[Eileen’s POV]

I didn’t have anything to say to that. Not right away.

So I just sat there beside her, watching the birds settle back onto the wall like nothing had shifted between us at all, even though something clearly had.

“I mean it too,” I said finally. “In case that wasn’t clear.”

Lumi looked down at her mending, but I caught the corner of her mouth curve, small and real.

“It was clear enough.”

I wanted to say something else, something that would make the moment feel as large as it a

[Eileen's POV]Alaric found me before the music even finished changing, one hand held out like he'd been waiting all night for an excuse."I don't dance," I said."You danced at your own wedding.""Badly. Under duress.""Then you're already improving, since nobody's forcing you tonight." He didn't lower his hand. "Come on. Kade and Lumi already made fools of themselves. Someone has to make them feel better about it.""That's generous of us.""I try to be generous exactly once a year. Tonight's the night."I let him pull me onto the floor, laughing despite myself, and his hand settled at my waist like it belonged there."You're better at this than you let on," I said."Strict childhood tutor. She threatened to make me dance with a broom if I didn't take it seriously.""Did it work?""Clearly. I'm devastating on a dance floor now." He spun me once, smooth, and pulled me back in before I'd fully caught my balance. "See.""That was luck.""That was years of humiliating broom-based trainin

[Kade's POV]My hands hadn’t shaken this badly since my last battle, and that was saying something."You're sweating," Alaric said beside me, standing where a best man was supposed to stand, doing a poor job hiding his amusement. "In front of the entire court. Impressive.""I fought an actual war and didn't sweat this much.""A war doesn't ask you to promise anything permanent.""Neither does dying, apparently. Turns out that's the easy part."He clapped my shoulder once, firm, and didn't say anything else, because he didn't need to. We'd said everything that mattered between us already, in gardens, war rooms and quiet moments neither of us talked about afterward. The doors opened, and Lumi walked in.I'd seen her a hundred times by now, covered in garden dirt, laughing at my terrible dancing, crying into my shoulder the night this whole thing started. I'd never seen her like this, and something in my chest just stopped working properly for a few seconds."Breathe," Alaric muttered."

[Eileen's POV]I finally opened it that night, once the village visit was behind us and my hands had stopped shaking enough to manage the seal.No signature. Just careful, handwriting, telling me exactly how much this stranger already knew about my life, and how little that peace was supposed to last."Well?" Alaric watched me from across the room, arms crossed, waiting."She knows I'm pregnant." I set it down on the table between us like it might still bite. "Whoever wrote this. She knows, and she wanted me to know she knows.""She?""The handwriting. I can't explain it better than that. It felt like a woman wrote it." I pushed it toward him. "Read it yourself."He did, jaw tightening with every line, and when he finished he folded it once, sharp, like closing it might undo what it already said."This isn't Lucian's handwriting from the note in the depot.""No. Different hand entirely.“Then whoever wrote this isn’t following Lucian’s plan.” He set it down finally. Is that supposed t

[Alice's POV]Roth found me in my chambers just after sunrise, still in the riding leathers he hadn't bothered changing out of."It's done," he said. "She found it herself. Her own husband handed it to her, right there in the village.""Good." I poured him a drink he didn't ask for and one for myself I actually wanted. "Nobody suspects you placed it separate from the raid itself?""Nobody's looking that closely yet. Everyone's still counting bodies and grain sacks." He took the glass, and didn't drink from it. "You understand what happens if Lucian finds out I helped you with this instead of sticking to his actual orders.""He won't find out. Not from you, not from anyone who values staying employed by me instead of him.""That's not entirely how loyalty works, Alice.""It is when I'm the one deciding who gets protected once this war's finished and territory needs governing." I sat across from him, unbothered by the implied threat in his silence. "Lucian wants Eileen alive. Useful. A

[Alaric's POV]We went back at first light, once the fires were out and there was nothing left to do but face what remained."You don't have to come inside the village itself," I told Eileen as we rode in. "You can stay near the horses. Nobody would think less of you for it.""I'm not staying near the horses.""I didn't think you would. I still had to offer.""Why offer something you already knew I'd refuse?""Because it's my job to offer it anyway. Doesn't mean I expected you to take it." I glanced over at her, steady in the saddle despite the night we'd both had. "How are you feeling? Really, not the answer you give the guard captain.""Tired. Angry. Something else I haven't found the right word for yet." She kept her eyes on the smoke still rising ahead of us. "I keep thinking about what she said last night. That her husband was just in the way. Like he didn't matter enough to even be a target.""That's exactly why we're going back."The village looked worse in daylight than it had

[Eileen's POV]"I'm coming with you.""Eileen, no." Alaric was already pulling his boots on, moving fast, not looking at me. "You're pregnant. That village is still burning.""I'm pregnant, not made of glass." I grabbed my own cloak off the hook before he could argue further. "I've spent months learning to fight exactly for a night like this one. You don't get to decide I sit it out now that it's actually happening.""This isn't training.""I know that." I met his eyes, steady, giving him nothing to push back against. "Which is exactly why I'm not staying here to imagine it instead."Kade appeared in the doorway behind the runner, already half-dressed, sword already in hand. "Riders are saddled. I'm coming too.""Fine. Both of you." Alaric didn't waste breath arguing twice in one night. "Eileen, you listen to every order I give out there. Not half of them. All of them."He held my gaze a long moment, jaw tight, then exhaled hard through his nose. "Stay behind me the entire time. I mea
