Chapter 1

"Ms. Dale has suffered a traumatic brain injury. While it isn't life-threatening, her mental state may become unstable. She will likely fluctuate between moments of clarity and mania."

The doctor handed me the diagnostic report and sighed heavily. It was in that moment that it hit me that I'd been reborn.

"Take her home so she can slowly recover. A familiar environment aids in rehabilitation," the doctor suggested, but I ignored him and looked at Mildred Dale lying on the hospital bed.

Her eyelids twitched slightly to show that she was faking sleep.

In my past life, I trusted the doctor. After taking her home, I worked myself to exhaustion during the day to earn money, only to return home at night just to endure her physical abuse and manic outbursts.

Meanwhile, her childhood sweetheart, Hank Weaver, made up an excuse that he was "well acquainted with psychiatric specialists" and took her out for "treatments" during the day. In reality, they drove my car and spent my money, squandering my wealth while indulging in their sordid affair.

If she was expecting that I'd still take her home in this life, she must be dreaming.

I walked over to the bed, leaned down, and quietly slid my hand toward her inner thigh before twisting hard.

"Ah!"

A piercing scream shattered the silence of the ward. Mildred bolted upright before she pointed at me and shrieked, "Victor Crane! Are you insane?"

I wasn't insane, but in this life, I was going to make sure that she truly became a lunatic.

I shouted toward the door, "Help! Doctors, nurses, my wife's having an episode! She's getting out of control!"

When the doctors and nurses rushed in, they saw the feral Mildred trying to scramble off the bed to attack me, while I huddled against the wall with a perfect mask of terror and helplessness on my face. My eyes immediately reddened as they entered.

"Quick! Get the restraints!" a doctor barked.

Mildred probably forgot that she was supposed to be "mentally unstable" and violently struggled as she screamed at the nurses, "Get off me! I'm not crazy; he is!"

I wiped my eyes and grabbed her restrained hand. "Don't worry, honey. Even if you've lost your mind, I'll never divorce you."

My voice was choked up and loud enough for everyone in the ward to hear.

Mildred's face turned from a furious red to a sickly pale. When she glared at me, the venom and hatred in her eyes threatened to spill over.

The surrounding patients and their families looked at me with sympathy and admiration.

"He is such an amazing man for not leaving his wife's side, even if she's terribly sick."

"Exactly. I can't imagine how much the poor guy has to suffer to deal with such a mess."

I met their gazes before turning to the doctor with a tone full of heavy grief. "Doctor, for her safety and mine, please contact the best psychiatric hospital at once. I want her transferred."

"What?"

Mildred's eyes flew so wide they nearly bulged out of their sockets. As she frantically thrashed, the restraints dug so hard into her skin that it reddened. "Victor, don't you dare!

"You evil bastard! I'm not sick or crazy!"

I ignored her roaring and gave the attending doctor a look of pity and resignation. "Look, doctor. She's already spouting nonsense and thinks I'm trying to harm her. I'm her husband, but she can't even recognize me anymore.

"Please speed up the process. I must get her into the best psychiatric hospital to get her cured."

The doctor helplessly stepped back and sympathetically reassured me, "Don't worry, Mr. Crane. The psychiatric team is on its way."

The moment the words left his mouth, I saw pure horror on Mildred's face. Every frantic defense she made seemed to serve as evidence of how serious her condition was.

"Victor, you bitch! How dare you set me up! I'll kill you!"

Furious, she tried to lunge at me again, but the doctor's sedative kicked in.

As she slowly went still, her eyes were full of murderous rage, yet she was too powerless to do anything.

I smirked. "Don't worry, honey. I'll make sure they get you cured, once and for all."

In the end, the court delivered its verdict. The defendant, Mildred Dale, was found guilty of premeditated murder and fraud. With multiple charges combined, she was sentenced to death, effective immediately. As the judge's gavel struck, I saw her collapse into her chair in a lifeless heap. She'd faked being a lunatic for ten years in my previous life, only to face her end in her most lucid state now.…When I stepped out of the courthouse, the sun was shining brightly. I looked up at the clear blue sky and took a long, deep breath. The air no longer smelled of blood or decay. Instead, there was the scent of freedom and a fresh start.Reporters swarmed me and thrust microphones into my face. "Mr. Crane, how do you feel right now?"Is there anything you'd like to say about the outcome?"I looked into the cameras and gave a genuine smile I hadn't felt in years. "I'd like to tell everyone that though justice may be delayed, it's never absent. Also…"I paused, and for a moment,

Mildred slammed her head and fists ruthlessly against the cold glass. Her last shred of sanity snapped, and her voice turned hoarse from the hysterical screaming."You monster! You cold-blooded snake! You think I don't know it was all your doing?"Just you wait. When I get out, I swear I'll kill you with my own hands and drown you in that freezing lake just like I planned. I'll chop you into pieces and feed you to the dogs!"If you think you've won, no chance. I'm taking you down with me if I have to suffer, and I'll kill you and your whole damn family!"Outside the ward, Samuel and the two caregivers turned pale. They burst into the room and scrambled to restrain the completely manic Mildred.I watched as the two hulking guards pinned her to the floor. Even then, she thrashed and writhed, snarling at me.I reached into my briefcase and, one by one, pulled out the "gifts" I'd prepared for her. First, I pulled out the photos and intimate shots of her and Hank traveling together

I set down my delicate porcelain teacup as the corners of my lips curved into a cold smile. It was time."Of course, Dr. Miller. Thanks for taking care of her. I'll come by this afternoon."When I arrived at Serenity Psychiatric Recovery Center's visitation room, I saw Mildred through the glass. She was wearing a faded blue-and-white striped hospital gown that hung loosely off her emaciated frame. Her hair was shaved off in messy patches, exposing uneven scars scattered across her scalp. There was no trace of her former arrogance or pride on her face. Instead, she looked haggard. Her pleading eyes were full of fear. The moment I appeared, she looked like she'd just seen her savior. She bolted up from her chair, lunged at the glass, and snatched up the black intercom phone."Victor!"Her voice trembled violently when she spoke, thick with tears. "I'm sorry, Victor! I know that I've messed up!"She broke down sobbing uncontrollably, and her gaunt face was streaked with tears. "

Samuel was moved by my "devotion". He sighed and nodded. "Very well, Mr. Crane. We respect your choice, and we'll put Ms. Dale on the most intensive treatment plan available."That was how Mildred's "good days" officially began. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays became her scheduled days of torment. Strong caregivers would pin her to the treatment bed and strap down her limbs. Cold electrodes would be pressed against her temples. The moment Samuel flipped the switch, a surge of electricity would shoot through her brain. She would twitch and convulse violently, like a fish flopping on dry land.Even with her jaws forced open and a bite block between her teeth, it couldn't stop the white foam spilling from the corner of her lips. Her eyes would roll back until only the terrifying whites remained. The whole process lasted only seconds, but to her, it felt like an eternity. When the current stopped, she would be left slumped on the bed, entirely drenched in sweat. After waking up,

Mildred's body went rigid as the smile on her face slowly stiffened.Slowly, inch by inch, she turned around to see me standing on the shore in a black jacket, holding a flashlight. I wore an innocent, concerned smile as I looked at her in silence. Our eyes met."Honey, you killed the wrong guy." I let out a soft laugh. My tone was casual, as if we were talking about the weather. Her eyes widened."Ah!" A bloodcurdling shriek that barely sounded human shattered the silent night skies above Timberline Lake. Mildred felt as if a sledgehammer had slammed into her brain. Her ears were ringing as she looked down in disbelief and stared at the face in the water under the pale moonlight. After staring for a good ten seconds, she finally caught a clear glimpse of the corpse in the trench coat, bobbing in the water. Hank's lifeless, wide-eyed face was staring back at her. Then, she looked back at me as I calmly said, "It seems like the two of you are still into roleplaying to keep

Somehow, Hank managed to get his hands on a caregiver's uniform. He bribed a new janitor, so they could work together to smuggle Mildred out.I decided to play along. That evening, I called Samuel and told him that I'd had a nightmare about Mildred and couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. So, I requested his help to keep a close eye on her ward and do more rounds. He brushed it off as nerves but promised to stay alert.Around midnight, Hank slipped into Mildred's ward, disguised as a caregiver, pushing a cart piled high with dirty sheets. She was already changed and immediately hid at the bottom of the cart.Everything went smoothly. They managed to bluff their way past the first security checkpoint and made it all the way to the back exit of the psychiatric hospital, where the bribed janitor was waiting outside. However, just as Mildred crawled out of the cart…"What do you think you're doing?"The shout was followed by the blinding glare of countless flashligh
