness after receiving emergency treatment. The doctor explained that the episode had been triggered by extreme emotional distress, which had caused his blood pressure to spike, and that he needed plenty of rest and time to recover. Mom sat beside his hospital bed, holding his hand in silence, while I stood by the window, watching the traffic stream past below. Just then, my phone buzzed. It was Josh. "Mr. Miller, we've got a serious problem." Josh kept his voice low, though I could hear a commotion in the background. "Your brother, Jason… He's brought a bunch of people to the company. He's claiming he's the new CEO of Miller Group and its rightful hei

Just then, a commotion erupted outside the front door. The next second, Jason stormed into the house with a large group of people trailing behind him. Among them were livestreamers carrying phone mounts, so-called independent media reporters lugging professional cameras, and several rowdy-looking fans who seemed all too eager to get involved. Holding up his phone to livestream the entire scene, Jason shouted at the top of his lungs, "Listen up, everyone! Today, I'm going to expose this parasite live and take back everything that rightfully belongs to me!" The people he'd brought along didn't even bother putting on shoe covers. They trampled all over the expensive Royal Dynasty Carpet before shoving their cameras and microphones right into my adoptive parents' faces as they sat on the couch, wiping away their tears."Mr. and Mrs. Miller, don't be afraid! Millions of people online are here to stand up for you! Did that imposter threaten you? Just give us a nod, and we'll expose hi

As I watched the number of comments and shares continue to climb, my expression darkened by the second. At the same time, my phone began vibrating nonstop as spam calls and a barrage of harassing text messages flooded in.The head of the company's PR department knocked before hurrying into my office, sweat pouring down his face. "Mr. Miller, the company's stock hit its daily trading limit as soon as the market opened. We've also received calls from numerous business partners demanding to know what's going on. Some have even threatened to terminate their contracts." I rubbed my temples, completely baffled by all the inexplicable hostility. Ever since Jason had moved into our home, I'd never done anything to wrong him. So why was he so determined to treat me like his sworn enemy? But I knew that, at this point, my adoptive parents would be the ones to suffer the most. I immediately put everything else on hold and rushed home. As expected, a heavy, gloomy atmosphere hung over

The room fell deathly silent. Less than three minutes later, the security footage arrived on my phone. I opened the video, turned the volume all the way up, and held the screen out for my adoptive parents to see. The footage clearly showed Jason pulling out his IV needle, walking over to my bed, and viciously threatening me. It also captured him pretending to fall and trying to frame me the moment he heard the door open. His words echoed through the quiet hospital room, each one painfully clear."I'll make sure you get kicked out of this family! I'll ruin your reputation and leave you with absolutely nothing!"After watching the entire video, my adoptive parents' faces turned ashen. They glanced at me, then at Jason, who was huddled in the corner, trembling. "Jason…" Mom sighed helplessly, trying to explain. "Daniel isn't trying to take anything away from you." Dad quickly stepped in to smooth things over as well. "That's right. I know you've spent all these years away from
