Chapter 6

Author: Cold Snow Moon
In the rearview mirror, Mason's family was completely swallowed by the blizzard.

It was warm in the vehicle. I wrapped the wool blanket tighter around myself and finally felt a flicker of warmth return to my stiff limbs.

Conrad gripped the steering wheel firmly.

"Will they die?" I asked in a raspy voice.

He kept his eyes on the road and replied in a flat voice, "In this weather, they won't last the night in the car without a heat source."

I stared silently out the window at the vast, white

Now, the Vances were physically ruined, and they were also bound to face prison and crushing debt.Mason, the golden boy of the family and the man they had pinned all their hopes on, would now spend the rest of his life as a cripple.…A year later, the bells of a seaside church chimed softly.Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows and onto my white wedding gown. With Dad's arm linked through mine, I walked step by step toward the man waiting at the end of the red carpet.Conrad stood tall and steady in a perfectly tailored suit. His eyes held only my reflection. When Dad placed my hand in Conrad's, he solemnly said, "I'm placing my world in your hands."Conrad squeezed my fingers tightly in return, and his gaze was firm. "Don't worry, Allan."He turned to me and whispered a vow in a low voice only the two of us could hear, "Raine, for the rest of our lives, I'll be here to protect you."A lump formed in my throat, and my eyes welled up with tears. As he slid th

I stood beside Conrad and looked down at Mason, the pathetic wreck lying at my feet. There wasn't a single ripple in my heart."Raine, it's me, Mason! Your fiance!"Mason's voice was hoarse as he screamed desperately, "Take me to a real hospital! This place can't save my legs! I have money and insurance, and you just have to pay the medical bills first!"Pamela spotted me as well. Her eyes were filled with both hatred and greed."Raine, you heartless bitch! You've been hiding here in comfort while we suffered! Give us money! Can't you see that Toby's dying? You're going to be his aunt, so you're obligated to save him!"The bystanders around us began to whisper in low, judgmental voices."Is that woman related to them?" "She looks well-fed and warm. How can she just stand by and watch her family suffer?""Those poor people look half-dead…"Conrad stepped forward to stand in front of me. "Quiet." His sharp command silenced the entire room.He let out a cold laugh. "Fiance?

"Mild frostbite. Luckily, she wasn't exposed to the cold for too long. She'll be fine with a few days of rest."After treating the frostbite on my hands and feet, the doctor gave me a few tubes of ointment and stepped out."Eat something." Conrad walked in carrying a steaming bowl of oatmeal and sat by the edge of the bed. He blew on a spoonful to cool it and naturally held it to my lips. I felt a flush creep up my cheeks in embarrassment. "I can do it myself.""Your hands are swollen like carrots. Stop acting tough."He didn't budge and firmly pressed the spoon to my lips. The oatmeal had been cooked until it was perfectly soft. As the warmth slid down my throat into my stomach, tears suddenly started rolling down my face. The despair of dying in my past life violently contrasted with the warmth of the current moment."Why are you crying?"Conrad seemed a little flustered. He set the bowl down and clumsily wiped my tears. "Does it still hurt?"I shook my head and choked,

It no longer stirred even a flicker of pity in my heart."My convoy is behind us," he suddenly said. "They're likely to try and flag down one of the rescue vehicles.""Don't let them on," I immediately said.He shot me a sidelong glance. "You want them dead?""I just don't want your team to be the next people they throw out of the vehicle."Before the words had fully left my lips, the radio crackled with static. "Captain! There's a dead electric car behind us. A family of three

The door of the off-road vehicle flung open before a tall man leaped out. In just a few strides, he rushed to my side and caught me just as I was about to collapse."Raine?"I struggled to lift my eyelids, which were heavy and matted with frost. In my fading vision, the man's face slowly came into focus. It was Conrad Cross, my former neighbor and my senior back in high school. I'd heard rumors that he'd gone on to lead a specialized civilian search and rescue team, spending his years rushing into dangerous hellscapes.I never imagined we'd cross paths here."Conrad… Cross…"My weak, hoarse voice sounded like sandpaper scraping my throat. "Don't talk! Stay awake!"He scooped me up into his arms and carried me into the passenger seat of his vehicle. The heater inside was blasting at full power, so very soon, I was enveloped in warmth. He grabbed a thick wool blanket from the storage compartment and wrapped me up tightly from head to toe. Then, he unscrewed a heavy-duty therm

Mason's eyes lit up as if he'd just found a lifeline. "That's right, Raine! You're athletic, so go ahead and see if there are any snowplows. There's bound to be a rest shelter, so walk there and bring back help.""I'm not going," I said without hesitation. "It's at least 12 miles to the nearest rest shelter. Besides, it's minus four degrees Fahrenheit out there, so going out means death.""How could you be so selfish?" Pamela burst into angry curses. "Is your comfort more important than the lives of everyone in this car?""Exactly," Mason added. "We're a family, so someone has to make a little sacrifice."He began unbuckling his seatbelt to make his move. "Listen, Raine. This is for the greater good. If you won't go, don't blame me for not showing mercy."He reached for the door lock."I'm not getting out of this car!" I gripped the armrest for dear life. "That's not up to you!"Pamela lunged forward from the back seat and grabbed my collar. Her hands, calloused from years of
