Poisoned

Kara's POV.

I coughed up blood, my heart aching badly as I placed my hand on my chest, wondering exactly where all of these pains were coming from.

"Are you okay?" Brittany raised her head from Jeremy's chest, before turning to him. "Is she okay?"

"Of course, she is probably pretending to get my attention." He scoffed as my legs wobbled and I collapsed to the ground, finding it difficult to breathe.

But I wasn't pretending.

My vision suddenly grew blurry and I could barely see my surroundings. My head began to hurt badly as I fell on the floor.

I glanced around as the guests present all began to whisper in hushed tones.

"Who is she?"

"I don't know but she looks really familiar?"

"Could she be related to the bride or the groom?"

The murmurs continued, their words crawling on my skin like bugs.

"You really should stop being pathetic, Kara." Jeremy half-yelled, probably still thinking that I was faking it when I wasn't.

My entire body hurt like hell, especially when I tried to get up.

"Oh my God! Kara, are you alright?" Through my barely opened eyes, I saw Xavier holding me, and before I slipped into unconsciousness, I witnessed Victoria grinning down at me with satisfaction.

One question ran through my head.

Why?

......

......

The hospital beeping sound woke me up. I flicked my eyelids open only to be blinded by the sunlight peeking into my room through the window.

"You are awake, thank God." I heard a voice and turned to my right to see Xavier sitting on the chair opposite me.

His clothes looked rumpled.

Was he the one who brought me here? Where was my husband?

Was he truly getting married to Brittany, or did I dream about everything that happened?

Xavier got up to walk towards me, his eyes flashing with sympathy.

"Damn! You look so pale, why didn't you let us know that you were sick, Kara?" He asked and I froze.

Sick? How?

Apart from the chest pains, I had no other symptoms.

Just then, the door opened and the doctor walked right in as he checked something on his clipboard.

"Mrs Devonte right?" He began, and I struggled to nod as I suddenly felt my throat was too dry to say anything.

"The report here says you have been poisoned and have just a few days to live. Also..." He paused, taking in a deep breath.

"The poison affected your unborn child, and now it's gone. I am sorry."

My blood turned cold as I went still on the bed, trying to sink the doctor's words into me.

Did he just say I have been poisoned and would soon die?

As in I wouldn't be alive for much longer?

Also, it affected my unborn child? I was pregnant?

But I never experienced any pregnancy symptoms.

I placed my hand on my stomach and felt it so empty that my eyes stung with tears.

How could I have been pregnant and not have known?

As if reading my mind, the doctor answered.

"The poison's effects are the reason why you never even suspected that you were pregnant."

"Doctor but how? Poisoned and she is still alive?" Xavier asked in disbelief.

"It's a slow poison sir. It was meant to torture and kill her slowly. Whosoever poisoned her, feeding it to her for days, must really hate her and I am sure if she can recall clearly, she must have been feeling pains in her stomach." The doctor said and I nodded again.

He was right. I had always felt pains, but never coughed up blood until today.

"Where is Jeremy?" I asked Xavier who looked away, not answering me.

I chuckled bitterly, knowing Jeremy probably didn't give a damn or still thought I was pretending.

Did he even know that I lost our child? That I was pregnant?

All of these were too much for me to take, and I didn't even know how to react; I just felt really numb.

Xavier left the hospital room afterwards, to get me food and while I was glancing out the window, the door opened.

I turned to see Victoria walking in with her head raised high, and immediately, memories of the engagement party she took me to flooded my head.

Did she take me there intentionally? Why did Xavier call her a bad friend?

Now I was certain there was something I might have been missing.

"Well, well, well, you look horrible, Kara." She laughed and my heart tightened in my chest.

Was my condition now a matter of fun? Did I make a mistake trusting her?

"How come you are Brittany's cousin?" I asked and her eyes flashed with a dangerous glint.

"It's always been obvious but you were too dumb to see it. " Victoria began as she wrapped her hands around her chest.

"You see, I have always been in your shadows since secondary school, despite not knowing one another. My hate for you began when we somehow got enrolled in the same workplace."

"I mean, I have been there even before you joined, and somehow, immediately, you were promoted to be our boss's secretary. Not only that, you stole the attention of the man I loved so much and seduced him to the extent that he tried to force himself on you, and of course, you played the victim, when you were at fault for seducing him." Victoria yelled, her expression tightening.

It was then that I realized this girl was crazy.

Yes, Victoria and I met at work, but I never thought that she would hate me. I thought she really liked me, so we became friends, and if I can remember clearly, the only guy who tried to rape me ever was Damian Cooker.

Another fellow worker who was obsessed with me and Victoria knew this, and yet she was claiming I seduced him?

Have I been surrounding myself with monsters all this time?

"My cousin was dating our boss, who is now your husband, and the same way you seduced Damian to his downfall is the same way you seduced my cousin's fiancée into your bed, which was why he had to marry you, and my cousin had to be heartbroken. But luckily, Jeremy never loved you, he only married you to get his revenge, something relating to your family, which is weird, considering you are an orphan." Victoria told me, her words slicing through me like a blade.

So Jeremy didn't marry me to punish me for taking him away from Brittany?

But what family was Victoria referring to?

"I exposed you to Jeremy and he gladly offered to be spiking your meal every morning with poison to end both our revenge, while you rot away like the monster you are." Victoria looked at me with so much hatred that I trembled.

Different emotions burst through me as she revealed the whole truth to me, but then, none of what was listed was my fault.

I never seduced Damian, nor did I beg or force Jeremy to end up in bed with me.

Rather, it all began two nights ago, when Jeremy wanted my help to propose to Brittany, his childhood best friend and fiancée.

I helped organize everything until the main disaster happened.

  • Rebirth; it’s too late, Dear ex   She’s back

“Brittany is in New York,” I said.Xavier took the phone from my hand and looked at the photograph for three seconds. Then he handed it back and pulled into the next lane without a word, his jaw set in that particular way that meant he was thinking fast and didn’t want to say anything until he had finished.“She wasn’t supposed to be back yet,” I said. “The outline I had in my head put her return weeks from now. After the divorce. After the inheritance filing gained ground.”“Irish accelerated the timeline.” His voice was flat. “The press story this morning wasn’t just about discrediting you. It was about signaling Brittany to move.”I scrolled through the rest of what Marcus had sent. Three more photographs, different angles of the same hospital entrance, taken over a span of about twenty minutes. Brittany wasn’t going inside. She was standing outside. Looking. Mapping the layout, the entrance points, the foot traffic pattern. My stomach tightened.“She’s not there to visit anyone,”

  • Rebirth; it’s too late, Dear ex   That night

“Jeremy lied to you,” Xavier said. “About all of it.”He wasn’t looking away. That was the first thing I noticed. Most people, when they are about to say something that costs them something, find a spot on the wall or the table or their own hands to look at. Xavier looked directly at me, and the steadiness of it told me this was not a confession he was making reluctantly. It was one he had been carrying for two years waiting for the right moment to put down.“Tell me exactly what happened,” I said.He exhaled slowly. “You were drunk that night. Not a little drunk. You had been drinking since early evening because watching Jeremy propose to Brittany had broken something in you and you were trying to get ahead of the pain before it caught you.” He paused. “I found you at the bar alone. You were already past the point of making good decisions and I was going to take you home. Just take you home. That was the only thing I intended to do.”“But you kissed me,” I said.“You kissed me.” His

  • Rebirth; it’s too late, Dear ex   What Xavier knows

WHAT XAVIER KNOWS“Tell me,” I said.He didn’t reach for a soft way to say it. That was one thing about Xavier that I had always noticed without letting myself think about too much. He didn’t dress things up. He didn’t build you a comfortable chair before he handed you something painful. He just handed it to you and trusted you to hold it.“Irish Devonte knows about the pregnancy because she arranged for someone inside the hospital to pull your records the same day you were admitted.” He held my gaze. “She has known since yesterday morning. Before the dinner. Before she came to the house.”I sat with that. She had sat across from me at that dinner table last night with the full knowledge of my pregnancy already in her hands. She had held my hands when she left and looked me in the eyes and delivered her quiet warning and she had known the entire time.“What does Jeremy want to tell me?” I asked.“After you left Ashford’s office this morning, Irish called Jeremy again. She told him som

  • Rebirth; it’s too late, Dear ex   Xavier

XAVIER“Get in the car, Kara.”He said it the way someone says something they have already decided, not a request, not a suggestion, just a fact waiting for me to catch up to it. His voice was low and even and his eyes were already moving past me to the building entrance like he was checking whether anyone had followed me out.I didn’t move. “How do you know where I am?”“Marcus called me.” He pushed off the car and took two steps toward me. Close enough that I could see the tension he was carrying in his jaw, the kind that meant he had been standing out here working very hard at looking calm. “The press story broke eight minutes ago. It is already being picked up by three major outlets and Irish Devonte’s publicist is feeding quotes to anyone who will print them.” He looked at my face. “You have maybe ninety minutes before a photographer finds this address.”I looked at him. This man I had known for two years in my first life and two years again in this one, who had always been in th

  • Rebirth; it’s too late, Dear ex   Five minutes

FIVE MINUTES“What exactly is she going to tell them?”I asked it quietly. No shake in my voice. No spike of fear that anyone in that room could see. Just the question, clean and direct, because the only way to measure a threat was to understand its actual shape.Jeremy looked at the phone in his hand like it had just become something heavier than it was. “She says she has medical documentation. Proof of the pregnancy. She will frame it as you trapping me. Trying to use a baby to stop the divorce.”“That’s her move,” I said. “A pregnant woman using her unborn child as leverage against a man trying to leave her.” I let the words sit in the air for a second. “That’s what she is selling to the press.”He didn’t deny it.I almost felt sorry for him. Almost. Because somewhere behind his eyes I could see that he knew exactly how it sounded. He knew the shape of what his mother was willing to do and he had spent years choosing not to look at it directly and now it was sitting in the room wit

  • Rebirth; it’s too late, Dear ex   The room

THE ROOMJeremy looked up at me the way you look at something that was not supposed to happen. Not angry. Not triumphant. Just stunned, like a man whose carefully arranged plan had just produced the exact wrong result and his brain was still catching up to it.I stood in the doorway and looked back at him and felt absolutely nothing on my face.“Close the door,” I said to Ashford. He did. His hands were shaking slightly. I noticed that and filed it away. The office felt smaller with three people in it. Jeremy was sitting in the client chair with one arm resting on the desk edge, the posture of a man who had arrived here believing he was in control of the room. That posture was already changing. I could see it in the way his shoulders adjusted when I didn’t react the way he expected. He had expected panic. He had expected me to freeze in the doorway, to look between him and Ashford and fall apart trying to understand how this had happened, to give him the few seconds of confusion he ne
