Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
"Why?" I demanded, turning around to stare at Lauren. "Lauren, why would you do that?"

She looked down her nose at me, her face completely devoid of guilt. "Because he's my brother."

The words cut straight through me. I let out a hollow laugh, tears welling in my eyes. "And what am I, Lauren? I'm your brother, too."

This time, she didn't even bother to give me the silent treatment.

She simply spun on her heel, leaving me staring at her cold, rigid back.

Just as she reached the door, she paused. Without turning around, she threw a final warning over her shoulder.

"I'll keep Henry on a tight leash in this life. Just stay in your lane and stop making trouble."

Her promise meant so little that I already knew better than to believe it.

When the SAT scores were finally released, I received my official acceptance letter from Dreston University exactly as expected.

Henry, however, had a string of zeros across his tran because he had missed the exams entirely.

That night, the same scene from my previous life played out all over again in the living room.

Henry clung to Mom's arm, weeping hysterically, "Mom, I don't want to repeat my senior year! It's going to suck so bad! It's all Ethan's fault. If he hadn't riled me up, I wouldn't have done something so reckless…"

Mom held him close, rubbing his back as she threw a resentful glare my way. "Ethan, did you hear that? You're the reason Henry is in this mess!"

Dad slammed an enrollment form for a local summer school program onto the coffee table in front of me, issuing a stern command, "You're going to repeat senior year with Henry to keep him on track. We don't trust him to do this alone."

I calmly picked up the form without giving any of them another look.

In my previous life, I'd cried, argued, and even locked myself in my room and refused to eat in protest. None of it helped. All I got in return was harsher punishment.

This time, I was too tired to fight.

My willingness to go along with them actually seemed to catch everyone off guard. They clearly hadn't expected me to give in so easily.

Lauren remained on the couch through the entire exchange, watching from the sidelines.

Eventually, she lifted her gaze from her phone and studied me with faint curiosity, as if she were trying to figure out why I wasn't reacting the way I had before.

I met her gaze and saw nothing but indifference.

So, this was what she'd meant when she promised to keep Henry on a tight leash.

How ridiculous.

After that, I stopped having a place at the dinner table.

Every evening, the four of them sat together in the dining room, enjoying the dinner the maid had prepared, while I ate cold leftovers alone in the kitchen.

Before long, I felt just as numb as the food tasted.

I became invisible in my own home.

They talked about where they wanted to go for the weekend right in front of me, bought Henry the newest designer bags and watches, and made plans for Lauren's future.

None of those conversations ever included me.

Sometimes, Lauren passed the kitchen and saw me eating by myself in the corner, yet she never once stopped.

Then, one night, I overheard Henry talking to a classmate in his room, unable to hide the smugness in his voice.

"Ethan's such an idiot. All I had to do was cry a little, and our parents made him repeat senior year with me.

"Tomorrow's going to be fun. I've already got a few guys ready to teach him a lesson at school.

"Lauren? Please. She doesn't give a crap about what happens to that loser."

The call disconnected. Standing outside his door, I slowly balled my hands into tight fists.

Was the nightmare of my past life going to repeat itself so soon?

No. In this life, I wasn't going to let anyone slaughter me like a lamb.

Mom connected every dot in the package I'd sent her.Dad stood frozen as the papers scattered around his feet, the color draining from his face.Henry, who had been huddled in the corner trying to play the victim, finally pieced together what was being said.He stared at Mom in utter disbelief before turning his eyes to Dad, screaming at the top of his lungs, "That's not true, Dad! Mom has lost her mind! It's Ethan! Ethan must have forged all this trash just to ruin my life!""Shut up!"This time, Mom and Dad shouted at him in unison.Something in Mom finally snapped. She rushed over and, for the first time in Henry's life, slapped him hard across the face. The crack silenced the entire room."I'm not your mother!"Her eyes were bloodshot as she pointed at him, every word coming out as a furious scream. "You took my son's place! You're nothing but my husband's bastard, and you're just like that disgusting woman who gave birth to you!"Then, she lost it, sweeping ornaments off

The vase hit the floor with a deafening crash and shattered into pieces."This is all Ethan's fault! Everything that's happened to this family is because of him!"Henry was completely hysterical, dragging his fingernails down the wall with an ear-splitting screech. "Why don't you love me anymore, Mom? Why are you believing all the trash he's feeding you? I hate him! I want him dead!"Faced with his meltdown, Mom was strangely calm. She didn't scream, and she didn't lose her temper. She simply stared at Henry's face, twisted by jealousy and rage, until every trace of warmth disappeared from her eyes.It was no longer as though she were looking at her beloved son but at a piece of evidence. At that moment, Mom's phone, which she'd left on the living room coffee table, suddenly began to ring.Martha instinctively glanced at the caller ID.A second later, she frantically sent me a message. Mom had been lied to. For 18 years, Dad had made a complete fool of her.Once that possibility took hold, Mom couldn't get it out of her mind. The next day, she told Henry they were going shopping. Instead, she drove him to the most reputable DNA testing center downtown.Mom really did have him tested.Martha secretly messaged me afterward and included a blurry photo of Mom's car parked outside the testing center.According to her, Mom hadn't said a word during the drive home. Henry cried beside her the entire way, but she never tried to comfort him. Eventually, all she uttered was, "Be quiet."I read the message and replied, "Thank you."The wait for the results must have been agonizing for Mom.Over the next few days, my phone was unusually quiet, and even the online uproar seemed to lose momentum, as though someone had hit pause on the entire scandal. Henry had probably been frightened enough by Mom's sudden change in attitude that he no longer dared to stir up more troubl

Just as Dad's carefully staged interview managed to calm the storm slightly, an anonymous post started making the rounds on the campus forums and social media platforms. The title read, "The Truth About Dreston's New Academic Golden Boy, E.H. Talk About Biting the Hand That Feeds You."Whoever wrote it claimed to know our family intimately and laid out an elaborate story about an ungrateful impostor stealing someone else's life.According to the post, I had repaid my family's kindness by resenting my sickly younger brother, deliberately setting him up again and again, then running away from home and playing the victim in the media. By painting myself as the one who had suffered, I supposedly won public sympathy while dragging my family's name through the mud.Every line was carefully engineered to paint me as a twisted, ungrateful villain.I stared at the photo attached to the post. Lauren had ignored every one of those moments when they happened. Now, each memory came back with such clarity that unease began creeping into her chest. She looked at Henry, who was still putting on his tearful performance, and for the first time, she asked a question she'd never once thought to doubt."Henry, on the day of the SAT exams… are you sure you didn't tear up your own admission ticket?"Henry's crying stopped abruptly.…Meanwhile, my new life was interrupted by a sudden phone call from an unknown number. I answered, and Dad's cold, familiar voice echoed from the other end, "Ethan, this is your father." His tone held no warmth, only the same unquestionable authority he'd always used with me. "You have ten minutes to get down to the campus gates."I hung up and blocked the number.Ten minutes?Dad seemed to have forgotten that the Ethan who obeyed his every command had already died on an operating table in my previous life.I didn't have time for them.
